"Sultans of Swing" Lyrics
You get a shiver in the dark
It's raining in the park but meantime
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowing Dixie double four time
You feel alright when you hear that music ring
Well, now you step inside but you don't see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain to hear the jazz go down
Competition in other places
Oh, but the horns, they're blowing that sound
Way on down south, way on down south London town
You check out guitar, George
He knows all the chords
Mind it's strictly rhythm
He doesn't wanna make it cry or sing
Left-handed old guitar is all he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing
And Harry doesn't mind if he doesn't make the scene
He's got a daytime job, he's doing alright
He can play the honky tonk like anything
Saving it up for Friday night
With the Sultans, with the Sultans of Swing
And a crowd of young boys, they're fooling around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles
They don't give a damn about any trumpet-playing band
It ain't what they call "Rock 'n' Roll"
And the Sultans, yeah, the Sultans, they play Creole, Creole
And then the man, he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
"Goodnight, now it's time to go home."
Then he makes it fast with one more thing,
"We are the Sultans, we are the Sultans of Swing."

The spacing and the groove is just genius.
Pick Withers is one of the most underrated drummers. Also shows how the *bass is always the needle and thread that sows it all together*, whether noticed or not. I always thought John Illsey was very restrained through all of DS's 6 albums + 1 EP, yet heard in isolation it shows what a solid bedrock he provided for Mark Knopfler to stand on.
They were mad to let Pick Withers go. He was fantastic. But he got sick of Knopfler not letting him choose which drums to hit on which beat.
@@barthvapour I've a theory. MK (I love him) let his ego get the better of him. Pick got sick of seeing this (must have really started to rear its head with the MK DK split). Pick's been second hand quoted as saying he got tired of the band getting too rock and roll. I interpret it as this getting tired of the egos. MK himself has, post BIA, obliquely commented on how the pressures of stardom mess life up. I love Terry Williams in Alchemy live, perfect drummer for that, but all over the studio versions, Pick is just absolute king.
@@barthvapour He left to pursue jazz music.. last I seen he was playing in the Gary Fletcher Band and been doing the blues stuff for a while
Sounds like Pick should be the name of the bassist.
@@ksoman953 I actually can't stand Terry Williams' overplaying on the live version. Amazing drummer, totally wrong for Dire Straits. He puts drum fills after every line almost, it's completely wrong. The genius of Pick Withers is the tight jazz feel he brings to it.
I really appreciate this account. Funnily enough I don't play bass, I just really enjoy hearing it by itself . I always study to this playlist.
Glad you enjoy it!
I don't play any instrument, and also enjoy this. All my life I have tried to listen to the individual instruments in any song I like, so I really appreciate it when folks put up videos like this one. Great stuff.
@@goopah do you mind sharing some of your favourite songs?
@@sadivisn My favorite songs are always changing, but I'll give you my playlist of favorites so far this year:
Avantasia: The Seven Angels or anything from the first two Metal Opera albums.
Foreigner: Head Games or anything else from that album.
Rainbow: Street Of Dreams or anything else from that album (Bent Out Of Shape).
The Babys: Anything from the Head First album.
Billy Joel: The Stranger album.
I guess I just gave up on listing songs and went with whole albums instead. Otherwise it's too difficult.
I wish music players had a STFU button to remove vocals. I'd like so much more music if I had that feature.
Magnificently tight rhythm section.
Nice combination between drum and Bass❤
my favorite Dire Straits song (oh and i'm 52🙃)
Pick Withers, what a drummer!
Just love these instruments only tracks. It makes me appreciate it even more 😎😎👍👍
thank you so much
You should do Another one bites the dust by queen. That's got one of the greatest bass lines EVER!

Please do Money For Nothing isolated bass, or isolated bass and guitar.

Illsley's playing is solid and basic but could use a few more fills or ideas. I know he didn't want to interfere with Mark's playing but still...
what is exactly BPM?
Beats per minute
@@romeboi yeah I know. I mean what's time BPM song?

Mix is way too bass heavy.
Hilarious
its pretty much perfect if you run it beside the isolated guitars track
Sounds about perfect to me. Amazingly tight. Let’s mark do all his frilly solos knowing he has such a foundation.
We got a regular Lars Ulrich right here
ii nailed it - except the singing - FAIL
