YAY! Jared's retrospective on Silent Hill is finally happening!!!!!!!! I jumped on this right when I got the notification. A huge project you could do is playthrough all the Silent Hill games and show all the endings in each game.
"Tears of..." is and always will be my favorite track from Akira Yamaoka, along with being my favorite song of all time. @@user-jn1wm3tb8v that's because you have different values, but it's great that instead of being open minded, you stand in judgement against a country you know nothing about.
@@user-jn1wm3tb8v i don't know, unlike you, i don't know what culture you're referring to, or what you consider a child. Some places allow 16 year olds to marry, which is still considered a child in the west, yet your 'perfect culture' has teenage pregnancies because you dont' teach about how to abstain or any information in regards to how it can harm a person's life. It's also funny that you mention that as there are numerous examples of children being taken to sexual fairs in the name of 'gay rights' where there are naked people paraded in front of children that I'm sure you support, but certain things in other cultures bother you.
What? The game is already 20 years old. It’s been old enough to drink for at least 2 years. Oh wait... yeah... ‘murica.... where you’re treated like a child until you’re 21.
Back when they were still printing gaming magazines like EGM and PSM, I remember they did early coverage of Silent Hill before it came out. This was back in 1998 when RE2 was recently released. One of the names they gave it was the "Resident Evil Killer" and it sent a chill down my spine. The game finally released and ACTUALLY did send chills down my spine with that intro.
You having that blooper (Yes, smiled out loud at that point) made me remember how this game had its own pre rendered blooper reel that you got to see after completing the game. As if was just a movie or play and don't lose your sleep over it. I thought it was a very cool detail from the devs to add.
Plus, the facial movement was so damn precise in that cutscene. They didn't even use mocap. Sato literally just animated every frame to the best of his ability and it came out looking amazing!
@@AvalancheReviews Animation, facial or other movements were very life like. Some other stuff from that same era looked like semi crippled robots trying to mimic humans but this sort of medium was still in its infancy in the late 90's so I give most of them a pass and I can enjoy them nevertheless.
So, I finally played this game, & a few things: - Absolutely blown away with how straight up FUN this game is. The exploration, the puzzles, holy crap it was so much fun! & the map system is perfect - the story is very clear & concise, why would anyone think they burned Alessa on purpose, or anything like that? I explored every nook & cranny, found all of the files & collectables, & I felt like all of the puzzle pieces were there for me to find & piece together. - you're totally right about not being able to choose between SH or RE. this is one of if not THE most fun video games I have ever played, & after getting a ways through SH2 & knowing already all of the story beats, I still think SH1 is more fun. Not better, just more fun. I absolutely cannot wait to play SH3 & its all thanks to Jared & his SH Retrospective finally convincing me to play these awesome classics

*Brilliant review, sir! Thank you for this!* I remeber the very first time i played this game. The summer between my 8th and 9th grade years (2000). Looking back it almost seems like a magic summer. I traded in my n64 to get a ps1 and that summer i played re2 re3 and this. What a great memory.
My biggest problem with most Silent Hill related content and discussion is, indeed, the way theories and speculation have crept into it. Thank you for taking the time to keep things completely objective. Very nice video as usual.
I've seen retrospectives but yours are true passion projects. I got brought to your channel by the Resident Evil Retrospectives and now I'm a huge fan. The difference between a good retrospective and a bad one is the person's passion for what series they are taking a look at and I can just hear the passion as you describe the games you explain. Keep up the amazing work Avalanche.
I dunno why but i will always come back to this video, something about how you talk about this game and this series is genuinely soothing to me, both your Resident Evil and Silent Hill playlists have become my go to load something to listen to in the background, or if i'm just doing stuff in a game save file i don't need to record i'll just fire up either playlist on my phone and i get lost in the videos.
Love this game, still my favorite Silent Hill the intro with the alleyway will forever be ingrained to me as one of the best intros to a horror game with those sirens terrifying me as a kid. The atmosphere of this game remained nearly unmatched and the plight of Alessa & Lisa were sad but great in adding to the dread. Plus 2nd best protagonist & antagonist in the series with Harry's admirable and relatable strive to find his daughter & Dahlia's torture of Alessa imo. I just wish Konami re-released this game on something to make it more easily accessible for the public but alas.
That opening music... Chris' theme in RE5 always reminded me of it. Listening to them back to back, they aren't that similar, but something in my brain insists on linking them.
Silent Hill 1 built a strong, sturdy foundation. Silent Hill 2 constructed an absolutely beautiful home upon that foundation. Silent Hill 3 squatted in that lovely home. Silent Hill 4 knocked it down and put up an apartment building. I look forward to your thoughts on the series.
Oh boy, I remember that day I took home the official PlayStation magazine with RE3 on the cover and it’s demo disc. Bruce Willis in an action game? (Apocalypse) Silent hill? What’s that? Little did I know that would change my whole perspective of horror in games and become one of the most fondest memories of my childhood. Keep up the good work!
sneke989 Do you remember what else was on the demo disc? The Silent Hill demo disc I had came boxed with Tekken 2 I think, and it terrified me as a child 😭
Silent hill made me get into horror. Before playing Silent hill 2(hd collection unfortunately, got the good versions later) I didnt understand what horror could be. I thought its just for scaring you and its very superfical. But when I got into Silent hill, oh boy...Whole new world opened up to me. I've been obsessed with it ever since. Deep, metaphorical and most importantly, subtle. No horror game to this day has matched the originals. Its a shame this video series will get more and more depressing with each video. With an exceptionally painful ending.
What did they do with the HD collection to screw it up? I almost bought it on Xbox One because I don't want to take out my PS2 but the ratings and comments were atrocious
First of all, can I give you a medal for leaving the whole "Seductive cult" outtake in the review? Secondly, on the whole subject of dithering and resolution... for me, I LOVE it, stuff like that, and having the "veil" lifted as you said, is like getting up close to a classical work of art and examining the exact brush strokes
Yesss been waiting for this! I don't comment much but I wanted to say that I love you're content. I watch every video you upload and I've also watched the RE retrospective a cupple times lol. Keep up the amazing work dude
The way you describe using the map and developing that skill in real life alongside the game is spot on my experience. I was learning to read maps on Mapquest around the same time I was using the SH maps and they really parallel in my memory.
Good Narration, good delivery... A+ bro. love this vid!. It helped remind me why I got into the games industry in the first place. Here's my Silent Hill experience story... I was a freshman at college when the game came first came out. Where I'm from, there used to be these... "gaming shops" where they rented out playstation 1's and super nintendo's by the hour. So when SH first came out - the day it became available in these shops, there was a Typhoon (a light one) so people went about their day normally, I went to School, but around 2 hours into the day, the typhoon intensified, and students and employees were asked to go home... Instead of going home I went to a game shop located near my University. I was like 1 of 3 customers, It was freaking dark, the lights were flickering, and I kid you not, I sat by the window, where I could hear the typhoon ravaging outside. Tree branches falling, garbage and junk being blown in the street, and a light fog. This was happening as I played the game for the first time. This was the pseudo pre - mobile phone era, so my folks let me have it for disappearing for a few hours amidst a raging Typhoon. Worth it...
Love the game, thanks for the review. One of my dream titles to get the RE2 remake treatment. I have PS1 original copy where Doug Bradley (actor who played Pinhead in Hellraiser) signed my instruction manual
Wow great video. Thank you so much for this. Silent Hill 1-4 are some of my most cherished gaming memories. I bought this game back in 1999 when it came out and it blew me away. It's hard for me to pick a favorite between 1-3.....but I'd say the first one is the scariest. It is a MUST to play these games with headphones and in the dark.
That ‘seductive’ bit started off my day right haha! Phenomenal video that will most likely make me try these games again. I’ve owned them but never beaten one of them.
I would like to express great gratitude for your work. I sometimes watch your videos as if its a movie tucked in bed and sleepin g peacefully afterwards. I think Ive watched all silent hills videos and went on to watch the extended 4 hour cut :)
I really appreciated you leaving that little blooper in at the beginning. It was a good laugh during a breakdown of a very serious game. I just found your channel and that made me subscribe.
I think that the explanation behind tank controls is even simpler than that. When 3D games came to the scene, we needed movement in 360 degrees which is IMPOSSIBLE in a dpad, there you only have 8 directions, so... tank controls is a way to allow all directions, since you gradually choose your angle of movement with the left and right arrows. What many people like to forget is that... the original controllers of the ps1 didn't have anlog sticks, making games that only work with analog would alienate early adopters, potentially decreasing the sales of the game. N64 didn't have that problem, thats the reason ocarina of time doesn't have tank controls while megaman legends do, despite being very similiar in genre. Also yeah, i agree that tank controls are the best with fixed camera angles, which themselves are very good for horror. And also what most people don't realise is that every modern FPS essentially operates with tank controls, with the only differences being that the gradual rotation of the character is maped to the second stick. Making FPS more similar in movement to Resident evil than to mario 64. So... i don't understand why people hate so much on tank controls
I don't think modern FPS games have tank controls. What defines tank controls is that you can only move backwards or forward, and turning needs to be done by pivot. Modern FPS allow you to move in any direction even without changing which direction the character is facing. You can walk left. right, diagonal, whichever way you want.
I've been watching you for almost 3 years. You are in my top 5 youtubers ever. What a great video. Yeah I'm mildly intoxicated and never comment. Im just upset you dont have more subscribers. Pissed off at the youtube algorithm right now. Jared, you are awesome.
Agreed! Silent Hill has change my life since my childhood and the way I see stuff around me. Also has inspired me to try and create a game so intriguing like this game.
@Davide Lombardo Silent Hill could use it. The only reason I haven't played it is because of how damn clunky it is. RE2 is great because its in the spirit of the original but feels fresh. It was one of the standouts of 2019 despite being "just a remake." Remakes can be good when they are done well.
@Davide Lombardo The RE2 remake would stand on its own if it was a new IP with the same gameplay. In this landscape, it is a new and better game. It just has the brand on it so it can sell. The kinds of remakes that bring something new to the table are just as valuable as new IP.
Man, one thing I only really considered on my most recent playthrough is those pre-rendered scenes the game shows when Harry is looking at something. It's hard to explain, but it adds an element of horror by placing you in this uncanny mirror of the polygons you were just exploring. The rubber ball puzzle at 22:34 is a good example, it seems like such an arbitrary moment to have a pre-rendered scene for. And the way that only the center of the frame is illuminated gives me the impression that a camera flash is going off in a dark room, like some Blair Witch shit. Idk I might be overthinking it, but such a minor thing always adds to atmosphere when you're skulking around, solving puzzles in the creepy interiors.
No, I totally get that. You are used to seeing the environment in a certain way, then they give you this even lower res version of it. I think there might just be something about dark, low res images that hots the brain’s fear centers just right. Every creepy pasta has one and they just….I don’t know. They can get to you.
Yes! I was hoping this will one day show up on my UA-cam feed. Now a glass of whisky and some vanilla candles to enjoy a retro trek through the bizarre and macabre.

Ha! Given Konami's current state, you might as well be MAKING your own Silent Hill game.
I need more Silent Hill in my life.
Love that little blooper in there. "Seductive cult." Love that you left that little blooper in there. I was also like, "I hear Jo, too!!"

As a long time fan of the franchise, this just might be the most nuanced review involving the philosophy of Silent Hill's storytelling and setting I've ever come across. It reminded me of why I hold this series close to my heart and why Silent Hill 1 is my favorite entry. Kudos.
YAY! Jared's retrospective on Silent Hill is finally happening!!!!!!!! I jumped on this right when I got the notification.
A huge project you could do is playthrough all the Silent Hill games and show all the endings in each game.
"Dont go to sleep listening to this soundtrack" pffft
"Tears of..." is and always will be my favorite track from Akira Yamaoka, along with being my favorite song of all time. The way it sounds as if the music itself is crying fits indescribably with the good ending and all of the context in regards to Allessa. Still one of the few songs that can make my eyes flood
“ Silent hill is nearly old enough to drive a car” actually it’s old enough to drink
@@NowhereBeats Lots of dads are horrible people.
@@NowhereBeats Yeah I understand some dads doing it. But it just rubs me the wrong way to make your child supply you with alcohol.
@@user-jn1wm3tb8v that's because you have different values, but it's great that instead of being open minded, you stand in judgement against a country you know nothing about.
@@Bjorick So can child marriage be excused?
@@user-jn1wm3tb8v i don't know, unlike you, i don't know what culture you're referring to, or what you consider a child. Some places allow 16 year olds to marry, which is still considered a child in the west, yet your 'perfect culture' has teenage pregnancies because you dont' teach about how to abstain or any information in regards to how it can harm a person's life.
It's also funny that you mention that as there are numerous examples of children being taken to sexual fairs in the name of 'gay rights' where there are naked people paraded in front of children that I'm sure you support, but certain things in other cultures bother you.
> old enough to drive a car
BRUH. This game’s near old enough to buy alcohol!

Didn't kill RE though.
Wow. I used to love PSM
@@steelbear2063 the film franchise did
Man...I miss getting PSM magazine 😬
It made the game a little less scary to me and easier to replay.
I feel like I’ve seen and know everything about SH, but when AR puts out a video, I watch that video!
Phillip Redding same here!
So, I finally played this game, & a few things:
- Absolutely blown away with how straight up FUN this game is. The exploration, the puzzles, holy crap it was so much fun! & the map system is perfect
- the story is very clear & concise, why would anyone think they burned Alessa on purpose, or anything like that? I explored every nook & cranny, found all of the files & collectables, & I felt like all of the puzzle pieces were there for me to find & piece together.
- you're totally right about not being able to choose between SH or RE. this is one of if not THE most fun video games I have ever played, & after getting a ways through SH2 & knowing already all of the story beats, I still think SH1 is more fun. Not better, just more fun. I absolutely cannot wait to play SH3 & its all thanks to Jared & his SH Retrospective finally convincing me to play these awesome classics
I would totally agree. SH1 is a much more fun playthrough than 2.
Man this is a great start to the retrospective. You nailed everything here imo
I hope I can keep the series at this level of quality. This one really felt satisfying to put together.
I'm telling you, man. This is my favorite UA-cam channel. Hands down. I recommend it to everyone that has even a passing interest in survival horror. Please never stop making videos, ever. Your attention to detail, wealth of knowledge, and personality that seems to mirror my own all make for an instant "click" with every new upload.
Cheers, bro. 🍻
*Brilliant review, sir! Thank you for this!*
I remeber the very first time i played this game.
26:00 Oh shit, Jared is going all Digital Foundry on us.
David Leduc I totally agree. The old school Gametrailers retrospectives were awesome, but I think I prefer this more ‘Personal’ style of retrospective
Holy shit! It is happening! Dude, this is the hypest notification I've ever received from YT.
*Glues eyes to screen and puts on headphones* YES!!! Been waiting for this!
Hell yeah! This has been one of my most requested series to cover. Glad to finally be diving in.
Which theme?
Silent Hill 1 built a strong, sturdy foundation. Silent Hill 2 constructed an absolutely beautiful home upon that foundation. Silent Hill 3 squatted in that lovely home. Silent Hill 4 knocked it down and put up an apartment building.
I look forward to your thoughts on the series.
Then came the Downcoming!
4 is my favorite.
And after all that,Silent Hill downpour become the final nail in the coffin. It's sad to see this great series burn to ash and flowing into the wind.
@@Casketkrusher_ Hell yeah, I loved me some SH 4.

Unfortunately I’m not sure and the case I had the disc in is M.I.A (only found my copy of galerians but that’s a whole other story lol).
sneke989 Ah! I’m interested. I never lost any Ps1 games. And I have briefly played Galerians. It was good fun from what I remember but hard
Absolutely awesome! Thank you for doing this and please cover the rest.
Leaving in that outtake was a great touch, dude! Excellent work with the video.
that seductive cult part had me dying i appreciate that you left it there laughed through it
Yes, this is glorious! Thank you for reliving SH with us.
Anytime!!!
I never got into Silent Hill the way I did with the Resident Evil series. Your video has definitely intrigued me to give it a try 👍🏻.
Every second of this thorough analysis makes me want to start up SH again, even while nearing the happy holidays.
You glorious bastard, Silent Hill! i'm in for the technical journey, as always!
FINALLY 🤯 I KNEW it! Ur doing it, I'm loving it. Thanks, man 🤙
Sooo happy you’re doing this series!!

This was great as always. So happy to see Silent Hill getting the retrospective treatment.

Very nice retrospective. Stellar work as Always. Looking Forward to you Talking About the masterpiece that is SH2.
I don't remember Tenchu being like that. Nice retrospective as always. o/
Your review was stellar and painstakingly researched. I like this particular style you’ve put together.
Sign me up for that seductive cult! 😁
Ha! You're in
Wow great video.
I first played Silent Hill when I was 4. I was absolutely captivated, such an amazing game.
I really appreciated you leaving that little blooper in at the beginning. It was a good laugh during a breakdown of a very serious game. I just found your channel and that made me subscribe.
The mad man doesnt stop! Spootober here we go
love the retrospectives and your voice i can just listen to and enjoy
That 'seductive' bit made my day. :D
Great review. Wish there was an easy way to play this classic.
Out of the original trilogy, I think this one had the best gameplay. From the exploration, level design, puzzles.
I love the "fog" of ps1 and N64 games. Even games where it wasnt meant to be scary it seemed scary like in the original tomb raider games
It has a certain vibe that is unique to that fog.
That butler in Tomb Raider 3 scared the hell out of me, so I always locked him up in the freezer
Agreed! Silent Hill has change my life since my childhood and the way I see stuff around me. Also has inspired me to try and create a game so intriguing like this game.
Why can’t we get a re2 remake type of plan for this game? You know how amazing that would be?
I always thought about it since the beginning of the "remastered" trend. The 3 games being remade would great.
Why? Konami is why
I’m gonna binge watch all these bangers on this amazing series. 🍿👏
Do it!
I know what I'm going to be listening to while I'm slinging boxes at UPS today.
Everyone covers SH, and whilst I'm always happy to go back I wish more people would cover the Siren series.
EDIT: That Clue interlude was perfect.
I always try to fit a clue scene into my videos
What an incredible video, please keep them coming, regards and love from Mexico!
