My mother told me that when I was a baby, and sometimes colicky or grumpy, my father would put this record (Scheherazade) on the stereo and walked slowly around the living room with me on his shoulder, patting my back gently. I would soon fall asleep. My first lullaby. God Bless my parents....and God Bless Rimsky-Korsakov.

The ship is being tossed about in the rough seas long a tree leaf .
As I listen to this melody ,
    I can't help but be anxious ,
The melody of the solo violin is full of a sense of presence , as if luscious and sagacious Scheherazade appears in front of me .

Sir Thomas Beecham, a British conductor, must be counted among the most eminent conductors of the twentieth century. He made one of the first stereo recordings for the EMI label in the mythical Abbey Road Studios and Kingsway Hall in London. This recording did not take a single wrinkle. He may be getting younger... I think that two French musicologists should get the credit along with N.A Rimsky-Korsakov, for the achievement he made in Sheharazade, for having helped, indirectly though, to provide Rimsky-K with some genuine musical material through their studies of the Berber and Arab musics of French Algeria. The first one of the two is Alexandre Christianovitch, via his book «La Musique Arabe», and the last is Fransisco Salvador-Daniel, author of the Book «Recueil des mélodies arabes, mauresques et kabyles». Alexander Borodine possessed copies of the books thanks to the money of his Papa!
