Catching shad with a cast net is one of the best ways to catch shad, but it can be tricky, especially during the late winter/early spring. In this video I use my Humminbird side imaging and down imaging sonar to locate schools of shad in Occoquan reservoir, Virginia. I mark the spot and then get my cast net ready.
The trick to freezing shad so they stay fresh is too freeze them as quickly as possible as fresh as possible. If you freeze them slowly the meat will be soft and mushy when it thaws. Freezing them while they are still very fresh also helps a lot too.
