Nice review. I'm 25 years in law enforcement and I can tell you, those two women in this movie absolutely exist personality wise. You work with and meet all types.
Such a terrific small budget film. Shocking moments and suspense with action throughout. John Carpenter was at his best early here. Thanks for the video!
Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) is once again, not one of my favorite Carpenter films but it is a pretty good 70s movie that works in favor of it's tension and it's simplicity.
Can't wait for your review of Starman. Shocking that my favorite John Carpenter movie is Starman. Not Halloween 1978. I watched Starman for the first time 2 years ago. I was shocked that how much I enjoyed that film. Rewatched beginning of this year. And I was just floored how much I love that movie. Great characters, great performances, great story, and a great score.
Starman is my favorite 1980s Carpenter film, but I do prefer Precinct 13 and Halloween. It's unfortunate that Starman seems to get overlooked nowadays, despite being highly praised upon release. The film is a great display of Carpenter's range.
I just watched Starman a few weeks ago and had never heard about it before...it was so good. It was refreshing seeing aliens who aren't here to cause all kinds of chaos like we always see in movies...and the effects were so well done they don't look dated at all.
I just watched Starman a few weeks ago and had never heard about it before...it was so good. It was refreshing seeing aliens who aren't here to cause all kinds of chaos like we always see in movies...and the effects were so well done they don't look dated at all.
I prefer the realism of the gang portrayal here. The kid getting shot was a massive eye opener for me. It was like "What the he'll am I in for?" The remake is fun, but very Hollywood. Not quite as good.
I LOVE this movie. Assault On Precinct 13 and The Fog are my favourite Carpenter movies, and to me... they're his creepiest. The MOOD of this just sets you on edge... For the women - 2 of my brothers, my sister, one of my uncles, and my partner arew all (retired) LEOs and say that both the females are types they dealt with all the time. As a combat wounded veteran... the villains in this are FAR more realistic than the remake, which is why when I saw this again as an adult (and having been wounded in combat more than once) I STILL find this to be very creepy. The Red Army did all-out assaults, but generally you're just going to get small groups coming at you (they're all hoping the first groups are the ones who make the target run out of ammo, or find out where the weak points are LOL) From my experience, LEOs and combat vets consider THIS to be the best version (we have movie nights so yes, we've discussed this one). Anyhow... thanks for reminding me about this awesome film, it bears a re-watch!
Shame you saw the remake first @Cody Leach but least you liked this version too. It is his first film to me that showed glimpses of the amazing director he would come to be. Fun watch thank you very much for this series. Will be a very fun watch
Never thought of that, the old classic Western siege angle! It's like the Clint Eastwood and Magnificent 7 and Gunfight at OK Corral gunfights - bloody, noisy and chaotic. Also, the 'bad guys' always have a need to terrorize their victims! Thank you, well now I 'know' what this movie was actually about:)
Love this film! Carpenter definitely took some inspiration from older western movies of the 50's and 60's. Napoleon Wilson even has some lines that could have come straight from Once Upon A Time In The West; they mirror some of Charles Bronson's Harmonica character actually. The whole cast is great and this one is yet another underrated Carpenter piece IMO.
@@CodyLeachYT I always wondered why they didn't just storm the building too but I'll let that one go. Maybe the gang didn't know how many people were inside the station or something. I also watched the remake first.
Thanks for covering this amazing film. I couldn't be happier seeing as most people only know of the remake and have no idea that it is. I admit I saw the remake first and I enjoyed it. A few years later I was flipping threw the channels and I saw the original on TCM and I couldn't resist. You also had wonderful opinions on both btw.
I REALLY need to see the remake to "Assault on Precinct 13" one of these days. That said, I had the chance to stream the original and had an action-packed time. Liked the chemistry of our mains and wanted to see Bishop and Napoleon make it out alive. Highly recommended.
This movie is dope, might be my fav Carpenter after The Thing. Love the music too. Although the little girl getting shot is kinda absurdly funny, it's so brutal.
It's Kim Richards from the Disney movies,Ecscape to Witch Mountain, sequels etc. Then she did those horrible house wives shows on reality TV,where she turned into a real hot mess
Watched the film a while ago & I thought it was great. Pretty much in agreement on a lot of what you said. The well done exploration of the concept, notably in terms of narrative. The score gave it a unique tone. I admired the slow burn in the first half as the tension was maximized to where by the time that ice cream truck scene happened, you knew s**t was gonna hit the fan. I agree with your criticisms with the performances of the two female characters in terms of being on different spectrums of performance (over acting & under acting). I think an example of the latter came in that scene where she was shot in the arm. Initially I thought Carpenter did a bad job communicating that she was shot through the directing & editing but afterwards it made more sense that the actress under sold it. Also, what was up with the character not doing anything when that gang member approached her with the gun? Anyways, last point is the complaint about the numbers of the gang members. I agree that if they were going to show how many were within the vicinity, why didn't they establish a scope in terms of danger level with them? Example being had they established that 25 were there, then you'd know how vast or dire the scenario is. I guess the one way you could forgive the idea that very few attacked the building despite the numbers being on the gang's side is, maybe a select number were tasked by the war lords to enter while (established afterwards) others were tasked to remove any evidence that a shootout took place & several others (like the one in the car later) would stake out to ensure no one interfered in their mission. I could be talking nonsense but that's just something that came to mind.
Awesome review of a awesome, I enjoyed this film its tense & suspenseful, completely agree with you about the ending it would've been nice seen the explosion.
For me Carpenters second best movie behind halloween. Personally this is one of my top 5 fav films ever behind Halloween, Dawn Dead 78, Predator and T1 this is such an underated gem of a movie.
This movie is certainly a rollercoaster and for a theatrical debut is certainly top notch. However, my favorite of his films is a toss up between big trouble and they live.
One of the few cases where I haven't seen the remake to this day though I really like the original and have watched it quite often. So your review reminded me of gving the new version also a watch. :)
Overall good review, but you just can't bag on Laurie Zimmer and get away with it! Leigh was the perfect woman; true, she takes things in stride, but she does have numerous scenes of emotional struggle. She is not comfortable shooting people, and her conversations with Napoleon shows her vulnerabilities. And she is smoking hot.
i prefer the original to the remake, just feels more like a horror/thriller rather than an action film, maybe cause i was super young when i seen this, then watched the remake. Anyways awesome review cody xx
John Carpenter is a master of maximizing a low budget. Just a master in general. I love the way he chose to shoot the faceless gang members by never lingering on their characteristics and keeping them in low light.
It didn't take me out of the movie to see the undisciplined nature of the assault. They're not a coordinated military opposing force but a wild group of criminals that just lost their head mofo. Also Carpenter had something like 1% of the remakes budget. The fact that it's not a steaming pile proves to me the incredible resourcefulness and talent of Carpenter.
Like someone said in the comments section of the upload I saw on UA-cam, they are kind of like mindless zombies. The film is sort of a grand guignol horror.
The baddies do act pretty dumb. You don't have to be a well drilled military unit to not just run in like a headless chicken. Its actually laughable how ridiculous the assault is
Fantastic Review Cody. The only thing I disagree with is your take on the villains. I love the zombie like qualities of the gang. You’re right though it’s probably because you saw the remake first which I haven’t seen yet. Can’t wait to check it out
Best scene in this movie is scene with silencers when we only hear breaking of glass on windows and papers are flying in the air. It is anthology scene.
It's still my favorite Carpenter movie. The score and cast are superb. The little girl was a big Disney star that's why he killed her of.The censors told him to remove the scene but he put it back in.I first saw it in 1976 when the movie was released. The remake is above average but nothing special.
If you didn't give Assault On Precinct 13 go out and buy it i would unsubscribe. 😛 Here in Europe it is mostly considered in top 3 Carpenter movies right after The Thing and Halloween. For some reason people in USA rarely mention Assault On Precinct 13 when they are talking about best Carpenter movies. 🙂
I thought that there was a good contrast between the 2 Women, that worked well - one being the cowering whining one the other being the cooler under pressure one. My only real critisisms being the pace could have been quicker it's a slow lead in & everything is too quiet too often, it could have used more incidental music. BUT ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 is a clever original very atmospheric thriller film, proving what can be done with a lower budget having to improvise, as to the gangs I think the threat was that they were big on action small on words, the threat being never knowing their intentions, Clint Eastwood style, as were our hero characters to some extent

I love this one. It's essentially the first Carpenter movie where he really found his style. Dark Star felt more Dan O'Bannon to me.
Yeah, Dan O'Bannon added the whole beach ball alien subplot.
I absolutely love this movie, but I haven’t watched it in quite a while and now that I’ve been reminded of this I think I’ll go and rewatch it.
