Thanks for sharing this, it was a joy to watch. My enthusiasm is all about Network Southeast era trains in London and I love to create scenarios in Train Simulator. Having videos like this as reference material is fantastic. I'll be checking out the rest of your videos. Thanks again.
Wonderful footage Darren. You must have some fond memories looking back at this footage from the 80's and 90's. Fantastic sounds from the 47's and especially the 50's!
Cheers Keith. 20's an unexpected bonus for sure! Who would've thought i'd be filming the same locos nearly 25 years later, all be it in a different livery and moving tube stock!
Great memories of number-hunting here for years! And a certain future lady loco driver was a guard through here that year (after becoming fasinated by the trains here the year before) and was being given goes in the 50's she told me hehe. I notice the withdrawn 4-PEP unit 4002 in the yard. It was removed for scrapping with other stock on Nov 3rd 1990 i think, by 73134 (a loco i modelled).
6:38 Stop it, you idiot! That made me laugh! Great video though. Lovely to see those 50s in particular. I guess 50049 had not been in that guise for long, following its conversion from 50149.
Thanks very much. I've got some more footage from Woking, Basingstoke, and surrounding areas to come this year too, so hopefully they'll jog your memory some more :-)
These were the days indeed! That 455 was a bit rare, but this was the start of era of new liveries coming in that would get mixed up from time to time.
If I was in charge all these trains would still be running today in these colour schemes to slam door trains would still be going strong aswell passinger numbers would of risen anyway without wasting millions on new trains signage and liveries all they had to do was replace track signals or whatever else needed at the time without privatisation
no because then every other country would have high tech high speed trains whilst the U.K. would have slow 1960s stuff not a very good impression is it
If I was in charge of this country all the projects such as the APT will make it into service and other projects such as the networker project; crossrail and Thames link 2000 These fine mk1 will still be going strong in the 21st century elsewhere such as the southwest mainline as Br didn't have any plans to replace them.
southeastern failways that's why you're not in charge. the U.K. Would be a laughing stock if it still had these old trains in service! they're slow, loud, boring, and just wouldn't work in the modern day.
Yes - i hasten to add the idiot wasn't me :-) Thanks for the comments. I never did get to see 50049 in 50149 guise, but did get out to follow the 'Hoovers' around on their final railtours when i could.
They were the best of the EMU's at the time, even though they were essentially Mk3 bodies on old EMU bogies/traction motors. Still going strong now of course, although not ideally suited to Gatwick Express shuttles.
+Crystal Mover (Of Greater Anglia) Yeah it's one of the best trains out there to this day it runs on the central and district line to Gatwick, really smooth ride
KasHCubeD They had an actual carriage that served hot food and drink not a trolley pushed along the aisles. From memory food served was hot tea and coffee usual stuff really, sandwiches, pasties and sometimes they had like a sandwich press thing that served toasted sandwiches. All this alongside snacks such as crisps, peanuts, cereal bars etc, and if i remember correctly alcohol was only served after 4pm? i could be wrong on that though. It was usually easy to find the buffet car because it was next to the smoking carriage which did smell horrendous i must admit and this is coming from a smoker! Hope i could be informative :)
Much appreciated. I do recall having a hot pepperoni pizza aboard the London to Norwich Intercity when I was a kid. That was what sparked my interest in buffet cars; it blew my mind being able to get pizza on a train. They had a chef on board too, and I watched her bake my pizza while preparing other meals for the First Class passengers. Then there was the canned sparkling orange juice with a cup of ice. I could never find that anywhere since.
+KasHCubeD That's pretty slick to be fair, i've had cooked food on trains in Europe but never a pizza that's pretty cool. On the TGV and ICE trains in France and Germany they always have good food. One of the most interesting buffet experiences I had was in Lithuania and Estonia right over eastern europe near russia. Each carriage had a big copper boiling water vessel at the end of the seating compartments and you could just help yourself to free hot drinks whenever you wanted because it was absolutely freezing! There was also like a little hotplate so if you had some bread or something you could toast it on there too! Pretty awesome i thought. And they had a trolley that only sold alcohol and it came out when you were crossing borders between countries so the booze was tax free. The gauge of the rails changes between countries over there so sometimes you have to get off and they lift the carriage off the bogies with a big crane and put it on the correct gauged set for the new rails, that was fun to watch. Most mental experience was Hungary though on the subway I got off and there was some guy passed out drunk on the platform so i asked if he was alright, next thing i know he is the one asking me for my ticket! He was an actual ticket inspector! Crazy stuff. Interesting fact the Class 442 holds the world record for the fastest electric third rail train. Apologies for taking ages to reply!
In all my years I've never seen a harlequin 455 before. Thanks very much!
Great video. I used to live in one of those high rises off of Grant road. Had a fantastic view of the station. Gateway! Now Asda :-)
Wow I love the NSE Livery and those slamdoor stocks even though i was born much later but i can picture this in '89
Facinating stuff Darren. All that lovely nostalgia.. 20's as well. great stuff
I love all the rattling and squeaking of the slam doors, as well as the distinctive voice of NSE era announcements.

Yep, loved those slam door EMU's, and nice tones as you say :-)
Great old video of this Clapham Junction Train videos of the Old trains

Great video, lovely to see some classic footage from a station I know so well. Odd to see that mixed-liveried 455 at the beginning!
Clapham Junction was a far more interesting place back then.
Thanks Hayden. Yes, some great memories for sure, and plenty of great sounding locos around in this period compared to today. Plenty more to come!
Absolutely brilliant footage . Thanks for sharing .
Love the enthusiastic horn with the 12slam belting through. Good old Mk1s
Clapham Junction looked great in 1989
Thanks Chris. Plenty more great sounding 'Hoovers' to come in future 'classic' movies!

I still miss the old 'A' box as much as anything else.
Yes, that was a real feature back then.
Great film..i just about remember some of them units was only 12 that year lol. Excellent stuff !
Love the good old shunting and stock haulage back then. Now all we have is boring electrostars and other foreign trains that's all over the network.
These were the days indeed! That 455 was a bit rare, but this was the start of era of new liveries coming in that would get mixed up from time to time.
Thank you very much - and i'm happy to share :-)
Right at home! Brilliant....
The good old days :)

+Trainbuff2008 We should run the country man
no because then every other country would have high tech high speed trains whilst the U.K. would have slow 1960s stuff not a very good impression is it
Christ you're thick!

The apt was unreliable af, and that's why it was taken out for service.
Yes - i hasten to add the idiot wasn't me :-) Thanks for the comments. I never did get to see 50049 in 50149 guise, but did get out to follow the 'Hoovers' around on their final railtours when i could.
lovely stuff
Nice horn from that CIG 3:14!
I guess so, and maybe a little bit robotic too! I much prefer the live announcements and people that throw a bit of humour and life into them as well.
Great vid, Is that a class151 in the yard?? Also nice to Cross Country Inter-city on platform17,fab memories, thanks
Withdrawn 4-PEP unit.

CLAPHAM JUNCTION IS A GREAT RAILWAY STATION
i love it announcements - so posh
Great video.
Thank you.
Is the Class 442 still in service?
Yes, Gatwick Express still operate the Class 442s on their Victoria-Gatwick, and Victoria-Brighton services.
+Crystal Mover (Of Greater Anglia) Yeah it's one of the best trains out there to this day it runs on the central and district line to Gatwick, really smooth ride
love this video, excellent
what train was that at the end of the video
PEP prototype. Evolved into the class 313, 314, 315, 507 and 508
What does PEP mean
This is a 'real' british railway
By jove, wasn't the auto-announcement well spoken there. Sounds like a 1930s BBC announcer. "And here is the news."
pity clapham junction isn't this interesting now!
Delayed trains ,overcrowded and weird noise making desiros...
Did the Class 442 have a buffet car?
+KasHCubeD 90% of the time yeah so did the Slamdoors
+Jack Bauer What kind of refreshments did they serve?
KasHCubeD

Oh yes, must have been running with a spare car
