To me H&M is the IKEA of fashion. Affordable but well designed. I remember when Stella McCarthy designed a collection for H& M and it sold out of the NYC store. Folks lost their minds and it made the news.
I always liked H &M because the clothes feel current but not trendy.

I have a sweater from H&M that's at least 10 years old now. Tbf nowadays I only bring it out around Christmas because it's a red-and-white kind of fair isle design. H&M in Britain is a level up from Primark but a level down from River Island, in my opinion. However, for me, a major factor that wasn't covered here is their price tags; they've got every currency on them. This shows the customer that they're a global brand, if you're abroad on holiday and need a t-shirt or undies in a pinch you've always got H&M because you've seen the tag with US Dollars, British Pounds, Swedish Kroner and many others. This also lowers printing costs and has a small environmental impact.

We don’t have River Island in the US, but I’m familiar with it, and we’ve recently started getting Primark. Your statement is pretty accurate. River Island is more adjacent to Zara in my opinion.

Agree w you about penneys/primark - but in no way is river island above h&m. Anytime ive tried river island its always filled with nasty, sparkly tat, plastic shoes and plastic coats, outrageous prices for what you get in terms of quality. Bought a leather skirt in their a year ago, worn it about 10 times and its peeling. Paid 60 quid for it. Ridiculous. I do love their handbags though.

I live in the UK and a H&M replaced a BHS (which was a home store brand that fell into bankruptcy) in my local mall which is about 30 minutes away from where I live. It's usually quite quiet in that H&M. Probably because there is another clothing store (called Primark) in the same mall which sells clothes for dirt cheap prices.

As a result they get plenty of traffic and I'm sure it's worked out well.

@@freakytostadacartoon I think they change materials on products from time to time. I used to love their jeans, but they started to make mostly thin stretchy type jeans so I stopped buying them. I recently went in and saw some more rigid less stretchy jeans similar to what I used to wear. I also have a really old tank top from over 10 years ago that’s held its shape vs some t shirts from recent years that haven’t held up as well.

On a trip to Egypt, the airline lost my luggage (yet again) so i had to buy some clothes to get me by. I went to H&M and found enough clothes for my trip. They weren't the cheapest and the locals said I paid way to much for what I bought. At first I liked the quality and comfort but after each wash the clothing aged noticeably. By the time my quick 3 week trip was over, the clothes were ready for the trash. Also, I bought 3 pairs of shorts which were all labeled the same size but they all fit differently. It seemed like the store sold clothes that normally would not be sold anywhere else. I have never shopped at H&M in America so maybe the quality is better here.
