  • Join Harry, Marcus and Ruth for our June podcast. In this month's episode we discuss the story of the two men being charged with cutting down the UK's most photographed tree, we find out why a street in Japan is being closed to photographers and we look back at the huge aurora display. The Big Question this month asks why photography is so often expected for free and we discuss some of your input on the subject. We then vent a few travel frustrations before looking at some new products, asking, does the world really need them?

Thanks again for all the great content you consistently give us. It is a pleasure to listen to some photography related talk instead of constant gear advertisements. Photography means much more to me than gear does, if that makes sense. 😀

Great show guys and Ruth 🙂. Flying gets my goat too as I'm only 11st 4lbs, but if my luggage is 500g over the limit I'm asked to pay extra, however the gentleman behind me weights over 20st so I can't see how he gets an extra 9st more than me transported for his money but I get penalised for 500g - ridiculous! (on the way to Harrris & Lewis with you guys in 2023 this happened). SSD's are great for faster backups than existing traditional hard drives, but I agree that there isn't any real benefit to them whilst actually working on an image in LR/PS, but I value their reliability highly.

Thanks for the pod and interesting content.
I’m mostly defiantly an Amateur photographer and like to shoot things of interest. I have mid level kit which takes good quality images. I can compose a scene and therefore people do approach for free sessions or event photographs. I’ve had 2 recent occasions where a museum having a Victorian event and charging £25 pp to get in, called for the local camera club to give them free photos. Then the local council asking for free photo at a street parade. I won’t do it.
I know the ex-local newspaper freelance photographer who is all but out of work due to this. Unfortunately, most of what I see are poor record shots but still used by media. Very frustrating and can only result in declining standards.

It has been reported that the Aurora Australis , which is normally only seen from the most southern areas of Tasmania (Hobart is 42S), was visible in outback areas of Australia as far north as the NSW/Queensland border (29S). SO place like Melbourne/Adelaide/Perth/Sydney could see the Aurora , not necessarily with the naked eye but thru a camera sensor

Traveling with film: 1. In the US, they swipe EVERY roll for explosives (not drugs) with the detecting cloth. To speed things up, keep films out of the canisters. Don't keep film in the boxes because they will ask you to take them out of the boxes anyway. 2. In Japan and Taiwan, they will inspect every roll, but will not open film in original boxes. 3. Don't leave film in the camera. They will need to machine scan it because they don't want the liability of breaking your gear via hand inspection. 4. No hand inspection possible in Lisboa (Portugal) even if you asked nicely in Portuguese. They don't hand inspect ANYTHING.

Other scenarios which I've heard people use stitching of images in:
    - getting a wider angle of view than their lenses would otherwise allow (as in, you don't own a 10mm but need a 10mm focal length for your composition)
    - getting a shallower DoF at the desired angle of view than their other lens(es) would allow

Both of those scenarios are genuine though, as they will make a difference. Changing perspective is the one which fools people, as it does nothing of the sort. Thanks for giving us a listen and for taking the time to comment. All the best.

If you are travelling at the front of the plane, you have the choice to board last if you want. Whilst you cant jump the boarding queue you can wait until you are ready. I think there would be way more complaints if Business/First were told they had to board last.

This isn’t the point Mark. No one is told they have to board, but they always start boarding from the front of a plane, which makes no sense whatsoever. All it means is that everyone gets in everyone else’s way. If they loaded from the rear, then it would be so much more efficient.

On boarding, if you let the “economy” passengers board first, they’ll put their hand luggage in the bins at the front leaving none for the business class passengers. Easy to resolve, the cabin crew need to not permit this to happen. I took a flight last week and watched this happen with no comment from the stewardess standing across the aisle from the bin in question.

Having flown numerous times, I can honestly say that as regards hand luggage, I have never had it either checked for size or weight, but what is interesting is that my wife now needs a wheelchair, Electric powered, and the batteries need to be removed and put in the hand luggage, and is not counted as being 'additional' weight, and nor is the wheelchair (15kg) counted as additional luggage so do weight limits really 1:14:34 matter? Also on what's the point, the discussion on video, my gripe is why do we have to have video? I never use it and dont see why i have pay for it just because the manufacturer feels i might.!Tried to listen in Croatia, but got cut off halfway through, so re listening at home, great podcast all, thanks for the content interesting informative and entertaining👍

Hi Roger. The weight issue on planes is important to a degree, but isn’t as important as some airlines might make you believe. Weight is important in terms of safety. An airplane has to be within safe operating limits upon takeoff, as this is when it is at its heaviest due to having all the unexhausted fuel on board. If a plane is too heavy on take off, it can cause serious problems. The Air France Concorde was allegedly overweight when it crashed in Paris. They probably work to an assumption that every passenger will weigh 100kg and have 30kg of luggage (combined). In reality, most people will weigh less and have less luggage, so if someone is extremely heavy or has to have a 15kg wheelchair, it isn’t enough to upset the weights and balances of the plane. So most airlines don’t bother checking, as it really doesn’t make any difference unless everyone is overweight and has max luggage (which is never going to happen).

When it comes to airports it is all about economics for the port. They do not want to create ramps to and fourth to the rear exit door. At small airports there is normally no issue. They will put stairs at each end and you can exit at your closest door. The airline wants you off as quickly as possible, because it is all about turnaround time. When the plane is not flying the airline isn,t making mony.....

Hi Richard, your points are all valid but don’t address the issue. If turnaround time is so important (which I know it is) then why not load from the rear of the plane (when using only the front air bridge) as this would be far quicker. It’s mind boggling as to why they do it the opposite way round - so that everyone is in everyone else’s way.
