Overwhelming. Truth. When I first started working in a bookstore I was astounded by the size of the self-help section. "Shame is a virus that eats you from the inside.,". So well said 💞
I found it so relatable when you said you needed to know WHY something was good for you. I know for me, as someone with autism, I need the wider context around what I'm doing. Thanks for another awesome video, Cinzia!
The self help genre books that have helped me the most is How to ADHD by Jessica McCabe and How to Keep House While Drowning by k.c. Davis. Highly recommend them.
Absolutely, needed this list of books right now. At 68, I'm just now finding out that I probably have ADHD. The shame book will be my first read. I have always been shamed for being highly intelligent but not achieving success according to family standards. I appreciate you dear one.
Thank you for the recommendations. Being neurodivergent and failing to find self-help books which are applicable to myself has been difficult. I picked up Essentialism after watching one of your previous videos - it is on my to read shelf. I have enjoyed Darren Brown's books before, so I will put in a request at my library to stock it! Stoicism has been the one self-help philosophy that I have clicked with. Watching your videos is like having my thoughts displayed on screen. You do an amazing job!
I read Dr Devon Price's book about Unmasking Autism, and it was amazing. It really helped me realise that I'm autistic (though not officially diagnosed).
"I really should do more yoga" I kept saying for about 4 years. By chance, I am now a receptionist for the local yoga studio and can join lessons as a benefit to working there :D
i'm ND and has chronic conditions, and i really appreciate this! i had a phase when i consumed a lot of self help content, and though there are lots of smaller great tips, as a whole they tend to not be very realistic for my specific situation. Dr. Devon Price also wrote Laziness Does Not Exist and Unmasking Autism, which might benefit lots of people here too :)
I'm also a big fan of Dr. Devon Price. Their book "Unmasking Autism" was what pushed me to get an autism diagnosis in my late 40s. Thank you for the great recommendations and insights!
These all sound excellent! The one on happiness sounded cool, I have limited interest in Greece beyond Grecian plays but I certainly don't deny their huge contributions to philosophy and I am fan of Roman stoicism. I may buy the last one especially, due to my interest in the benefits of meditation. Anecdotally, I know it has tremendous calming effect on me. And it's essentially just paying attention, spending some time noticing our own emotions and thoughts, who wouldn't want to become more aware of their own thoughts, so they can know their mind better and be more accepting both of negative and happy thoughts, rather than suppressing them or pursuing negative thoughts obsessively. All the very best, Cinzia.
*adds all of these books to my TBR* Also, this might have been slip of the tongue, but neurodiverse VS neurodivergent got a bit mixed up in this video. Neurodiversity refers to the entire range of how human brains function. Neurodivergent refers to individual people whose brain function diverges from the norm - this includes neurotypes such as ADHD, Autistic, Dyslexic, Tourettes, etc. Sonny Jane Wise and their book 'We're All Neurodiverse' is a great resource, they are considered a leader in this space.
Can you please upgrade your description of this video with a list of books discussed in your video. It would help us AuDhD people get the books, and check them out, buy a physical copy, e-book, or audiobook would be great. With being people with executive function challenges, it is hard to keep track of the books after 3 or 4 recommendations. I love the video, but honestly, it takes over a year, that rewatching helps with the algorithm and number of views to go up. So please help us with a list. As I have seen other comments.
One that has both helped me with my personal trauma and changed my entire mindset was What Happened To You? by Dr Bruce Perry and Oprah Winfrey. It was life-changing.
As an neurodivergent, I read a lot of self help books, and after a lot books and time, I see that they was more harmful to my mental health, what really helped was reading real profound and deep philosophical books. The perspective that self help gave me ultimately was just an fake and artificial perspective, Wich stopped me from facing the real problems in an efficient way.
Thank you Cinzia, I learned a lot and many issues resonated with me.I have taken your recommendations and bought the books. Take care, and just delete the unhelpful comments. I subbed to the Spotify podcasts althought it won't feel the same (I am a visial learner-Asd late diagnosed) Best wishes.....
What a wonderful video, I'm getting into reading self-help books and these look like they would be great. I read Atomic Habits by James Clear and liked how he referenced other self help books and basically compiled all of those books and his personal experiences into it.
I just finished Your Brain on Art (Neuroæsthetics) and am currently enjoying The Dalí Legacy before jumping into The Da Vinci Legacy and Picasso’s War and then Dream Psychology. Not sure this bibliography is constructive for you or your audience. But I am sharing it so At least the algorithm is feed to satiation.
Thank you! i read many and it was like.. well this isnt it. But i also read Mindset by Carol Dweck, i began reading it because iam a teacher and was just curious what her vision was. And altough i think her book isnt ment as a self help book it helped out so much. Being neurodivergent (and not knowing about it) made me extremely anxiencious and i always fell in the self fulfilling prophecy of well when i just dont do anything i technically dont fail. XD Its about the growth mindset but more the sience behind it, and i think thats the diverence for many neurodivergent people. We can make the connections ourselves (and then it is when it works best) And we dont like being told what to do, because we have like 10k scenarios in our heads already XD I will look into your reccommendations! thank you again!
"Healthy Gamer" and "TimEnergy" are both good books, kinda-ish in the self help genre. (Psychology and Philosophy) "The Burnout Society" is also a great recommendation.
I really enjoy the Healthy Gamers videos, I didn’t know he had a book! I’ll definitely check that out. I think Burn Out society will hit a bit too close to home haha
@@SelfHelpShelf health gamer is great, but his book is a parenting oriented one, so take of that what you will. Burn out society is more philosophical sociopolitical analysis kinda book, but very profound and relevant to our times I think.
I've generally found self books a complete waste of time. I read many of them when i was much younger to try and understand myself. But i stopped reading them about 20 years ago because i could not relate the advice in them to myself. I didn't feel they were written for me in other words. Coincidentally i started transition about the same time and i haven't seen any self books about that, just books about other people's experiences. The only one of the 5 you mention i might read is the "Devon" one. You might want to put the titles of the books in your description here, otherwise we have to stop and start the video to catch what you said since you were talking very fast this time. Good to see you back on here though!
Thank you so much for this video ! All of the books you recommended are going straight to my book list !! I'd recommend "I survived capitalism and all I got was this lousy T-shirt" by Madeline Pendleton, she's full on adhd and writes about managing your finances :)
I don't believe in self improvement books. I can't make myself better than another. People tell me I just haven't found the right book but I doubt that. Study, I believe, can be a virtue. But I petered out years ago reading books meant to make you a better person. I don't believe in self improvement period. If something improves something else dies. I have tried and tried and tried.
Really glad you're back... As a Divergent myself, i enjoy your videos. Makes me kinda feel optimistic in a way . Somewhere i was feeling you wont be back. when i saw notification, i jumped up and down. I never comment but want to say Thanxx😊🤍

Saw this video while distracting myself with youtube instead of focusing on language learning, which I started doing while procrastinating my writing.
This resonated :)

I'm not neurodivergent, as least as far as I can tell, but that was incredibly interesting. Please keep making more of this sort of content Cinzia.

Great job, Ma'am. Keep up the good work.
Great suggestions. Would love to see another or updated video on your previous No Buy year.
I didn't know Dr. Price had published another book - I loved Lazyness does not exist, so just had to get the new one!
I hope this is not unwelcome, but I've heard long covid can cause many health issues while not showing up in bloodwork

I'm halfway through Devon Price's "Unmasking Autism" so I'm interested in this title! Into the TBR it goes, thank you for the review!
