Weird Video, but lots of videos were like this. This is at the beginning of the MTV Age, or as I call the 3rd British Invasion. When MTV first started off, the station brought in tons of British music via video. England at the time was the only major game in town producing music videos. Eventually, American bands began making music videos beyond live concert clips, but making videos were expensive and MTV hasn't proven themselves as a reliable moneymaker, especially when record sales were down. So, record companies produced CHEAP and experimental videos to get on the MTV market. What you are witnessing is the American counter-attack to the deluge of Britsh music. From 1980 - 1983 MTV would show some of the weirdest, cheapest music videos ever. I would pair this video with Herbie Handcock's "Rockit" (The Breakdancer's Holy Grail) ua-cam.com/video/GHhD4PD75zY/v-deo.html --Professor Thursday

Love "Stop Making Sense"! A real gem of a concert movie. Nicely concieved and executed and fun! Did I mention great music. Watch it in it's entirety for your own pleasure.
I'm a child of the 80s and this is my favorite Talking Heads song. So much so that it was played at my wedding reception. A great friend of mine and I danced to this. Wild, Wild Life is also a great song by them. An unknown (at that time) John Goodman is in the video. Die-Hard Walking Dead, too! I've seen every episode at least once.
Peter, I saw it on Broadway last December and it was the best, most engaging show I've seen. I had tickets to take my kids last month, but it's being rescheduled. You're right, there are lots of Talking Heads songs which I prefer over his solo work.
Saw the concert when they toured in 1984 (one of 4 times i saw them in concert). It was the most exciting concert performance I've ever seen. And then, the movie came out so I could relive it in eternity!
If I am not mistaken, this song was composed by the band by having the members write down pithy sayings of one or two sentences. They then took all of them threw them in a hat and pulled them out in no particular order and concocted this stream-of-consciousness lyric.
Yea,that was the basic concept for the entire "Speaking In Tongues" album. They illustrated this on the tour by having screens set up behind the band during "Making Flippy Floppy" and having 3 words appear on 3 different screens. Some kinda matched up,others not as much. Very few bands pushed as hard to recreate themselves from record to record and always strive for something totally original as much as Talking Heads did. One of my absolute favorite bands ever.
This Must Be the Place aka The Naive Melody is my all-time favorite song. I have listened to it for at least 2 decades at least once a week and have never grown tired of it.
All their tracks are amazing, and they all sound and look better in the live “Stop Making Sense” version. There’s so much more energy and more band members to add layers and funk. Please check it out. You will love it.
This is one of the first videos i can remember from being a kid. I can remember coming home from 1st grade in 83 and my grandma going youll never guess what we got. She sat me in front of the tv and turned on MTV! This is one of the ones I remember fondly from that time, one of my favorites.
"This must be the place (Naive Melody)" is another great tune. Not a banger but an awesome tune. Now if you could guess the popular movie it was played in. Their live concert “Stop Making Sense” is one of the all-time greatest concerts ever recorded. It’s even directed by academy award winning director Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs). The live version of the songs (to me) are preferred to the original recordings, especially since they are mastered.

Oh ya, Jamel, I absolutely knew “Burning Down The House” was before “The Roof Us On Fire”. I was in my mid teens when they both hit the airwaves & Mtv. Watching the live shows back then, you absolutely noticed the funk influence on Talking Heads. As soon as the music vid started, and in spite of my headache, I started moving in my chair. 😎
Need to check out "Stay Up Late" the production part in the end is really cool. I am a retired stage-hand, so I find it impressive and very cool that they included it as part of the video.

When my daughter was practically still a toddler, she used to sing along with this song: "Burning down the house - with MATCHES!" I was delighted to see Tina's bass on display at the R&R Hall of Fame, right where it belongs.
What Jamel is saying is that he recognizes the song because he heard it in an episode of "The Walking Dead." Like, at the end of Season One (Episode 6) the show concludes with Bob Dylan's masterpiece, "Tomorrow is a Long Time," and many people became familiar with that song because of "The Walking Dead."

Take a minute to concentrate
And she opens up her eyes
The world was moving she was right there with it and she was
The world was moving she was floating above it and she was
And she was
And she was drifting through the backyard
And she was taking off her dress
And she was moving very slowly
Rising up above the earth
Moving into the universe and she's
Drifting this way and that
Not touching the ground at all and she's
Up above the yard
The world was moving, she was right there with it and she was
(Hey, hey)
The world was moving, she was floating above it and she was
(Hey, hey, hey)
She was proud about it, no doubt about it
She isn't sure about what she's done
No time to think about what to tell him
No time to think about what she's done and she was
(Hey hey, hey hey, hey)
And she was looking at herself
And things were looking like a movie
She had a pleasant elevation
She's moving out in all directions oh, oh oh
That's mine too.

videos during the influential MTV days.Simply thought they were to weird. But were so good that they pulled it off.
Also check out their concert film
“ Stop Making Sense” . One of the greatest concert films ever made.
Most of the band met in art school. Go figure, eh?
Talking Heads were voted the most creative band of the 80's. Justified.
Road To Nowhere by Talking Heads please!
Good call.....I forgot how good that song is....
Pretty much anything from The Talking Heads
I forgot this song, then one night I was watching the last episode of Preacher showing him disappearing down the road, then the road to nowhere came on, it was a classic finish with that song.
Kinda like the life we’re living now. 😜
@@MysterySp0t Facts. 😆
Jamel _AKA_Jamal, you kind sir, are a ROCK STAR! When I find myself getting overwhelmed I watch a video of yours, preferably from the Grateful Dead! I'm not sure if you are as amazing in person as you are on this channel, but you sure seem to be sir. What a joy it is to experience music with you sir! Thanks a million.
FYI Bernie Worrell (Parliament Funkadelic) does the KB work.
They also did a lot of work with Adrien Belew (King Crimson)
I was a teen when all this great music happened and i still love it today!!! Still rockin at 52 years of age!!!
They are as legit a band as they come Jamel.
Along with Once In A Lifetime, this video got me connected with Talking Heads growing up in SE Arkansas. So grateful, love these guys! Thanks for the reaction!
This song is a staple for great DJs---LEGENDARY!
Bringing back some great childhood memories. Listen to the live version where he opens the song with “Who’s got a match?” Great F’ing song!!!
Talking Heads is still ahead of their time.
Need to check out "Stay Up Late" the production part in the end is really cool. I am a retired stage-hand, so I find it impressive and very cool that they included it as part of the video.
"This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)", please!
They wrote this song after going to a Parliament Funkadelic concert and it shows. Tina Weymouth's Bass work is EPIC!
Would love to see some reactions to Pixies. Trust me, you've heard at least one of their songs, Where is My Mind?
Crackity Jones
Levitate Me
Monkey Gone to Heaven
Gigantic
So many great songs in my opinion.
Another great Boston band. 💖
Pixies are pure and as raw as you can get. Driving vocals and stellar music. Winner! All damn day!
Bone Machine for the win.
So glad you did this song....it brings back FUN memories of the 80s for me!
Bands influenced by Talking Heads..

And of course the Band in my profile pic...Radiohead
In fact, the name Radiohead came from a Talking Heads song called “Radio Head”...Members from the band changed their name from “On a Friday” to “Radiohead”
Talking Heads and XTC toured together, I believe, when XTC were still performing live. Lucky, lucky people who were at those shows.
The Stop Making Sense album takes me back to a much better time in my life. Love your channel, and loved your Mama's Birthday video!
This whole album was amazing. Definitely in my top ten.
A big part of music in movies and even video games are from the 60's to the 90's area that's what's makes classic rock so respectful , got to love it.
That’s hilarious because when I saw you did it my first thought was they just did this song on the walking dead finale
Remember, the Tubes playing the Santa Cruz Broadwalk all the time in the late 80’s. Great memories of dancing on the beach.
This must be the place - Talking heads
My favorite! Yes, please.
And then the Postmodern jukebox cover.
J, you'll love their "Girlfriend Is Better" and "Life During Wartime"
I know. Ive suggested "Solsbury Hill" but haven't gotten any traction.
Gotta do the live version of Life During Wartime, from Stop Making Sense.
My wife and I will be happy dancing to "This must be the place" when we move into our new house in January. Keep up the great work!
Try Talking Heads version of the Rev. Al Green's "Take Me to the River." Talk about a mash-up!
FABULOUS!
When my daughter was practically still a toddler, she used to sing along with this song: "Burning down the house - with MATCHES!"
I was delighted to see Tina's bass on display at the R&R Hall of Fame, right where it belongs.
dude this is more than 30 years pre-Walking Dead.
It was just in the season finale last week.
@Nature and Physics how the fuck can a music act be better than a television program? Whats next... peanut butter is better than penguins??? 2 totally differt things.
I hope you guys understand the joke Walking Dead made - Literal heads on sticks talking during last season
So glad this band made it past the big record company hurdle back in the day. Music that's not so much timeless, but time defying. Doesn't fit into a genre or era - always unique.
Thank you for keeping good music alive too! Luv the Talking Heads!
Next, Talking Heads "Take Me To The River"! This is the singing fish song!
The drop at the beginning and the DRUMS my guy the DAMN DRUMS!!!!
Remain in Light album is amazing. Not their popular stuff, but just an insane listen.
one of my faves by this band. Such an original sound that is incomparable! thx for sharing Jamel!
You should check out some live performances of the Talking Heads. They have a live movie Stop Making Sense. But there are lots of great performances out there.
The version of Naive Melody (This Must Be The Place) from their live album/movie Stop Making Sense is my favorite piece of recorded music. The band is at their prime but also includes members of Parliament/Funkadelic. It's just... beautiful.
Check out "Genius of Love" by Tom Tom Club. Drummer and bass player of Talking Heads other group. Good stuff. You'd like it 😊
My dad's favorite band, when I was a kid he always played them in the car! My personal favorites are :
Dream Operator
City of Dreams
Nothing but Flowers
Heaven
Girlfriend is Better
Keep it up brother! More Talking Heads!
“Life during wartime” is a real banger, listen to the Stop Making Sense version.
Grew up listening to talking heads. There is a recorded concert called, "Stop Making Sense". Sooooooo good
