How beautiful! I’m 83 and you give me motivation to keep going with watercolor. Sometimes I think it’s defeated me. After watching you, I’m gonna keep going! Thank you.
Just saw your sign below your easel "INHALE CONFIDENCE EXHALE DOUBT" and have adopted it as my motto. I'm new to the world of art and need this reminder. Thank you! Love your work and demos!
love your wild flower demo plus I really enjoy your layed-back style. You dont need to explain in great detail to get the gist of what your conveying. Im not a pastel artist because the dust effects me but I learn so much from watching you create beautiful art. Thanks so much for sharing in real time and not speed time which doesn't help in ones learning.
Queen Anne's Lace and "bachelor buttons" (chicory) grows wild together along the roads in West Virginia and is one of my favorite flower combinations. Love this demonstration! Thank you Karen.
This is one of my favourites of your work that I’ve seen so far. I just love the balance between the softness in the background and the details of the flowers! Truly inspiring
Thank you, so pleased I came across you Karen your video's, blogs are so helpful...from a beginner in Australia, hope you had a wonderful birthday...keep up the good work very much appreciated.
Dear Karen: thanks for the time you put and make these videos,i love your work and learned a lot from you,i like the humble way you talk,i feel like you are family❤️❤️
Bbwhat a beautiful painting Karen. Many thanks for sharing it , a lot to learn from . Wishing you from Glasgow , Scotland a very happy birthday and many happy returns.
Thank you Karen. How did you know I wanted to paint some Queen Anns Lace. We just went for a drive and they were just so splendid. I wanted to take a picture but when my husband is with me, he will never stop. Going back today to get my reference photo. You inspire me to do better. Love you!
I learned so much in this video.... thanks so so much! Oh, and just a thought.... someone recommended in a video of mine for the camera angle to switch sides to see my strokes more clearly. I'm left-handed and had the camera over my left shoulder. After the suggestion, I started filming with the camera over my right shoulder, and it was indeed a better angle for seeing the pastel strokes. I just thought it might help to see your actual strokes if the camera was over your left shoulder. Just a thought, but no worries because we get the general idea. :) Beautiful painting!!!!
Thank you Susan!!! It's so funny you share that tip because after this video we decided to try that next time! I don't know what we didn't think of it sooner. I welcome any advice. You are doing such a wonderful job on your videos!
Karen Margulis .... awesome! It is indeed tough painting and making the videos. The painting part is way more important and why people love your work so much. Including me!
Thank you Karen for such a great video and for sharing your knowkedge and talent so generously. Do you have an image anywhere of the final painting as I would love to see this. Thanks again
The subject of Queen Anne's lace happened to lead me to my first look at your work. I enjoyed your commentary for its inclusion of the disciplines of avoiding thinking too much while painting, explanations of materials and rationales of various techniques throughout the process. Then I visited your channel page and blog. I liked the history of your development. The finished painting on the blog was especially rewarding! I would love to hear or read about your personal process of choosing pastels as your medium. Does it exist somewhere that you might direct me? Also, how did you learn to start a blog? And why was that integral in holding you accountable? Do you know of artists who do not subscribe to involvement in the social media? While I realize my own comment here is availing myself of this function, I'm wondering how one decides if it is worth all the time involved, and I've never encountered anyone who discussed the topic. You seem like a very caring, comprehensive and thoughtful artist, so I'll thank you for your consideration in advance. Good day with blessings.
Have you tried light acrylic washes(NOT ink) for underpainting? I have tried about everything and think that I will try this next with heavy Liquitex with gel medium to thin it. I have used wc but since I apply pastel medium over it it blurs. I would love to try something more finite and detailed. I am willing to trade my extra wc tubes for liquitex heavy acrylic if anyone is interested. Thank you for your beautiful tutorials¡
Such a wonderful video and of course a beautiful painting, but I'm having a problem distinguishing between colors of the darks. Am I the only one to whom it looks like one black pastel after another? I'm thinking my cataracts may be getting worse than I think. Or perhaps it's my computer. In person it probably looks different, but I have the Terry Ludwig darks and have a bit of the same problem with them. Very hard for me to tell them apart, unless i use them wet for an underpainting.
Dear Ms Margulis: I really appreciate your excellent tutorials and the candid way you share your knowledge and teach useful skills. I was impressed with neocolor II. Have you tried the Mungyo Water-Soluble Oil Pastel? Do they compare in quality and brightness of color? I think i would like to try the water soluble versions of these oil pastel sticks. THANK YOU
Karen, thank you so much for your wonderful lessons. I love your work. One of my friends, who works in a different art form, said she used to do pastels, no longer does because they don't hold up. I love working in pastels and I love the look of that medium. Could you explain what she meant by that?
Thanks for watching! I am not sure what your friend meant. It is known that pastels done hundreds of years ago are as bright and vibrant as the day they were painted. Pastel paintings done on archival surfaces don't crack or yellow and the archival artists grade pastels won't fade. Many people believe that pastel paintings are more fragile than other mediums. It is true that they need to be framed under glass but they are a lot sturdier than one might think. Pastels done right with the right materials will certainly hold up!
Do you have a list of your colors for this and what pastels do or did you use? I can not hear you and they are not posted, I am new to pastels and your paintings are really good. Thanks
Patty Shaw thanks for watching! I don't know the color names or keep track of them. I just try to get a color and value I need without worrying about the name. I do offer PDF demos on Etsy that show photos of my pastel palette for each painting. This way you can match what you have if you wish to paint along! Www.etsy.com/shop/karenmargulisfineart
PS: Were your Purple Cone Flowers on a cover of Pastel Journal? I saw one of your field paintings inside a recent journal. I think my friend (& instructor) Christine Swann was in that one, as well.
Lovely Queen Annes Lace & Chicory 😊 Chicory is an old substitute used for a coffee like drink. It's used in Folgers coffee (am I permitted to name them ?) to smooth out the blend; less bitter... No, I don't work for Folgers, L😂 L!!!! But I am an herbalist, among other endeavers, 😄 ThanX Much, Karen.
How beautiful! I’m 83 and you give me motivation to keep going with watercolor. Sometimes I think it’s defeated me. After watching you, I’m gonna keep going! Thank you.

Love that!

Your wina apology is very appropriate and descriptive.
Who makes the iridescent pastels?
I have some made by Sennelier and also by Diane Townsend.
PS: Were your Purple Cone Flowers on a cover of Pastel Journal? I saw one of your field paintings inside a recent journal. I think my friend (& instructor) Christine Swann was in that one, as well.
What video camera and microphone and special lighting do you use for your videos?
By the way I just placed an order for the art Graf carbon dip!
Hello, Sorry for my english I am French ... and I love your videos and the pastel... which paper use you to paint ? Thanks you

Forgot to say happy birthday 🎂❤️
I'm so glad you didn't cover up all the black paper background.......
Wow too bad I can't hear you very well. My volume is all the way up, I can hardly hear you.
lavonne carrick I’m sorry! Sometimes you can adjust the volume in UA-cam which is separate from you computer or device volume.
100% volume and can not hear you
Patty Shaw I'm sorry you cannot hear! I will be trying another camera . This was just an informal live demo on Facebook
You need a new videographer 😁
