"I attend Mass frequently. The liturgy of St John Chrysostom is one of the most exalted works of art. Anyone following the liturgy of the Greek Orthodox service attentively trying to comprehend the meaning of each ceremony will be stirred to the very depth of his being. I am also very fond of evening prayers. There is nothing like entering an ancient church on a Saturday, standing in the semi-darkness with the scent of incense wafting through the air, lost in deep contemplation to find an answer to those perennial questions: wherefore, when, whither and why?" These are the words of Tchaikovsky writing to his patron Nadezhda von Meck (who he never met), and he continued, ‘As you can see, I am still bound to the Church by strong ties, but on the other hand I have long ceased to believe in the dogma … this constant inner struggle would be enough to drive me out of my mind were it not for music, that great comforter, the most exquisite gift Heaven has bestowed on a mankind living in darkness.’

for years i’ve always loved Tchaikovsky. now i’m a newly blessed Orthodox catechumen and my love and appreciation for his works are even greater in my heart
Pozdravliyayu!
Orthodoxy is not the way, because it's not ortho-dox. You should read and meditate and pray with the saint Athanasius' symbol.
Don't get fooled by what they will say to you : it 's not from orient because it has been written in latin, and even the latin used in Gaules, so it can't be Athanasius. It's not true because he was exiled during two years in Gaules... So, read and pray for God will guide you to a catholic guide.
pope Francis is not a catholic guide.... obviously.
🌠 "Classical music is the language of the soul, expressing emotions that words cannot convey, unveiling a profound spiritual world." 🎻💖
Impossible not to believe in God after listening to Hymn of the Cherubim 🙏
One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever
Hymn of Cherubim is so amazing. I consider it one of the best composition of all time. Makes me shiver each time
Yes, its beyond the word masterpiece...
Right! Beautiful 🌈
My favorite, same, of all songs.... Notes relation, molecular state of our ancient blood in syntonia with holy geometric patterns.
Maybe because it has been inspired by the Most Holy Spirit? 😁
☦️❤️
@@kanlamat1372 What does "molecular state of our ancient blood in syntonia with holy geometric patterns" means?
Խաղաղություն Ռուսաց աշխարհին. Խաղաղություն Ուկրաինայում. Հիսուս Փրկիչ ողորմեա
When I hear this beautiful liturgy I am not only transported to "the numberless angels singing eternal praise" but also to the faces of orphans, the disconsolate, the marginalized the very people Christ ministered to and yet at the same time I can catch a glimpse of the vastness of the universes that Our Father has created. That a piece of music can encapsulate all of the above is a miracle unto itself.
I am russian. This is part of text:
Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, abiding everywhere and filling everything,
Treasury of good and life Giver, come and dwell in us,
And clean us from all filth, and save our souls.
Glory to God in the heaven, may God's favor be with us and peace in the whole world.
Lord, you will open my mouth - and my mouth will declare praise to you!
Lord have mercy on us.
I used to think all of the old Russian traditions ie: the orthodox religion, the icons, the ancient wisdom of the eastern Christian community was lost in Byzantine history but it lives on in my heart & spirit. The ancient wisdom is immortal. I found a path home.
Thank you for translating the prayers here. Amazing to read the rebuilding of everything in few words to the world. They speak truth.
This is wonderful! Thanks 😊
Love this, so peaceful. Love orthodox. Am a Catholic
@@soniagomes5069 And I'm atheist and dont like jewish mythology in roman adaptation (christianity) and dont like pacifism and tolerance. But translate it for fun. Because this music is beautiful.
Can't get enough of this. Being someone who grew up listening to heavy metal and hard-core punk, the Hymn of the Cherubim has changed my perspective on what I consider "good music." When we die, I think we're going to hear something like it all the way to heavens gates.
It depends
@@eem8039 of course, we have to make it to heaven first.

It is my first time listening to this gift from God. Thank you Tchaikovsky for being the vessel for Grace to enter.
May all beings be joyful and free, Amen. 🕊️🤍
What an astonishing performance of a musical masterpiece. I pray these people will one day again raise their voices safe and free.

I come from a formerly small town called Saint-Jean-Chrysostome and this hits on a special level for some reason.
Спасибо за комментарий, а мне повезло явиться на этот свет земляком П.И.Чайковского. г. Воткинск
Truly a magnificent and inspired piece. It is a blessing to the Orthodox Church.
I’m a Latin Rite Catholic, however I do appreciate my brothers from the east.
This piece is fabulous.
God is god, everywhere you go. It's the same god🙂
same, I like going to the Vetus Ordo but even that pales in comparison with our Eastern brothers!
I'm also Latin Rite Catholic and I pray for our brothers of Mount Athos who fight against general modernist apostasy.
I love this piece. Also, I'm an atheist and didn't feel the need at all to state that, until I read this comment.
@@lutek1 You're in for an awful shock so. Don't say you weren't warned.

we are in a spiritual war and our foe fears peace most of all...I hope this brings you peace...
Tchaikovsky has always been one of my favorite composers! So sensitive and wonderful 💖🙏
Have to agree with all the comments regarding the Cherubic Hymn (Hymn the Cherubim). Absolutely ethereal. As a Ukrainian Rite Catholic, I've heard many beautiful versions of the hymn, (Bortnyansky's Cherubic Hymn no. 7 comes to mind), but this is so ethereal it brings chills to the spine. All the more reason to live a holy life and desire final union with God in Heaven--you won't get this in the other place. This is the music I would imagine we will hear moving through the tunnel of light to the Throne of Our Lord. Be ready!
Agios O Theos Imon..Amin!
It s Holy Holy Holy !
Yes, but come back down..this was made on earth. No need to think about any tunnel, it will be abstract anyway. And probably absolute silence will come until it bangs you back to something and somewhere else.
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, Have Mercy on me, a sinner. Amen.
Pray for me; I am a catechumen of the Orthodox Church, seeking baptism into the body of Christ.
VI The Hymm of the Cherubim is the most beautiful thing I have ever heard. So, moving emotionally that Heaven must sound this beautiful!
I do not understand a word of it but oh what is this beautiful, heaven, send from God directly to my heart by an angel. Greetings from the Netherlands
This is the most glorious piece of music I have ever heard.
My heart goes out to this land that shares such beauty....prayers and thoughts of love are with you all right now .
Who knew that music could be so beautiful... this cracks my empty heart open and fills it with divine light!
Give a try to Thomas Bergersen - Deliverance.
Thanks you all, I shall remember that, and will
always do when I pray to him. I do hsve most of his homilies.
Beautiful words.
Who knew? I knew. Millions know. Great music by the masters is always beautiful.
I was baptized in the Ukrainian catholic church & attended Catholic ukraninian school. The Mass(liturgy) was always sung for Christmas & Easter. Acapella singing with 4 voices is natural & beautiful. As sn adult. I encountered Tsaichovskys liturgy. I hope heaven is full of this music because the voices give Glory to God who gave us our voices!!!
This solemnity and comfortable feeling is unrivaled, and promotes peace of the soul
Wow! I had no idea he wrote sacred stuff as well. Thanks for the revelation!
One day the great city of Constantinople will return to its former glory.☦
I love his '9 sacred pieces'.
🌷
Rachmaninoff wrote sacred pieces too! They're well worth a listen

The profound spirituality that permeated and still permeates all Russian Arts, and many human beings, makes my heart full of gratitude and joy and my eyes full of tears...
Absolutely beautiful, meditative, art knows no bounds.
Beautiful, what glorious praise.
Tuned to it on the Orthodox Good Friday. How beautifully uplifting. Gospodye pomiluy nas.
This is the most beautiful, wonderful sad song I have ever heard! I have heard angels singing in church, and this comes very close to the beauty of their song.
With dreadful things happening in Ukraine, it's a pity those" angels " can't
influence Putin to stop his awful agenda...😢🇺🇦😢🇺🇦
Ukraine was a perfectly functioning country, and now ?
Ruined, with millions suffering...😢🇺🇦.
"Angels" can't do anything, neither can " god"...😢.
Myths ...superstitions, wishful thinking.😢.
Love to all suffering folk in Ukraine and
many other places : what does " god" do ?
Nothing, despite being " omnipotent"....?
Love from sad England.😢

I bought this album a while back and it's gloriously peaceful. If you like this, Rachmaninov's All-Night Vigil was also written for the Eastern Orthodox Church and has much the same overall sound and vibe. I highly recommend the recording on the Harmonia Mundi label with the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir.
Thank you for the info. I also love Rachmaninov.
Thank you brother

And what has Jesus done to you that now should be merciful?
The belief that the holy spirit judge and punisher is in grave need of correction.

Absolutely beautiful.
This kind of music draws out the best of me! It makes me more humble, loving, peaceful and strong! I've often wondered why...
The reason it does this is because the Spirit of God flows through this music. Keep listening and let it continue to touch your heart.
Thank you JL. I love how you express it - music as extension of the logos . Once again in another form He is incarnated, to dwell among us. I believe I get it now

As a Methodist, the liturgy, arts and music of both Catholic and Orthodox church have a profound influence on my theology thinking. The Holy Spirit is present at every church I went, regardless of denominations.
@@kansashoneybadger7899 quite a coincidence, I was raised and still am a Methodist, but I am also disgusted by the amount of traditions and doctrines that they summarise or threw away. Methodists don't even cross themselves and they are turning too liberal and left for me. I am looking towards catholicism and Orthodoxy but I won't be so sure that the Holy Spirit is not present with them. St Peter and St Paul had contrasting views and their churches sometimes received different messages but the Holy Spirit will guard the Holy mother church collectively until the end of days, and Hades shall not prevail against it.
@@matthewlau6711 I don't mean to come across as rude but thinking of the catholic (western) church and Orthodox (eastern) churches as peter's and paul's respectively is very misinformed. Firstly, Peter did not just found western churches he also founded the church of Antioch. Secondly, there were a thousand years after the death of the apostles that the church existed without schism. While it is true that the basis of the main claim made by the catholic church, that is of papal supremacy, is founded solely on the apostle peter this does not mean that the Orthodox does not also follow peters teachings. Peter is a Saint in both churches and so is Paul! Also, both Orthodox Christians and Roman Catholics hold that the way that their respective churches interpret the writings left by the apostles is non-contradictory. To believe that Peter and Paul had contrasting views presents a serious problem with the infallibility of scripture and in turn the canon of scripture. Please become Orthodox Christian!
My dear Matthew, it may pleasantly surprise you to know that John Wesley, the founder of Methodism was heavily influenced by Eastern Orthodoxy. Indeed he is known to have spent time with an Orthodox Bishop who had fled to England after persecution by the Turks.
If you'd like to know more simply Google "John Wesley and Eastern Orthodoxy"
May God bless you and guide you to his one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church 🙏☦️
Lord have mercy!

I have no idea of the words sung in this incredible piece of work but somewhere deep in my very foundation my heart and soul understand perfection in every note and every harmony from the crisp tenors an alters to the beautiful rich baritone and bass, I have a strange sense of peace and tranquility in my heart (odd as I never knew it was there) and my soul is rebuilding and will soon be whole a full of peace once more.
Thank you for sharing this sublime experience
I love how it is just silent for the last 4 or 5 minutes. Don't get me wrong, I love the music, but the ending with complete silence is so powerful!
I'm a pure hearted atheist, but Tchaikovsky and his work are divine. Never ever I heard more beautiful music than his!
Eric Welling Once you ponder the meaning of music, and reflect upon all you know, asking what is human cognition to conjure such imagery and evoke such passions within the human sprite, and the finite understandings and incongruities in mathematical formuli such as quantum mechanics and atomic theory, recognize our inadequacies in not even being able to journey amongst the stars, to see as reincarnation is documented, transference of the human spirit, and the profundity and impact of His teachings on western society, you come to acknowledge His presence.
You can add me to the group of atheists! I am a die hard atheist and I love Choral music. Do also listen to Vespers by Rachmaninoff and if you still have time to spare listen to Bortnyansky-Concertos for Choir.
Enjoy!
I dig the "Pure hearted atheist" expression. That's exactly the way I feel most of the time, although listening to this makes me lean towards pantheism.

Rachmaninoffs “all night vigil” was influenced by this piece. Tchaikovsky was his idol, and in many cases he sought to pay homage to his legacy. The beginning note in this liturgy is the same beginning note in all night vigil.
