    In my opinion based on practice and lots of lessons, fast playing requires to keep hands not high up, but "glued" to the keys. They are not flat, but still very near to keys. The less unnecessary movements, the better. No twisting of anything. Finger tips needed to be a bit rounded when touching, thumbs touch not fully streched out, just a tiny bit rounded. The main idea is economy of movement. And yes, the arms move the hands with their fingers to their positions when the distance is increasing. Fast playing needs total relaxation of body and mind and practice, lots of practice, starting slow, even 1/4 or less of the desired tempo. Speed comes with relaxation snd calmness inside. Do not push for speed. It is like any sport (here "finger sports" with music involved), it takes time to adapat brain, muscles and physiology to outstanding performances. Try with a good teacher... Trying alone often enough results in mistakes that are "burned in" and very hard to erase. In the end, not speed, but the quality of sound, the musical language, human emotions are what shall be created. A robot will play infinitely faster, but will never have consciouness to share and never create more than an acoustical effect -- which basically is without life. Do not be a robot. Play music slow, medium or fast with expression depending on the character of the music. Understand the music deeply.

      Pretty good advice. Economy of movement, taking it with calm and having a teacher (if you can afford it) is really good advice.
      But the rest depends on the player. That's why is good having a teacher. If you have big hands, or you're playing a passage with fast separated notes having your hand too near to the keys might be counterproductive.
      Also, some movement and rotation of wrists and arms while playing fast passages is really good. Economy of movement is good, but sometimes that extra little rotation helps a lot.

    My dad taught me that the the key to how fast you can play is based on how fast you can lift up up your fingers so he had me practice doing the 5 finger scale but by first placing all five fingers on the notes in the down position and then lifting each finger in the same was you are demonstrating. And yes the other thing to learning fast was to play it slow. It's very surprising how hard it can be to play a piece slowly. Playing slow has the same rule as playing fast. Start with normal tempo, then halve it, then halve it again. Good video!

    • @sk8rdad
      @sk8rdad 6 років тому

      Thank you. He would be proud that you said that. He had other bits of wisdom he passed down, like, "The black keys are the most important". Being the newb I was I had to ask "why?" - "Because without the black keys, you can't find the white keys" DUH! (forehead smack). Thanks for taking the time to post these videos. I'm very fast (508 notes per minute) which is what drew me to watch :)

    I wanted to be a musician since I learned to play keyboard in my childhood. First I was not interested, but when I was able to play songs myself, I became passionate. I had to play in my friends/ organization's keyboard for any programs. Since no one was interested in supporting me, I had to take the job I hate and with the money I earned from that job, I have applied to the piano grade exams and managed to pass some. This channel like other, have helped me in some way. Now I am going to buy a keyboard for my own. The struggle is real 🤯

    Disappointing. Important technique points for high speed are missing. Eg:
    - Don't twist your hand (as shown here). You don't have the time in high speed.
    - Don't make a big "thumb under", "finger above" move. You don't have the time.
    - Train to only shift/reposition the hand.
    - Add rotation of the hand.
    - Immediately after playing the thumb begin moving it to the new position.

    • @anthonyb2745
      @anthonyb2745 6 років тому +116

      DriedSquid8447 he’s right, you know. Thumb under is a MASSIVE technical error. Try playing some very fast arpeggios like in Chopin’s Ballade no 1 with that technique. You’ll be lucky to hit the right key with your thumb half the time. He’s claiming a thumb technique but then when he plays it fast he’s using wrist rotation and elbow position to transition to the 1, not tucking it. It’s just bad advice and a flawed technique that teachers spend considerable time training their students OUT of. It’s inaccurate and actually slower.
      Here’s the best shortcut if someone wants to play the piano quickly: THERE isn’t one! Practice all scales and arpeggios for an hour every day, making sure they are smooth and connected before turning the metronome up. And do it with proper technique; i.e. correct wrist and elbow position avoiding thumb under.
      And he’s wrong on the five finger scale, too. The weight of your wrist should be rotating inside to outside, almost as if your fingers aren’t moving, but the weight of your arm is forcing your fingers in to the keys.

Also i taught those four instruments playing styles to students by their requests! It's like 'heard me thru' the grape vine' kids I had taught about 2000. So I know your explanations are great. Keep doing it. After I'll be really good at the keyboards piano things I can do the whole recording of songs all by myself alone!!!

    Good tips, thanks. What do you think about this change?: Starting with just the first octave, play up to and including the first finger cross: in C major, play C1, D2, E3, F1 (thumb), then stop. Drill this 10x, increasing speed gradually. Then do the same with the rest of the scale, G2, A3, B4, C1 (thumb), and drill that 10x. Then play both parts with a pause between them. Then play the octave, then two octaves. Some scales won't have two crosses, and some crosses won't be the thumb.

    Good info. I would also mention to get the thumb into position early, before thumb actually hits note.

    Here is the simple best 3 steps to fast finger piano exercise:-
    *Shave your head
    *Wear a weird sunglass
    *Think in mind you are Beethoven, or Mozarts sister when you are sitting infront of a piano to play

    Start the thumb under on that F Maj scale so that it is already under the third finger when the third finger plays the A, keep the thumb moving under so that by the time the 4th plays the B flat the thumb is touching the C and you will eliminate any break in the sound. Keep your wrist aligned with your arm and lead with your elbow.

    Everyday practice is very very important. Allot time for practice like sleeping eating studying otherwise no use. Good practice makes miracle in future. Obey master's instructions.
