TYT is about as left-leaning as there is, and they had a segment saying pretty much the same thing as Maher about the backlash to Damon's anecdote. When someone recognizes a failing in their habits and resolves to correct it, you don't beat them down for taking too long, you embrace them for having the maturity to learn, adapt, and grow. I mean, it's fair to question why it took this long - maybe we can learn something from that inquiry. But you ultimately need to accept a good end-result as a win, thank the convert for making the effort to grow, and then collectively move on to the next battlefront.

I guess so but do we want every actor to be Daniel Day Lewis, like its one of those things that makes a certain amount of sense to him as an individual but if you look at what acting becomes at his level, ultimately there is a whole audience that wants to know you personally, that's part of Hollywood. Press tours. That's essentially part of the job. So this idea where you won't have a public persona, is just not realistic.

I’ve been to 49 of 50 states, except Alaska, served in the Marine Corps in Afghanistan, now working DoD on active service member housing. The far left and far right have wayyyy more in common than you’d think. They both create issues out of thin air and try to fix what ain’t broken (defund the police / build a border wall). Most Americans are right down the middle, just tryin to work hard and feed their families. That’s the point of this piece on Matt Damon. The left is continuously focusing on stupid celebrity issues and police shootings (which total 1000 per year) instead of issues that affect all Americans (Inadequate access to healthcare, food scarcity, clean water, safe good paying jobs, reasonably priced housing). We need to come together as a country and see each other as Americans, not see each other as our race/skin color.

Matt Damon was on the Hot Wings challenge on UA-cam and had such an honest answer to the question why doesn't hollywood make good movies anymore. He simply stated that streaming services killed DVD sales and without that 2nd wave of profits movies could count on, the studios are even less likely to take risks. It was a straightforward answer that made complete sense without blaming a pandemic.
Damon is wrong on that count. Films from original screenplays are being released in theaters and on streaming every year; that's fact, not opinion. Great films, whether original or adapted, are released every year by Hollywood yet many of them aren't being seen enough due to the minority of mass appeal blockbusters like the Marvel films. Original films deserve support and to not be stigmatized by labels like "Oscar bait", but cinema has always flourished and up to the present. Hollywood isn't dead.
Hollywood makes good movies. They will make good movies thirty years from now. People were saying the same rabble about the film industry in the 80's and 90's. There were people saying Hollywood wasn't 'making them like they used to' in the 60's.
Technology is wiped out many businesses and jobs or has diminished revenue of many as well. People have become hermits and socialization is at a all time low which hurts the cinemas. Crime is so high people feel unsafe in social situations with mass shootings.

His answer is exactly what OP said, and he specifically brings up Behind the Candelabra, which is a very niche audience and was still a $25M budget, but is only ever going to make like $5M maximum on box office, and so DVD was necessary for movies like that one in particular or something like Shawshank Redemption which flopped in theaters but is now considered top 10 all time. I am not in to celebrity gossip or Hollywood but I do instinctively like Matt Damon. Thank you for pointing out all of his charity work and furthermore asking his critics what charity work they have done. Hypocrisy should be called out as often as possible because people often don't even realize they are doing it.
And kudos to you for liking Matt Damon for his acting skills, without knowing that he does charity or whatever in his personal life. If journalists spend time on celebrities, it should be on their public activities, not their private lives.
Matt Damon has always seemed to me to be a thoughtful, caring person -- and he is a damn good actor. I've always enjoyed interviews with him because he has a really good sense of humor. Picking on him is like going for the popular, nice kid in class.

The truth feels so good to my ears these days. Thank u Bill!!
Yes it certainly releases good vibes to the brain.
I met Matt Damon, his kids go to my cousins school. He's a nice dude, seems chill and super respectful.

Top Gun was great and James Bond was truly awful: I went from stoked to see it and wanting to buy the entire Daniel Craig bond set when it came out to never ever ever giving the franchise a single penny as long as i live: Bond dose not give up and quit. And Q was always a perceptive genius. And M competent. Now they are all the opposite: Ded.
@@proof.17films For the record, OP did a shitty job saying what Damon was actually talking about. The question was more about why passion projects/slower dialogue heavy movies have taken a backseat to the gaudy, extravagant $100M+ movies, not that they don't exist.
It's not that good movies don't exist, it's that the majority of movies are very much copy-paste plotline cliches and stick the "hottest" name you can in the starring role, and you make profit regardless if the movie is good or not. But, I hate ppl saying there are no good movies out there when Parasite, Us, Midsommar, the Menu, Top Gun Mav,...etc came out in the last 3-5 years. Damon had to publicly 'dump' her so that everyone everywhere would know that it wasn't him being unable to commit or wanting to cheat/play the field, but instead she was getting dangerously close to criminal proceedings.
