I agree. This was MK at his peak (playing wise) in this performance he took his guitar to the limit. If it was a racing car the engine would have blown up before the end. Some great guitarists have got amazing skills and can impress us but every note Mark plays is purely for the song and nothing about showing off.
@@Puzzlecat He should be inducted in the hall of fame just for that if hes not already :).... Welsh people need to be famous for more than good archers :)
Agreed! It’s hard to believe he wasn’t considered good enough to play on their next album (except the intro to Money for Nothing). He rocked it again on the tour, though.
They really are, and they know it. That bit at about 4:00 where Terry just goes off and Mark just gives him that look like, "what has gotten into you man? Go for it."
was married in Feb 83 and we saved all our money to go watch Dire straights Love Over Gold Tour at the Hammersmith Odeon in London on 23rd July 1983 instead of going on a honeymoon to Italy We still don't regret it. :-)
The best part about Knopfler and Sultans is that he doesn't know what the solo is going to be before he plays it. There are some key staple bits he keeps each performance, but he just improvises for 75% of it and it's always so good.
The Drummer, Terry Williams is from my home city, I'm only pointing that out as hardly anyone comes from Swansea. I met him one in the late 90's as his band was playing in the Workingmans club that my dad ran in Port Talbot, he very nicely signed my copies of Alchemy, Brothers IN Arms and a Meat Loaf album he was on called Deadringer. An amazing drummer and a gentleman.
I'm only 75 years of age, and I have also seen them live. Great gig. Greetings from Sydney, Australia. This live version is the best of the best. Love the guitar solo towards the end. Magic.
The drummer always stood out to me as well. Of course the guitar is the star, but this is one of the few songs where the drumming isn't just forgotten in the background. Amazing drum work.
I was born in 1960 , in 1977 I was 17 years old and bought their debut self-titled album on a whim . I was in the record store just browsing . Picked it up and brought it home . Put it on , the house was empty , cranked it and I was instantly hooked . The album from start to finish was incredible . Sultans of swing was the big hit but the rest of the album was ... I just kept playing it over and over . Bought the cassette for the car , got my friends hooked too . I saw them twice live . Once for the Brother's in Arms tour and The Telegraph Road tour . I was a foot off the ground , smooth incredible guitar work by Mark Knopfler . He wrote all the songs , all the music and IMHO he's the greatest guitarist not named Hendrix . He's never even in the conversation . I'm so glad you're listening to this now , makes me so happy you've rediscovered what I found so many years ago . Awesome video , you seem sincere . Chris
This is why you should try hard to find live videos. This was phenomenal. I was never a huge Dire Straits fan but after this, I will be searching for some more live music. Of course I know this song and many others (don't think I don't love music) but I am seeing them in a new light.
You are right man, that drummer is AWESOME! Terry Williams is my favorite Dire Straits drummer and one of my favorites in general. And Mark Knopfler`s guitar playing, well I don`t even mention it because I have no words for it.....
Dude!! Dire Straits in full Beast Mode. The boys just throwing down one of their iconic hits live, and bringing it so hard, man get out of the way! These guys were the real deal x 10!! Smashing live performance. Thank you so much for this one
Knopfler is one my favorite guitarists! And yes, his drummer is dynamite! Dire Straits was at its peak when I was in my 20s and truthfully, I took all the music from that era for granted. Now I'm older and wiser, realizing what a truly magical time it was, full of many bands with marvelous talent, unmatched through the ages.
My No.1 all time favourite song and version! I never get tired of listening to this! Love seeing new listener's reactions, so thanks for sharing! Knopfler is a guitar god and his lyrics always draw an awesome picture.
The lead licks in that song are easier to ginger pick, especially the lick that begins at 11:51. I can't get that with a pick, but finger picking it is easy, it's just more natural. It's much earlier in the studio version of course, but to me, that's the signature lick of the song. His style is coming from a flat picking type fingerpicking method, and it can be really fast. Think Chet Atkins and Lindsey Buckingham for that style, but of course there are a ton of others as well. It's a bluegrass type thing.
Love the reaction. Dire Straits are one of the best bands ever. Mark Knopfler one of the best guitarists ever. Amazing performance. This concert is what got me into Dire Straits and I have loved them ever since.
Like a wise man once said, "Mark Knopfler is my inspiration to give up playing the guitar." He has more talent in his little finger than I have with two hands.
Loved seeing your true reaction as you watched along.... I know at first you were hooked by the Drummer, but then Knopfler and his Stratocaster won you over by the end!! Wonderful to see no barriers exist in music!
Your right. The drummer is right on. This whole band is great. If you start digging into the Dire Straits you'll find a bunch of songs that are gems. I've loved em since I first heard them when this song was new. Great reaction. Thanks.
Dire Straits was one of my late brother Jesse's favorite groups. They are phenomenal!!! Fact, they had asked Vince Gill to join up with them at about the time Vince Gill had just signed his first recording contract. He would have fit in quite well due to his amazing guitar work.
The Recorded Version is beautiful being my Favorite of all time songs in my 70 years of life. The Live performance which is the Long Version is just too awesome to be real, but Truth is before our eyes. The song keeps hooking you in. Just when you think the music can't get any sweeter the music hits a new level. And then another and another and another. Artistically gorgeous.

Knopfler singing and playing lead guitar yes in the top 5 beat guitarists out there plus this is all finger picking no actual pick. Legendary for sure, right up there with Clapton and Gilmore

Interesting the crossovers between Dire Straits, Meat Loaf and Springsteen's E street band - Roy Bittan on keyboards in all

Terry Williams gave Dire Straits lives the driving soul, groove, kick, made 'em sound like a true rock 'n roll band.
Thomas Jakob you’re spot on Pick Withers was an incredible rhythm drummer but Terry gave them the rock n roll edge which gave them the push
