My best friend asked me if he could be my boyfriend. I thought he was joking because he used his serious face and voice(he would do that with jokes before). I then saw his reaction and I felt bad for laughing. I told him I did not want to loose our friendship. He then explained why he wanted to date me. It was hard for me at first, coming from a bad relationship. This relationship was very different in a good way.
We have been happily married for 5 years. We have a 3 year old and a 1 and half year old.
Even when we argue or disagree (not often, but happens) about something instead of calling a time out I say I need to talk to my best friend...he says the same..lol it works.

That's honestly the best way to do it. I started hanging out with a girl from my friends group and we were both serious about not dating anyone so it took all kinds of pressure off whenever we were hanging out. We were married by the end of the year.
I don't think the romantic type of love is special. And I am started to think that the romantic type of love isn't real. I mean about more than half of romantic couples either break up with each other or divorce each other, while most platonic best friends remain friends until death.
I think that having a platonic best friend is a lot better than having a romantic partner or spouse is. Having someone who's like a sibling to you is a lot better than having a romantic partner or spouse. Also, you are more likely to be much more closer to someone who's like a brother or sister to you than you would be with a romantic partner or spouse.
People tend to fight with their partner or spouse a lot more than they do with a platonic best friend, and you never fight with your best friend the way you fight with your partner or spouse. Partners and spouses are just temporary. If you break up or divorce them, it's hard to go back to them. With your platonic best friend, you're going to make things work, because they are your best friend, they are your go to partner. It's always easier to make amends with them than it is with a romantic partner or spouse.
Romantic relationships are pointless, while platonic relationships are not.

Great story. My wife and I are also medical school sweethearts. Met in 1st year, got married between 2nd and 3rd. We have been together now for 43 years. We even retired at the same time and now are grandparents! Even better than being doctors. It does work though not without struggles along the way. However, nothing that really matters is easy but well worth the effort. It has been quite a journey.
I am a medical doctor, too. I didn’t want to marry my colleagues before due to the high incidence of promiscuity amongst them. But after seeing your story, I am having a rethink. Just maybe, I could have a wonderful love story too. Just maybe.

Excellent story. I’m a middle-aged man. Been through a lot of different relationships and situations. My advice for anyone crushing on a close friend falls under two categories:
If you only kinda like them, just forget it. Enjoy the friendship, maybe try to put a little bit of distance to maybe help you like them a bit less. Unless you have reason to believe they have feelings too. Then just go for it.
But if you REALLY like them, might even be in love with them, you HAVE to tell them. For both of your sakes. One of two things will happen:
1 - They will reject you, and you should end the friendship to be able to move on and eventually get over them.
2 - You will find out they like you too, and you can get married like this dude.
There is a third outcome too after you confess your feelings: She says she’s not sure and she needs time, and keeps you stuck in a situationship leaving you wondering for months or even years where things are going.

My best friend since middle school asked me to make a pact with him in 9th grade, that if we both weren’t married by the time we were 30, we’d marry each other. Well, when we were only 18, right after high school he had a horrible accident. He fell 12 feet onto concrete while bike riding and broke his neck in 2 places, fractured his skull and had bleeding in his brain. He very nearly died. We were inseparable from the day he got home from his 8 week stay in the hospital, we began dating and were married just 6 months later. It’s 15 years of marriage this year and we have 2 sons. The “friend zone” is sometimes just a really comfortable and natural place to be that builds a genuine relationship and core friendship that will sustain much longer than any other kind of relationship. He’s still my best friend. 💜
Thank god he recovered. 12 feet made hurt all over right now. Also what a lovely story to tell the family for generations to come.

Had a similar conversation with my best friend. She was talking to a guy at the time (I know this is irrelevant but for those insecure guys out there this dude was literally a foot taller than me lol) anyway so I told her how I felt and told her it was up to her that I still wanted to be friends first. And the other guy who she had dated for years and broken up with but was still talking to, told her she should be with him. You might be surprised. I think that a deep and honest friendship is the foundation for relationships that last. If he tried this without the foundation of a true friendship, it wouldn’t work. If he tried it and then tried to manipulate her into marrying him so as not to break his heart, he would get a rejection or just pity. He said his piece and told her it was OK if her feelings were different or if she wasn’t ready or if she decided not to marry him. He left the choice entirely up to her, gave her time, and continued being her friend. He loved her and was also a true friend to her.

In 1981, I summoned my courage, and told my best friend the same thing. She was scared, but knew that I was a safe friend, no matter what. We got married in 1983, and she put up with me, until cancer took her away, in 2017. ( 34 years ). 7 1/2 years later, I still miss her everyday! In some sense, she is still, the best friend ever. I look forward to seeing her in Heaven! BTW, We had, and I have, 3 amazing kids, that light up my life, and remind me of her, every day. Very blessed.

Great to hear. This is similar to my wife and I. We have known each other since kindergarten. Never dated throughout school, matter of fact, never really even payed attention to each other. About 5 years after school, and I had done military service, we ran into each other at a mutual friend's wedding (to be honest, it was a subtle setup). For a year or more, we hung out as friends, filled in for each other when we needed dates for events, just had a blast hanging out with each other. Util one day, I looked over at her and there was a whole different feeling, my heart fluttered, I just felt different. I knew I had to tell her, and if she didn't feel the same way, we needed to back apart. Wow, she felt the same way. This October, we'll have been married for 30 years. We've had a few squabbles, but no fights. We've been through some real tough times and some real good times. We've done it together. Good for y'all. I truly believe that marrying your "best friend" give you a real strong foundation to build your life on. I hope your next 30 years are as happy and filled with love as ours have been. Looking forward to the next 30!!

If so, let me give you some general advice. I'm a woman who is married to her best friend, and I was the one who asked him out. I dated guys before I dated my best friend, and in general I found when guys are younger than 25 they tend to not want to marry, many want serious relationships, but when marriage becomes a reality they get cold feet, can become resentful, or just straight up realize you aren't the one they would want to marry.
I would suggest in the pre-25 years to build friendships, focus on learning about yourself and learning to love yourself, so that when you do date and/or get into a serious relationship you know your own boundaries.

It's also pretty bold to assume that desiring someone's time and attention is "predatory". Sometimes the feelings for another person are so strong that rather than risking losing their presence in your life you would rather suppress your own feelings for fear of driving them away. So let me ask you this...Would it still be "predatory" if the roles were reversed? Or is it just because this specific instance is predicated from the male perspective? Is it wrong for someone to want to be loved and try to build a bond with someone before actually getting into a relationship with them? Is it wrong to try and build trust before opening yourself up to another that could hurt you? Is it wrong to be nervous about rejection? You may need to lay off the feminism and come back to a more rational reality.
My daughter is now two years into a beautiful relationship with best male friend from school. It took them 8 years to realise they were perfect for each other. Its a great decision and they are really happy.
