    I can't even program drums this tight. Amazing.

    that's great to hear, lol. I didn't realise the kick was so active on the track. But to hear the cymbal work isolated from 4:24 is a treat. Also goes to show how hi-hat was used a lot by drummers back then compared to more recent times. The repeating hi-hat and switch to ride on the verses always stood out, but the existence of a constant and upbeat kick pattern throughout I never noticed before.

    just beautiful. i'm actually pretty surprised that the kick is so resonant.

      Yeah, it always surprised too. The true is that for the final mix, with all the instruments, the equalization is different. That's why you don't hear the humming.

    @jpritch2 i love the accents too. actually the best thing here. shows you don't need to play loud to play good. good taste is all it takes.

    @chillirodrigues It's a paradiddle between the ride bell and the snare drum :)

    I like the way Pick doesn't bash his crash for accents, just does and accent on his ride (zildjian K???) sounds great! so tasteful.

    Reason for most "drifting" is simply because of the actual machine the engineers were using at the time of the multiple masterings. In 1979, the original master was made for LP/Cassette/8-Track Cartridge by physically playing back the 1/2" mixdown tape. Later in the 80s when the CD was made, the tape was accessed again, then the re-master in the 90's, then the G-Hero version; all being done by different engineers on different machines, that have very slight differences in their motor tolerances.

    I think that's actually sympathetic resonance from the floor tom. When he hits the tom, it "hums" on the same note as we hear from the bass drum. BTW, I also noticed a couple of edits near the end of the tune... :)

    for those who wonder, sounds like the parididdle btween hh and cym... bass drum play right hand part but leaves out the double... could be wrong.

    I ripped the audio from this video and laid it side by side with the studio complete track. It is wave for wave the same drums. What I did notice is that the two tracks are about .15 seconds off of one another. Perfectly in sync in the beginning, or the end, they are off at the other end by .15 seconds. I think they may have stretched the track a hair for Guitar hero, or for some reason compressed the original recording slightly. Strange.

    Very incorrect, it is Withers on the drums, without question, but I welcome your dispute. As cheesy as this sounds, view the "Lip/Band Sync" performance of SULTANS from The SOLID GOLD TV program from 1980. No one, not no one could "sync" the performance as good as the original recordist did, and that was Withers. Lay in the upper search bar DIRE STRAITS SULTANS OF SWING SOLID GOLD, and amaze yourself, especially when Withers does his infamous :02 one-handed paradiddle on the ride near the end.

    Why do the fills sound like edits inserted into the track? Center channel, mono, no stereo image whatsoever, then suddenly back to the groove in stereo.

    • @mppaiges
      @mppaiges 6 років тому

      George Martin had a very odd way of miking all instruments, so he could get them in stereo and mono, back from the days before the Beatles, doing light to full orchestra work and comedy albums (Peter Sellers, the Goons, Anthony Hopkins, Peter Ustinov, Spike Milligan etc) so it was taught to him by his mentor, Oscar Preuss who mentored him and was at that time the head of EMI"s 'insignificant label", Parlaphone. And then one day a young man named Brian called him, and changed all their lives and the world on it's head- forever

    4:25 - I know what's he's doing with his hands (it's a paradiddle between the ride and snare) but what the hell is going on with his feet?
