Porsche Taycan 4S Review: Finally! An exciting electric car

- Electric cars are boring, right? Wrong! The new Porsche Taycan 4S is, according to Rory Reid, the most fun electric car on the market today. Check out why he makes this bold claim in his full review of Porsche's latest electric model, tested on snow and ice in Lapland!

Rory is an amazing car journo.
Please never leave this style of commentary and cinematography! Up there with Chris Harris and Henry Catchpole
Thanks for the feedback, Rodrigo. Be sure to subscribe :)
The three of them should be on Top Gear together. A bit more grown up compared to the classic trio but to certainly with no less quality.
skelletet123 I'd certainly pay good money to see them together!
Henry Catchpole is a wizard! I like Rory's style too...
I did find a reviewer who is not British but has a unique style of reviewing cars...

First class production, if I didn’t already know I would have said this was a clip from Top Gear. Well done Auto Trader.
5:20 amazing how wide the trunk opens!
Is it me or does Rory Reid literally have one of the best jobs in the world? I can tell you absolutely enjoy what you do.
Rory's reviews are legit getting me through this raggedy quarantine. Thanks for the great work man!
Man i wish i could get an invite to experience moments like this....great review Rory
So glad I’m here ! This knocks every other channel into next week. Rory is brilliant. Cinematography is rich and spot on. Who needs top gear or crappy Car Wow. Here to stay. Well done !
Your reviews are EXCELLENT!
I gotta admit it. Great review. Like the review you did with all the Tesla honestly good good job
Nice review, which brand top is that? Looks dope
I watch Auto Trader because of Rory Reid
Sorry Matt from Carwow I still love the Jimny though😊

Great review. Top Gear man!
Whats the background soundtrack from 1m30s?
Certain I could drive a £200 car round there and have a blast.
Loved Taycan but more than that, Loved the weather & woods,
Which place is this ?
no data on how the batteries behave with the cold weather?
As a huge Tesla fanboy, I can say that the Taycan is my FAVORITE car on sale! Congrats Porsche!!
Reject tesla...
Become porsch
wery nice, hope you will do some small cars aswell :))
Rory, well done! Keep it up!
a return for porsche to the poster-car on a wall. greatjob

great video!
Bring on the taycan estate 👌👌👌👌👌
I just want to know the name of the song used in this video.
top review Rory
Top review 👍
Having switched from the 500hp super saloons after around 20 years of performance cars. I can now say the delay in peak torque when launching an ICE, really annoys me now. ICE is like diving a steam train compared to EVs.
Preach. Driving a Q7 e-tron is a dream in EV mode but as soon as you put your foot down hard and are forced to wait on the ICE sucks all the fun out of driving it.
You seem to be in a pano roof vehicle yet I see a hard top from the drone. Which is correct?
Yeah! I thought I saw two porsches on track at one point...
Wicked review, Rory - nice one, bruv!
Rory, what about the range on a full charge 4s battery?
according to Carwow and Fully Charged when they looked at it/talked to Porsche about it the theoretical max range was round about 230 miles, but the real world simulations/driving would likely put it around 180-190 miles. Worse than the Tesla's sort of ranges, but the mode is permanently set to what Tesla would call ludicrous mode and the batteries/brakes apparently don't have a massive fall off from this.
Who better to test drive the new Porsche tycan than Rory. Great 👍 review as always when Rory is at the helm
Mat Watson is better
vithula dissanayaka lol 😂

I see Rory, I press like.
Great great video
I just want an electric car for the reliability
Don't get a tesla then
What are you needing a car like this in Lapland? My son has one of these, and I had it for one week. I was very nervous initially becuase I was afraid of it, being electric but after a half hour it was a real experience. It is very smooth, responsive and very easy to drive . The steering is exceptional almost unreal. I never got used to all the digital controls and displays , there are no knobs at all . The 3 screens in the dashboard completely fill the interior and could be distracting as you drive, but they are amazing and control everything. Teslas must be dying in jealousy.
Awesome ! Would love this.
Is the Autopilot better?
Who cares autopilot, if you have a Porsche!!??
The problem with 4S is that it being similarly equipped to Turbo (e.g. 4WS, Race Tex ceiling, Bose audio, extended battery capacity...) is not that much cheaper. While decently equipped Turbo is about the base price of Turbo S, the 4S model is way above Turbo's base price. Like $10000 above. And it has about 33% worse 0-60 time. And the range even with the base and the most efficient 19'' wheels is like 2 miles better and I'm talking about WLTP range, not EPA in which the difference could be even smaller
Good to see Rory man, and I really like the car but £130,000 is a bit 🤯🤯 autotrader with the midnight upload 👌
All day, all night. This 4S is £83k btw.
AutoTrader the one in the vid is a beautiful machine, and at £83k is a very attractive proposition 🙌🏼🙌🏼
It's a Porsche, you can't expect a luxury car to be cheap lol
7:35 you have the facilities for that
Others electric cars: I don’t think you’ve got the facilities for that big man
I misread Taycan with Cayman. Got shocked for a bit
Grigor Penev Electricity does shock! 🔌
a exciting car that get 201miles EPA range, so nice!
Zhibo Wu What would you say Wu if I would claim that Taycan 4S and Taycan Turbo do not have the same power train?
@@herrfleischgewehr less horsepower also indicates smaller battery and therefore a cheaper car. I would guess around 300km of range. Range is VERY important in an electric car. Sad to see this when they have so much other nice tech in the car. Batteries are expensive and battery tech isn't easy to get right
He was at top gear right?
Can’t wait for my 4S to arrive. Great review Rory👌👏
Excellent
❤️🔋❤️🔋❤️🔋❤️🔋❤️
With more and more charging stations coming on line by the day, this car will provide plenty enough power and excitement for those who are willing to partake in this 1st generation of Porsche Electric Vehicles.
Why would you review a car in Antarctica?
Rory reid is actually a really good car journalist. shame top gear didn't work out but thats because of the show
Come on Rory don’t tell me that you would take any version of the Tycan over a GT3 touring.
i will wait for taycan sport turismo 4s and then still not be able to afford it
iFumoffu it will probably be more expensive than this car😬
Nord Mann so true 🤣 but it will be the perfect taycan
Love the Turismo’s.
That's the poor mans version! I need to get a better job
LOL. For the same price you can get the top performing S or a 3 for less, and get better acceleration and handling in the 3 for much less money. Oh, and longer range so you enjoyment can last longer. You will spend more time charging the Porshe and less time having fun. LOL.
Ari P lmao the taycan is as fast as the top model S, you fan boys will say the 0-60 is faster but realistically it’s the same and it’s faster once they get going as well, it’s leagues faster than a model 3, and the charging will be the same speed however Tesla does at least have a better charging infrastructure
@@ariip There is no Tesla that handles better than the Taycan, the model 3 doesn't stand a chance on a track.
If it has 570 bhp on 4s imagine what it’d go like on 6s
Thank God for the Porsche Cayenne. Otherwise we would never see a Taycan or even a New 911 at all.
It was the Boxster that saved Porsche
@@davidowen2859 May be, until the 2002/3. After that is just Cayenne, not that the Boxster is not having sales. Both European and US Sales from 2002 to 2018 of the Cayenne are around 450K. If you not include 2002 as it's the first year and it sold only in Europe at less than 1000 units it just crushes everything /it's even on par with the 911 in Europe/. For the same period in both markets the Boxster is around 200K, from 1997 to 2018 around 300K. So based on sales from 2002 the Cayenne beats the Boxster like ~120% more. Maybe from 1997 to 2002/3 the Boxster is the one, but after that the SUV saved Porsche. The 911 has pretty much the same sales in Europe since 2003 /2000 units more than the Cayenne/, but in US it has nearly 67K less /The Cayenne has ~45% more sales since 2003 than the 911 in US/. / Source carsalesbase.com /
As I said the Boxster saved Porsche. Then the SUV craze takes off and Porsche capitalise on that as any good business would on a trend. However without the Boxster there may have not been a Porsche to ever get into SUVs. Interestingly Porsche are back to focusing on sports cars as the SUV craze reaches a peak and is predicted to die as we move to more sustainable vehicles.
By the way I'm also pleased Porsche are so successful otherwise I wouldn't now have a 986, 991 and 971.
Rang? Why no mention of range! I thought range was important for ev's?
7:47. You’re welcome -Rory
@@AutoTraderTV I'm sorry, but I'm talking about the real range of 200 miles.
We were unable to independent verify total range during this test. We were busy trying to verify how sideways it could get. Official figures state >400km. We expect this to be less, depending on how you drive it and where you live.
300km is more realistic
What do you mean by 'Finally'?
What do you mean by “what do you mean”?

Yeah, you're right people we're not excited when they drove the Tesla S in 2012 nor were people excited when the P100D(L) was introduced, just as Model 3 Performance owners are not excited by their car.
You're right, there were no exciting EVs before this Porsche.
And no, your channel doesn't sound like a pay to play one.

nice
This video creates a fake impression that this car can drive in snow.
It won't! Not with that ground clearance.
It’s not an off roader, you are correct, so it won’t drive through unploughed snow. We weren’t trying to make that impression. It’ll happily drive on ploughed roads in snow though, as you see particularly in the second half of the video.
Why drive the thing on snow.
press events.. To show ev's can easily perform in cold weather
Lol, only because TESLA is wooping every sports cars ass. 2012 the Model S came out.... 7 years later Porsche kinda comes close (aside from zero self driving)
Bit School ehhhh. I think Porsche’s quality is better An. I think it can charge was faster too. An when you’re traveling far. Higher charging peaks matter A lot
@@ociel1988 ok. So they have faster charging. For now... did you know they have almost zero charging stations for this fancy fast charge...
Have you seen teslas super charger network?
Their new chargers fill to 80% battery in just over 20mins.
Oh, and range. Tesla has more range.
I guarantee you'll never see one of the Porsche models on the road while you'll be seeing more and more teslas.
The Oc
Tesla’s battery event will take place within the next few months, where they’ll most likely introduce huge leaps in their battery technology, both increased charging rates and their million mile battery.
Lots of crying about the range, how many miles do most people really drive in one day?
Nice review but not car for normal people, too expensive!
Such a shame something that looks so good is fully electric
Not a shame at all. Electric opens up all sorts of new possibilities for car design and performance. This is just the start. ICE is showing it's age.
Disappointed you couldn't make a judgement between this and the Teslas
What do you mean?
@@AutoTraderTV If you had to choose between this and any of the Tesla's, would you still be tempted?
@@kuukuyankson2033 Sure. But this is good for some reasons, Teslas are good for others.
Why do people always have to be disrespectful by saying the poor man’s such and such?
Good review Rory. I think the car looks great, apart from the one thing that Porsche often seem to do badly. Those headlights just look cheap. Are they borrowed from Midas?
1:32 "Electric cars are meant to be boring" 🤦♂️ If only he said that a decade ago before the first Tesla Roadster was released, then it would make sense. And he doesn't even realize how dumb that sound.
EPA range of 201 miles.
Yeah, not great. That makes the faster charging (energy-wise) not as impressive, since it takes more energy to go the same distance. In addition to paying more for the electricity to drive a given distance, you'll also put more cycles on the battery for any given distance driven which will cause faster battery degradation. This would be a great car if it were priced closer to Teslas which are about twice as efficient, have more range and a better charging infrastructure. Taycan definitely looks better, but for the price its a worse deal, IMO.
That's for the Turbo, not the 4s.
taycan such a huge disaapointment.. cannot even beat the 2012 Tesla model s range by EPA.
Carwow is bleeding viewers now.
I love rory.
200 miles of range for the price of a tesla that goes 345 miles... my daily commute, as with 99% of the world, does not include a race track
I think you have other problems if your daily commute is 200 miles or more.
..and drives in the snow (facepalm)
It's electric and a Porsche so it's going to be an amazing drive, but that range is just not enough at that price point.
the Tesla killer....finally
Pee all over a Tesla that thing
What??. Does the tesla killed alreays?. Hmmmm. I think there are more tesla than taycan i the world. And besides porches is a big company they still can't kill it. Opps
M. O.G. Tesla killer ? Pftttttt 🤣🤣🤣🤦🏽♂️
Won't be killing no one with that range though.
@@Xemnas103 This is relative, no one ever discussed the autonomy of one car over another as a handicap
Unfortunately due to Brexit, we are no longer entitled to European weather.
Porsche is better than Tesla .
We have already had exciting electric cars for years, they are called Teslas. These are not very exciting for very long if they only get 201 miles of range (or less in the 4s) versus 370 when you drive hard and use up range faster. More of an issue in the cold like in this video. Then the charge takes longer on top of it, because even with a higher charge rate in the Taycan, if you get significantly less miles with the same energy put in your miles gained is actually lower in a given amount of time. This has all been calculated out and explained. Then they are probably pushing the battery too hard on charging and shortening its life. Tesla has proven their longevity in their batteries by careful charging without abuse. Then the performance vs price is much higher on the Tesla.
I think the 4s with the bigger battery will have more like 250 because that 201 is for the Turbo.
I'm not 100% sure but I think it's one of the reasons why Taycan has smaller range that it has more advanced battery heating/cooling system which means it is always ready for hard acceleration and for fast charging.
@@wadesultan5074 WLTP range is like 2 miles over the Turbo. Why would it be greater in first place? The car weighs about the same as Turbo, has about the same aerodynamics, tires are I believe less than inch narrower. It doesn't matter how much lower 4S's peak output is. When you drive normally you ask for just enough power to overcome resistance forces. Your logic works with track driving. While Turbo barely covers let's say 50 miles, the 4S would probably do like 60 or something.
Ari P exciting means it can take corners and no just launch one or twice before power throttling. There is a lot more to a car than its acceleration. Drive a car maybe youll find out for yourself
Yes Tesla have been here for a few years. But this Taycan looks way nicer. Yes Model S is a statement and very nice. Different car thoughAnd besides, we need all the cars to be electric. If Porsche buyer goes for this instead of a diesel/petrol version that's great.

< When you get an American made electric car for 1/4 the price with more range, and one for for the same price with 4x the range and faster
tjpeterson96 but why would you buy american carbage if you have money for a Porsche?
Ian Reid exactly, that is why everyone buys cheaper American goods over luxury European.
@@herrfleischgewehr That american carbage is something Porsche is desperately trying to replicate.
M.A. M.R. I guess that is why Electrical jesus made roadster 2.0 look like mission E.
@@herrfleischgewehr Exactly, you failed.
Tesla are a much better value. Better range. Better performance for the money.
Teslas are built like Renaults
@@Km12345rrrr - the Taycan only get 200 mile range. The new Tesla Roadster will get over 600 miles range. I'd wouldn't count on Porche's very first EV being more reliable than a Tesla either.
yogiyoda I still don't think it's time to enter the performance EV market yet due to lack of competitors. More competition = better tech
But you are right I guess
yogiyoda The 200 mile EPA range is just BS. Do you actually belive that an E-tron 55 has longer range than the Taycan....
RANK looking yolk
201 miles of range... Sad! After all this hoopla, (and moolah) it is very disappointing. Nice car but the price and range make it a very very low volume car.
Christophe Blanchi and that is how they like it. Tesla plebeian market need not apply. You want value, get a Tesla. You want exclusivity and quality, get a Porsche. I can tell you, most of their customers don’t give a shit about range. Electric or petrol.
Christophe Blanchi Another Christophe :)
The front looks like some Japanese cartoon face and the whole car just looks very bland and normal.
Know shit it’s fun your on SNOW! You said you can “throw it in a corner and get the back end out” yes yes your on FUCKING SNOW MATE!

"finally, an exciting electric car?" ... how is this any more exciting than a tesla model S?
Significantly better handling. The model S is a one trick pony in my eyes. Its comfortable to drive around and it certainly doesn't handle like a boat but theres nothing fun or interesting about the way its drives. Acceleration? Sure, but it gets pretty old.
Trash!
Wait till I start getting on the road!
