    Fifty thousand people used to live here. Now it's a ghost town.

    having to go through this when i was 11 years old was beyond terrifying, it didnt really hit me til later how seriously critical the situation was.
    back then i was upset because my school trip to edmonton got cancelled, LOL

    Amazing to see such destruction..while sitting just across the street, houses untouched!!

    I gave this video a thumbs up, because of the filming from the flying helicopter so one can look at how much devastation there is. Hope that those who have no house get help very soon to rebuild their homes.

    Weird how the fire didn't jump onto some buildings that are in the middle of complete wrecked ones now.

      +Skada Possibly stopped by fire fighters.

    This looks like what happens regularly in California. Really big, fast-moving fires jump around this way, destroying huge areas and skipping over others right nearby.

    Well at least it's not a vertical video but it's pretty damn close. You sent someone all the way there and they come up with this ?

    Look at those neighborhoods, backed right up to the forest. Looks like they have a bike path for a fire-break...

    Rachel Notley needs to be brought up on charges of gross negligence and incompetence for her role in preventing the proper firefighting aircraft from being available for these poor people of Fort McMurray.

    Did they just abbreviate Alberta to Alta? Talk about picking all the wrong letters, jesus its AB. I really hope I'm wrong on this, and atla is for something else.

    • @Mcninjaguy
      @Mcninjaguy 8 років тому

      +Dhobbs Why would they even do alta? It would be ALBE if anything and that's not much shortened from Alberta.

    Not too bad a fire. The fire fighters did a good job.

    • @broganmcleod2556
      @broganmcleod2556 8 років тому

      +Will Wagner Yes the firefighters did a good job, but kind of a bad fire. Only the most destructive disaster in Canadian history -_- I've been evacuated from a fire before. I've seen billowing smoke clouds surrounding my home. And my fire was a small one compared to this. This fire was beyond belief.

  • @fdannn6926
    @fdannn6926 8 років тому +1

    The reality is that this neighbourhood wouldn't even exist if it weren't for the disgusting oil sands industry. Id say it was more of a disaster when this area of homes used to be forest, but was then clear cut to build these homes for people in the oil industry.

    I wondered which video would bring me to tears for this city. This is the video that did it. :( My heart breaks for all those who have lost homes and pets. I'm also pretty upset about how much wildlife lost their lives as well. So very sad. I freakin loathe arsonists. They need to be burned up and rid of.

  • @berner
    @berner 5 років тому

    I put some of the blame on the provinces damned "0 property line". I'm sure some houses could have been spared if developers weren't so hard up for building homes so fucking close to each other. But nope, gotta give people the smallest damned property available and to do that, you gotta build subdivisions with houses so god damned close to the property line to do it.

    I highly doubt insurance companies have the funds to make a payout of this magnitude. there has to be over 100 million in damages. I even might be low balling it.

    • @FlareStarchild
      @FlareStarchild 8 років тому

      +James Ortiz Of course they do. Its not like one company has all the policies in the town.

    • @brucie7350
      @brucie7350 8 років тому

      +James Ortiz low balling it by a lot. 5-9 BILLION was the latest estimate for all the damages. That video only showed the neighbourhoods of Abasand and Beacon Hill. There were 5 other affected neighbourhoods in the town.

      They might have the money but when a country declares "state of emergency" the government then pays 95% of the costs in insurance, the actual companies pay the remainder n are the ones in charge of distributing the payouts and services they r entitle to

    I'm just thinking how easy it would have been for all these laid off oil workers to get out of there mortgages/car payments they couldn't afford anymore.

    • @wdpm6424
      @wdpm6424 8 років тому

      You know insurance doesn't pay your mortgage or loan right? They pay the value to re construct or replace said property, if u have a 4 year old car and u owe $20000 the insurance will pay u the value of the car that is for example $15000 now the person has no car and a debt of $5000, same goes for the house... Can't believe someone could think that these people were "blessed" by going through Canada's biggest disaster in modern history

    why people left the cars? Why no one remove all the stuff from inside like furniture, and other belongings? Why the fire was a good distance away from the houses clear your house. Yep.. let them burn.

    • @jamesbaird1149

    • @dontcrywolf6810
      @dontcrywolf6810 8 років тому +2

      +James Baird igorant. yes, hes ignorant. but give the guy a bit of a break. not many people realize how quickly fires can move when they get that big. 10km/hr for the front, and much faster when embers shot forward with convection and wind ignite sometimes long distances ahead of the front.

      +Iain G you're right, the people of fort mcmurray dont need financial help, because only 5% of it will reach em, that's more of a slap in the face than not helping at all isn't it? lol if i wasn't 2500 or so km away in ontario i would help personally with the rebuilding effort, id be helping remove debris, rebuilding and shingling roofs day and night, remove the scorched vegetation, and try to bring nature back. but im too far away to personally help, sorry, don't take it personally? lol most anyone too far away can do is say " i hope you guys have a quick and efficient cleanup process, to get things back to normal and resume your lives".
