  • Chapter 8 recapping my unexpected Autism and ADHD year: this week I focus on letting in a new sense of relief, validation and optimism after the initial shock of realising that you've been neurodivergent all along.
Our brains process information differently to neurotypical brains, creating unique perspectives and modes of thinking. We constantly make new links between things because we find it harder to form cognitive shortcuts between items of information, and that’s both a blessing and a curse. Re-making and forming new neural connections between disparate bits of information all the time is exhausting for our brains - BUT it can lead to spotting gaps or opportunities or noticing details and connections that others might miss, and that’s the trade-off. That's where the light gets in.

I am happy that you have thoroughly explored your own mind palace and produce such clear information!

I looove that's song Anthem. The crack is how the light gets in. Yes! And out. 😄
I found out I was on the spectrum when I was 61. What a relief! And to find out that I'm not the only one with a strange mind is wonderful. It's been only positive for me.
I like your videos. Easy to follow and relate to. 😊👍👍

I love that you quoted this verse from Leonard Cohen! The crack where the light gets in, doesn't create a situation of a less-than-perfect person or life. Leonard's lyric is challenging us to examine how we define perfection. It's not frozen and unmoving and static. Having that crack creates so many more opportunities for experiencing complexity and richness, that perfection wouldn't allow.

“Honestly, whatever is going on in your noodle is the *opposite* of ‘imposter.’ It’s genuine, authentic and legitimate, and deserves to be seen and heard - to help create something more positive and optimistic in the world.”

I very rarely go to the trouble to sign in to UA-cam just to like and subscribe. This insight and your other videos have made it worthwhile. I just wanted to reach out and encourage you to keep this up because if your intention was to help other people struggling through this fog, it is working. Thank you Struan.

Cohen's Anthem is one of my favorite songs. I've been going through your entire series in order, and I just want to say thank you. I'm 52 years old, and I'm about a year into finding out I'm likely autistic. And just recently I've been diagnosed with ADHD as well. I don't know at this late date in life whether to feel like I've been punched in the face or relieved to know that my struggles have been for a reason. Nearly everything you've said has matched my own process so far. It's really validating to hear you talk about it, and it helps quell the imposter syndrome that still rears its head really frequently. I so appreciate the work you're doing in documenting your process and explaining all the stages and traits of neurodivergence.

Thanks for your lovely comment, and I'm really glad these videos have helped with the journey. I know what you mean about the punch in the face vs. relief with a late diagnosis - I struggled with that; I think it's ultimately a bit of both and that's ok.

I love how you celebrate and re frame our interesting facets and champion neurodivergent creativity and insights...the world will be much better as we come out to share these ideas and ways of solving.

Thanks! I'm trying to do my bit to help reframe the narrative. I feel like it's going to take a big team effort, and sadly we're not great at teams!!

This rant was quite beautiful my friend. I'm 41 and just figured out that I'm autistic a few weeks ago. I have decades worth of creative material, mostly music, that I've let very few people see. Probably I sub-consciously didn't want to show anyone art that might betray my mask(s). I suppose it's time to let the freak flag fly.
Thank you for your perspective, you have a new sub.

Thank you, I really appreciate that. I really look forward to hopefully hearing from you again if you do decide to put some of your material out into the world! Good luck, the worst that will happen is it will sit there and be ignored, but it will at least be out there and maybe people will come to it, immediately, in a month, in a year, in a decade. But you'll have put it out there and shared the fantastic things inside you. I hugely encourage it and send you strength to push against and expand the invisible neurodivergent bubble that holds so many of us back from putting ourselves out there!

Yes Dean! Fly that freak flag baby! The world wants to see what you have created, that's why It created You.

PLEA: does anyone better at UA-cam than me know how I can overlay an image onto this video? I wanted to overlay an image briefly from around 10:22-10:42 but UA-cam Studio won't let me do it, and the ONLY thing Google suggests is some website called Veed.Io who DOESN'T recognise the link to this video when I try to use it. I want to scream. It's right messing with my Low Frustration Tolerance, I can tell you... Any and all advice on how to overlay an image onto a video would be hugely appreciated! Thank you!
