Breville Grinder Burr Settings and Adjustments

  • *NOTE*: The newer Breville Barista Pro machines come with updated Baratza burrs. The default setting on these new burrs seems to be more suitable for espresso and most likely will not require a burr adjustment right out of the box. So don't adjust the burr until or unless you need to!!

    Thank you so much!! I have only had my Barista Pro for a few months and I am frequently at a grind setting of 2 or 1 and still not getting the pull I wanted. I was getting disappointed in the grinder until I found this video and your channel! I can’t wait to get my range adjusted!❤

      Hi Brian - can I ask you, how long does it take your grinder to gind 18g of beans on the very fine setting? Mine takes so long (around 25 seconds), I wonder if that's normal? Thanks!

      @Jontiramizoo machine BaristaTouch, Beans: Brooklyn Roasting Company, Peruvian, dose 19.5 gram, machine takes about 40 sec.
      But the shot tastes good.
      So i think the breville grinder is crap, sometime i put 19.5 and i get 18 and sometime i put 19.5 and get 21g, i am saving for an lagom P64 now. Espresso hobby is a money black hole, cost thousands for tiny bit of improvement. Its all about the happiness we experience, so will have to bite the bullet.

    WOW! You saved me HOURS of stuffing around. I've just upgraded my coffee rig the Dual Boiler and the Smart Grinder Pro. I would have NEVER tried this combinations and it would've taken me a truck load of beans before I stumbled across these setting.
    Mine is at 3 for the burr and 8 for the grind, but I suspect that the humidity today is killing the beans. In winter (and outside of the cyclone ripping down the coast making things muggy) I'm suspecting that 7 might be the more common setting. Now to get my wife's Decaf sorted and I will be in heaven!

    When you got the machine new were you still grinding on lower finer setting? I have a barista touch, considering the built in grinder is the same as the pro. I have always managed to get a perfect shot in the range of 13 to 15 outer grind settings for 18-20gms of beans. Never had to touch the inner bur settings. Now am confused if am doing something wrong or probably breville have updated the grinder. I bought the machine last month.

    i have unfortunately maxed out my smart grinder pro. my burrs are set to finest, and the grind size to finest and would still get bad shots (i use a gaggia classic pro with pid and pressure set to 6 bars, upgraded basket and i use a puck screen). previously, when it just discovered the burr adjustment, i would get decent shots, but after a while i noticed it was kind of becoming bad again.) so i thought, maybe its something that needs regular recalibrations. i was wondering if theres a way to check if the burrs are aligned/calibrated or something.

    Almost about a month now and finally i am getting close to a decent shot. Im using beans from Brooklyn roasting company, machine: Brista Touch, inner burr 4 and outter 15, dose 19.2 gram, yeild 40gram in 30 sec. My shots have a tiny bit of sourness and dryness (not too bad), for now I am just pulling a longer shot for 38 sec 57 grams to remedy this. If i grind at 14 i get 20grams in 30 sec. But a lot of thanks to you, your videos really helped. Lots of Love ❤️.

    • @HijabsandAprons
      @HijabsandAprons  Рік тому +1

      Hmmm usually a sour taste indicates that your shot is too fast, so you might want to drop your grind size down to 14 but also drop your dose down to 18.5-ish. Make sure the dose you're measuring is the grounded coffee, not the weight of beans you're putting in. Remember that the grinder retains a lot too. So you might think your dose is 19.2 but is actually around 18.5 🤷🏻‍♀️ But ultimately taste is what matters most!

    • @ysamkabir9285
      @ysamkabir9285 Рік тому

      You were right, it worked. Shot is not sour or bitter anymore, just pure flavor. And also realized that beans im using has too much floral taste to it that I hate 🤣. Previously, the sourness made it taste very bold. Thank you so much, you made my life so much easier, I wish you too many good karma.

    I upgraded about 2 weeks ago because I had this problem with my old BE, even after replacing and adjusting the burr. I still don't get a consistent shot and I think I will have to step the burr down, will try 5 and play with the grind size. Not sure if a brand new grinder (Baratza burrs version) should give me inconsistency problems. Sometimes I feel like returning it and get a Baratza grinder to use with my BE. I do love the steam wand.

    • @brianhawthorne7603
      @brianhawthorne7603 Рік тому

      A puddle on top of your puck means you have too much head space between the top of the puck and the shower head. If your dose is where you want it, you will need to get a smaller basket.

Still not getting a fine enough grind even though I’ve changed the outer burr settings down to 3 and then this morning to 1!!! I have to go to the finest setting and still i flows way too quickly. Today I put the outer burr setting at 1 and still had to have the main setting at 1 and the shot was too fast for proper extraction. Maybe my grinder is faulty?

    Hello,
    Quick question on Breville grinders installed on machines Vs their stand alone grinder "Breville - The Smart Grinder Pro", is the stand alone better/same/worse than the one installed on Barista Pro or Impress ?
    Dipping my toes into the Espresso world and Your answer would finalize my decision to go with Bambino Plus or one with installed grinders.
    While I am here which would you pick out of the 3 options please aka Bambino+ and seperate grinder or Impress or Pro.

    1. What do you keep your inner burr setting at? I have seen 3 vs 4 in your videos.
    2. In other videos, I have seen you use a Crema distribution tool. How did you get the correct height for the tamper?

    • @ysamkabir9285
      @ysamkabir9285 Рік тому +2

      Changes in inner burr setting are sometimes necessary depending on the bean, and especially when you change to a different bean.
      Let's suppose you are in a situation where at grind size 10 your shot is little to slow and at 11 its little bit fast. And you feel like if you were able to get grind size 10.5 that would be perfect. So you can then change your inner burr setting to 1 size finer, and increase your outter grind by 1 or 2.
      About the tamper, to the best of my knowledge, I think It does not matter how hard you tamp, As long It was tamp enough.

    • @HijabsandAprons
      @HijabsandAprons  4 місяці тому

      Don't change the inner burr until or unless you're at an outer grind size of 1 and your shot is still coming out too fast. No, it doesn't matter whether your portafilter size is 54 or 58 (though I'll point out that all Breville Barista Express and Pro machines are 54mm).
      Also very important note--the newer machines are made with Baratza burrs and I think Breville has adjusted them to be fine enough for espresso straight out of the box. So again, unless you're at an outer grind size of 1 and your espresso is coming out too fast/underextracted, don't adjust the burr

    I just got my Breville barista pro and man, this thing is frustrating haha! I've left the inner burr at the default and have been playing with different grind sizes with around 18-19 grams of coffee. Even on a grind size of 10 the shot comes out sooooo slowly... I've been trying to tamp with less force but it seems like I'm barely putting any force already and it still comes out slow! I adjusted it to a size 13 grind and got one good shot out of 18.5 grams with a 36 gram output in the correct time and flow rate, but when I tried to replicate, it came out too fast. I'm starting to hate this machine 🤣. Any advice would be appreciated!

      Did you change beans? Are you using supermarket beans or roasted within this month? If your shots are coming out that fast and such low pressure, you need to dose higher or grind FINER (so go down to burr of 2)

    I think Breville has made an adjustment given that so many people were adjusting the internal setting.
    I just bought a new Breville Express Impress and it came with an internal setting of 7. Because I had watched so many videos on needing to go finer, I changed mine to 5 without even pulling a single shot. When I did that, the machine was unable to push any water through even on the most coarse setting on the outside.
    After many tries, I’m back at 7 inside and 18 outside to finally get a good shot. 😂
