Great video so many memories!! unfortunately SWT sold there class 170s to Southern railway which mainly operate the Brighton to Eastbourne and back!! Wish they brought back the slam doors.. We miss the slam doors most of all on the Portsmouth Direct line..
@@tobysummers471 got 442 at fratton right now, on driver training. The 170s went to TPE after southern , then to scotrail, now going back to northern I believe
True, but the exteriors were so depressing. The trains looked ' headless ', just a bunch of blunt ended coaches running about. Even now, most EMU trains don't look much better.
@TehDanScott not quite. slam door stock was replaced due to the weak bodyshell when compared to other types of stock. look at how the carriages at cannon street behaved after impact for an example, also they were replaced as spares were difficult to source, the doors were another problem (although B.R could easily have solved it)

Dayskipper the 442s are coming back in the new first mtr franchise. Sadly the 455s/456s and 458s are likely to be gotten rid of

pompeyman444 TPEs 170s all went to Chiltern and were converted to 168/3s
A superb archive 'snapshot'.
I really miss the old slam door trains, you felt like you were in a train and not an aircraft like the modern ones.

Take a look at the Yorkshire and Kings X Tornado video on here to see how they look now!
Miss the Old 442 & Slam Door Trains, We want them back
And 7 years later the 442s are back
Ping ping.... ping ping... stand in open guards door... until of station, close and do tickets. Oh by the way I’m in one of these videos 😃
Nothing, and I mean nothing, beats the sound of a slammer at full speed approach wizz past and leave.
@FirstGreatWestern43 slammers were replaces due to danger with suicides and that
None! They were all transferred to First Transpennine and work trains from Hull to Manchester via Huddersfield!
class 442s were good
