Dude you're very inspirational, definitley the best skate tip vid i watched and ive seen plenty not only did you explain kickflips but how people can progress. Nice vid John!!
Keep killing it, John. These videos will always have a good shelf life because people (I mean skaters ( skaters are people too.)) will always want to learn to tricks like the kickflip. You offered another perspective to the trick even when there are 100+ videos on kickflips.
When you said take it to the.biggest obstacle, I thought in my head I'm gonna kickflip the four stair in my park finally, and then you did that banger, it made me wanna cry lmao😂😂😂
I used to have perfect kickflips but after a while I just got lazy with them so now I'm having to reteach myself how to do them properly because I can no longer kickflip down anything
im having the "flick down" problem and i dont know why but I can't fix it. I can do my Heelflips with a real outwards flick and can land them pretty much every try but i can't take this to my kickflips....so annoying
I see that this comment is 3 years old and I hope you got them fixed but on the off chance you didn’t get them down yet try flicking towards the center of the nose rather than off the side of the nose
Hey John, love your tutorials. You should really keep doing it because you bring up points that I feel is very very important for beginners that other tutorials don’t bring up.
Finally a trick tip video from someone who can actually do a proper kickflip. I had the following problem: I used to have really good kickflips but then after an injury I kinda lost them. I mean, I was still able to land them everytime but the didn't look like they used to and they didn't feel right (hard to explain). This video helped me to focus on the motions I used to do naturally before my injury. It was the balance between the pop and the flick somehow.
I landed my first kickflip recently. I learned that it helps you learn to commit to the trick and not be afraid if you practice by purposely landing with the board upside down, that way you get some practice flicking, and also landing over the board, and then just flick a little more and you'll actually land it naturally.
i know you wont see this, but I've been skating for two years and I've gotten better than i ever thought i would, but i still cant kickflip. This is by far the best video on how to do a kickflip that i have seen, and it has really got me motivated to go out there and try some more. Thanks John!
Hey John (my name's John too!), you may or may not hear this much but I can tell you put a lot of work into this video. This is why your name is coming up a lot lately and I hope you know that. Also, great production value! I love that you know where you are in the frame. You're awesome dude, keep on keepin on.
I dunno why, but John seems more chill in these earlier videos. Not as hyped and bursting at the seams with energy. It's refreshing to see him more relaxed and not spilling a million words into the camera at mach10.
Damn Man... I knew all of that! BUUUT you just helped me a lot by simply reminding me about all that! So I feel like the 2 main points to me are... poping and kicking harder... aaand kicking out/up not down! I'll go out and give some effort into that right after work. Can't... wait for it... wait for it! :D
Good tip video. All 5 tips were good. But....that first tip solved all my issues. What a good video. My Kickflips are still sketchy but I feel that I overcame a big obstacle.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!! SO MUCH I FINALLY Learnt how to KICKFLIP!!! Tank you so much man, i've subscribed since the beginning!!! Thank you!!! So much!!!
Great video john i could get kickflips more constantly, my problem was just flicking to slow, i put alot of effort into it and i can get my kickflips more often thanks again john
Oh my god. Old John. I got so used to new John I didn't even remember you. How's it going old buddy! Jokes aside tho, the only thing different now is that you seem happier and less awkward in front of a camera. I love that you still enjoy doing the same silly skits you did from the beginning. Peace ma homie
Hey John, What was the park at 2:04? I'm originally from long beach and just moved to costa mesa, but I've never seen that park before and it looks fun.
John, It's been a struggle for me, long story short > I learned kickflips before > broke my ankle the week of while doing kickflips > 2years later I can't do them and I can literally do every other trick except kickflips. The problem that I am encountering is that my front foot simply won't come back to the board and my pop, flick, catch, position and everything is good but my Front foot simply won't come back lol I would appreciate if you could give me some tips on this Thanks! and Great videos, I just realized this video was posted 8 months ago haha.
Great tips man! Do you think in the future you may do a How To for 360 Flips? I know there are a lot of them, but I feel like just going over issues that you had while learning them and how you fixed them would really help me. I would very much appreciate it. Sometimes I can form the tre, but a lot of the time I either do like an Impossible scoop and my feet get in the way or I just keep doing Varial Flips.
Hey John! I loved the video. I also subscribed! I was wondering if sometime in the future, you could do a 50-50 down hubba tutorial? That would be awesome!
+John Hill Do you think you could make more trick tip vids when you have the time (like treflips ;) ) . This one helped me out so much on getting better at kickflips. Thank you
My mistake was skiping the process. I was learning to ollie standing still, and couldn't even do them moving. Then what I did? Decide to learn kickflips! Worse thing I could have ever done.. hahah When people out there says, "don't skip the basics", listen to it! You can learn lots of simple tricks before trying to kickflip, it will definitely help! :)
I land my kicklfips 100% consistently, but I kick down and off the side. I don't kick the nose or kick forward at all, and I don't put much attention into where my foot placement is (actually I land them no matter where my feet are). A strange thing is that I actually use kicking down and off the side as a trick to make me land them consistently, because it makes them flip straight. If I kick forward toward the nose, it rotates a varial flip perfectly.
First of all, thank you very much. You have very nice kick flips . Just wondering if you saw 2022 December issue of thrasher?”spoken Word” letter from the Chinese guy and how he described a man who can kick flip. I’m telling you it’s priceless. I want to seh I was very sceptical about your video at first, I don’t even know how I got on it, we’ll done. Ever see a lib tech snow skate? I’ve been trying for four years to do a kick flip on it and haven’t….. yet
I think not enough tutorials mention how you'd basically completing a bunch of these tricks well before ever going down again. And I think a lot of tutorials forget to mention enough about timing. My ollies are like three times higher whenever I get the timing just right. Literally the difference between one skateboard width high and three. Haven't quite figured out how to translate that timing to moving ollies though.
With my kickflips I can never get my front foot on I flick it out it dose the rotation then I catch it with my back foot but I can never get my front foot on! What would help???
SOunds like you're flicking down you might have trouble going off stuff or onto stuff if you cant catch so i would recommend learning to catch it, it could help you in the future
I’m so extremely frustrated right now. When I flick wrong, I can land it but it’s rocket and when I flick right, it flips perfectly but it doesn’t rotate all the way. I don’t get it
Please help! Every time I do a kickflip I do the flip and no matter how high I jump the board always hits my feet and when I kick out my foot I always land before my board hits the ground. Can someone please tell me what I’m doing wrong?
I have a problem with over flicking it, for some reason I can land Double kickflips relatively consistently but I have never landed a regular kickflip EVER.... I'm weird
I wasn’t popping hard enough and wasn’t kicking out enough causing my board to over spin or land primo. Put my phone down and tried it caught it with my back foot first try🤘🏼
Hey dude what's you're grip tape and I learned varial and somewhat tres before I can kickflip and I'm trying to work on my kickflip thanks for the tips!
Xavier DLR Awesome! Yeah man if you learn em good it's a whole new world. It's called Getta Grip, it's a grip tape company I ride for out of Long Beach.
Dude I have kick flippy dippies but like everyone tells me the way I do em is weird like I don't ninja kick it I give it a weird flick with my foot and it does the kick flip and I land it nice but it bothers me how it looks when I flick it and I really wanna fix that
The first time I attempted to do a kickflip (I didn't watch any how-tos) I had no idea what I was doing. Then I did it some more and it went flying. XD Now I'm going to try again after watching this video and see if there are any differences. :)
Dude you're very inspirational, definitley the best skate tip vid i watched and ive seen plenty not only did you explain kickflips but how people can progress. Nice vid John!!

I see that this comment is 3 years old and I hope you got them fixed but on the off chance you didn’t get them down yet try flicking towards the center of the nose rather than off the side of the nose
Same prob for me
Man you look so young. Cool to see an older video like this and where you are now! 🙌
Hey John, love your tutorials. You should really keep doing it because you bring up points that I feel is very very important for beginners that other tutorials don’t bring up.
