The Ward (2010) - Movie Review
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 чер 2024
- As of now, John Carpenter's final film is The Ward. If anyone else had directed this, it would be passably mediocre. As the final Carpenter film, it's depressingly dull and derivative.

The only redeeming factor about this movie is that John Carpenter predicted that Amber Heard belonged in a psych ward years before we found out she was crazy😂
Don't forget John Carpenter's two episodes on Masters of Horror...
Got this on DVD looking for a cheap low budget horror movie. Didn't realize it was Carpenter til the credits lol
It is an awful final film for any director especially John Carpenter
There has been a rumor that has circulated about “The Ward” from crew members behind the scenes.
The majority of the movie was really directed by the film’s writers, Michael and Shawn Rasmussen, with Carpenter spending more time in his trailer playing video games than actually “directing”.
That's the truth.
I believe that lol
This makes it all make sense.
Yeah, one thing I noticed with a lot of directors is that they loose their style as they get older. I love it when their style evolves such with Martin Scorsese and George Miller, but a lot of other directors aren't as fortunate.
Yeaaaa but when u good a bad motherfucker like Jhon carpenter ? I can forgive his shitty movies , he's made too many good ones for me to see him.in the bad light 😂
The Ward (2010) is bland, obnoxious at many points visually with not great performances, and the manner in which it tackles traumatic responses and the harmful old school therapy methods is clumsy, ham fisted and uninspired.
And the twist at the end is absolutely predictable.
Kinda sad that this was John Carpenters last movie.
That lobotomy death scene freaked me out. My bugaboo is brain surgery and extreme head trauma (decapitations and headshots are fine, but like stuff in Hereditary and such are what I mean), so that scene got under my skin a bit
All the more reason John Carpenter should do Dead Space. Go out on a banger adaptation
He did. It's called The Thing, unfortunately. Because I would love Dead Space. The fact he keeps saying he wants to do it and it hasn't happened is tragic. Same with Del Toro with Mountains of Madness
@@journeyofsound397 del Toros would have been goddamn amazing
What a beautiful series you have created Cody, I’m so proud that you finally got to complete it! Amazing journey!!! Can’t wait for your John Carpenter Ranking!!!
We’re getting spoiled with how many of these John Carpenter reviews we’ve gotten in the seven days. I’m not complaining though.
It’s been a long journey, but we did it.
Cody did it. We just watched 🤣
@@zachsmith1634 touché
After watching this review…. I’m 99.99% sure this is going to be last place in the ranking… I’m 100% sure The Thing is going to be first place
Yes for sure. I figure Halloween may be #2 or #3, close with Vampires
Being at a hospital at night creeps me out.
Honestly there’s still so many people around and brightly lit so it’s not that scary in my experience. The price after your stay is what haunts me from never going to a hospital!
@@Expo- At least the TV and my phone kept me company.
Can't wait for your ranking! If you want another director to go through, may I recommend Tobe Hooper?
This Carpenter ranking is going to be fun.
Yes please do a review of IDENTITY. Great movie. I saw it in theaters. One of the most unnerving theater experiences ever. That constant rain pouring sound for almost 2 hours really gave me a disoriented feeling. Such a great movie.
I remember having an entertainment weekly subscription at the time and they mentioned it was out and I remember thinking it was both weird as hell that I hadn’t heard anything about John Carpenter coming back and that someone as hot as Amber Heard wasn’t a bigger deal.
I remember watching this and thinking "Did John Carpenter just straight up rip off Identity, only shittily and against his will like he was held at gunpoint?"
Now, and I I don't wanna make you do homework but, a top 10 Best and Worst Last films by directors, or actors, could be a pretty cool project.
Great review as always Cody! Does this mean the review series is over and you’re not gonna cover Cigarette Burns, Someone’s Watching Me, Elvis or Pro Life? Full disclosure, I haven’t seen any of these nor all of the Carpenter films you’ve covered so far but I just love hearing you discuss movies no matter what
Craven has My Soul to Take and Carpenter has The Ward. Tobe Hooper has a bad tv movie but I don't know the name of it
I would love to hear your thoughts on Jacob's Ladder
4:15 sky high and OFFICIALLY SKY HIGH 2!!
If only John kept the same attitude and quality going forward from classic projects like Halloween and Escape From New York, then maybe his career would’ve turned out like Christopher Nolan.
Hollywood burned him out
@@colinfitz89 and the toxic Michael Myers fanboys. Because he was already trying to do something new, fresh and creative but they didn’t want him too
@@LORDHASBECOMEABOVE This 👆
Can't blame him though. Most of his films were flops financially. Especially The Thing. Imagine putting all your heart and soul into ehat you think is your best work only for it to be overshadowed by some cheesy kids film. I'd be pissed too.
@@RussianPirate-ff7yt I think E.T. is a good film in it's own right, it's the audience's fault for having a poor conception of aliens based off that one highly successful film "All Aliens should be good and kind to humans!" Even though countless sci-fi stories long before had aliens as the bad guys, even Spielberg made aliens intimidating in War of the Worlds and Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Finally! The ending of this review series has come at last. Can't wait for the ranking. Hope Starman makes the top 10!
Look forward to the Carpenter ranking!
Cody, have you heard of the 90s anthology John Carpenter was a part of? It's called "Body Bags." Not only does he co-direct it with Tobe Hooper, produce it and do the music, he also starred in the wrap-around storyline as 'the coroner' and he's actually really funny in the role.
It's a horror but has a tongue in cheek aspect to it. It's a bit like Creep Show.
They say that part of the journey is the end.
And in this case, it’s a shame.
I think Carpenter said if he was to do another movie he'd want to do dead space. In which case i'm game for it.
Hey man, I thought of a cool 31 on 31 theme for you guys. It’s called Phantoms and Fairytales
Candyman (4)
Phantasm (5)
Final Destination (5)
Leprechaun (8)
Terrifier (3)
Wishmaster (3)
Twisted Childhood Universe (3…assuming Peter Pan is out by the 31st)
I know you probably don’t like comments unrelated to the current video, I get it, but I thought this was a great idea and didn’t know where else to post it because I’m not on any other social media. To make part of my comment relevant to the video, I’ll say that I did see The Ward and yeah…it’s not good. I can’t believe this was John Carpenter. I remember it being very amateurish.
Keep rocking man!
I’d watch this over escape la, ghost of mars and a couple others just because it’s competently made and has decent suspense from the setting. I’d like to see a shout factory release or something like that if they brought on carpenter to make another cut of the film with a brand new eerie synth score from him since he didn’t compose it
This film was primed for a spooky heavy synth
This barely even got released. I only heard about it back then because Matthew Buck reviewed it for Projector, and that show covers stuff that opens early in the UK.
Hell I don't think it even got a US release until 2012.
I like to see your review of Hide and Seek with Robert Deniro
This was shot in my hometown. Truly a Stephen King town, unfortunately Mr. Carpenter left this skidmark there.
Hey Cody, this was my favourite of your review series. Great content!
Identity rocks!I love the cast,John Cusack,Ray Liota,John C McGinley and even Rebecca Demornay is solid in this.
You really need to do a review on wolf creek 1 and 2
Congratulations on finishing this epic marathon, Cody. Can't wait for the next one.
I really enjoyed The Ward. I don't know what everyone expected from this movie. Carpenter is now old, tired and working on a shoestring budget.
Just like how I wish Ric Flair's career ended with "I'm sorry, I love you" then the Raw after WrestleMania, I wish John Carpenter's career ended after Vampires. In both cases, it would have ended with such a high, instead it feels like they held on too long. Sometimes you just got to know when to call it quits, but glad to see you finally reached the end. All that's left is the ranking. Thank you, Cody, been one hella ride.
Man, you make me want to make more of an effort with my channel and movie reviews.
Happy to inspire! 🤘
I remember feeling The Ward was a cheap version of Shitter Island. I never seen Carpenters first horror filmn’Someone’s Watching Me’. I think its a TV film. Does it count?
Never saw it & glad I didn't. Well at least we know which movie will be at the bottom of the ranking 😱
I like how cody went from feeling bad that he took so long to review all of carpenters' films to doing 1 a day for like 4 days in a row
We love you cody keep up the great content
Cannot wait for the John Carpenter ranking man. About time! Lol. Good job finally getting to the end. It’s been a cool ride though
Maybe I'm due for a rewatch of this, but I remember liking this movie well enough when I saw it shortly after it was released on DVD. Maybe a little generic, but I remember being entertained enough to watch it a couple of times.
Great video 😂
I'd never heard of this but I was in the middle of leaving my ex husband and I've never gotten round to seeing this. Think I'll give buying it a miss as I love identity 😊💜🐾👍
I've always considered the two Masters of Horror episodes he directed to be his "true" swan song. Check them out if you can, they're great.
I enjoy multiple identity movies, i would request you do a ranking of those type movies. That would be interesting to see.
Carpenter had a great run from the late seventies to the late eighties. He was the king of the low budget genre movie. However, he didn't progress much as a filmmaker once the nineties rolled around. Spielberg graduated from popcorn cinema to making stuff like Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan, while at the same time, Tarantino and other big hitters of nineties cinema were making their mark. Unfortunately, Carpenter never adapted to the changing cinematic landscape and never had his Citizen Kane moment, never made that one movie which would have caused the critics to sit up and re-evaluate his prowess as a filmmaker. His niche was the low budget genre pic and in the eighties, no-one did it better. When all's said and done, if he's only remembered for The Thing and Halloween, that isnt a bad legacy. As for The Ward, I quite enjoyed it upon first viewing... until the ending. If I hadn't seen Identity first, my opinion may have been different. Great cast though, with some nice performances.
This movie really 💩 the bed
Hey Cody, if you going to that Carpenter character ranking, don’t forget my girl Christine! Your character ranking vids are my favourites and there’s too fewer of them
When I first watched this movie, I was actually really into it. I really liked the setting, thought the characters were likable enough and found the monster/ghost to be really creepy. Then...the twist ending happened. It was incredibly lazy, forced, made little sense and ruined the whole movie for me.
Yeah the twist confused the hell out of me too. Like, HUH?!
Yeah I honestly don’t see what’s that bad about it aside from the unnecessary twist.
@@justsumidiot.6426 It felt like a plot twist for the sake of a plot twist.
@@BloodeeJacob Same here. I actually think The Ward would be better received overall if not for its twist ending.
I think one of the fundamental reasons it doesn't feel like a john carpenter movie is because it doesnt sound like a john carpenter movie. Some dude named Mark Killan wrote the music. With out carpenters music a lot of his films would lose a lot of the atmosphere. Its also probably a sign he wasnt very invested in the project that he didnt bother to write music for it.
I love Cody, especially his impressions...cracks me up every time. Probably my #1 inspiration. Btw I know what his #1 John Carpenter film is...... it's THE THING.
I'm with you bro best most honest movie reviewer I've heard.
I remember stumbling across this movie a year ago. I liked it then, idk if I will now
I remember watching this movie way back in the late 2000s. Not a bad movie, just not as good as a lot of his movies.
I remember being so excited to see this when it dropped back then. Watched it once. Thought it was so beneath him and a waste to go out on.
I said Halloween 2 when you did haha great atmospheric movie.
I consider The Ward & Village of the Damned to be worse than Ghosts of Mars for the same reason I consider NOES (2010) to be worse than Freddy's Dead: Lifeless films with no personality are worse than spectacular failures. It felt like Carpenter wasn't even trying with this one.
Could you please review Clearcut (1991)?
I remember that. Native American movie starring Graham Greene. Has an eco message told in an extreme way.
@@jeremyzak654 Well, it's a Canadian movie, and they prefer to use First Nations instead of Native American. But yeah.
You should really watch his episode of Masters of Horror in season 1. It's called Cigarette Burns, and is his last good film in my opinion
I was so excited when this came out and I saw it in the video rental store with Carpenter's name attached. Then I watched it.
Please do Review of session 9 one of the creepiest movie ever made
So I must have rented this in 2011. I know I thought it was meh, better than Ghosts of Mars but can't remember anything about it. It was the same as a Big Mac I ate in 2011.
I kinda want to watch it now.
Paycheck for JC. Same with his recent Peacock TV show.He just wants the $ . I get it,but bummed.
Urban Legend literally saying he directed via Zoom. Cause sure, why not? Gotta pay for Lakers tickets.
Carpenter is notorious for cash grabs… He does crap movies you can tell he didn’t care about. When he cares he makes all time great films…. Gotta pay them bills!!
JC directed this movie pretty much entirely from his trailer. Yes, his name is on it, yes it was a money job, no, I never made it all the way through it.
Cody!!!! You forgot Carpenter's Elvis and Someone Is Watching Me!. Yes, TV movies but movies nonetheless. Heck, you could even review his Body Bags from Showtime. Just saying.
Came here to say that. The list isn’t complete without those
We all end up shitting in a diaper in the end. This is JC shitting in the diaper at the end.
So I just want to be clear.... What you're saying is this is JC shitting in the diaper at the end. Did I hear that correctly? Maybe you should repeat it one more time so that I totally understand where you're coming from.
@@greggibson33 Ok. Ahem. We all end up shitting in a diaper in the end. This is JC shitting in the diaper at the end.
If a movie like this was Wes Cravens last film and he unfortunately passed away afterwards, then we would be more forgiving cause life is unpredictable. John Carpenter is still alive and had the last fourteen years to rectify this mistake. I know he’s old but damn it just stings your soul a bit that this is the last movie he made.
14:34 I feel like I've seen a director like this before, but I can't think of any examples.
David Fincher - Alien 3
1 more banger is all we neeeeeeeeeed!
I am really happy that Carpenter did much music After this movie so this movie is not the last thing to remember about him
Saw this movie years ago before I was fully familiar with Carpenters' work other than the original Halloween. Thought it was dumb when I was 12 and still think it's dumb 10 years later
I'd love to see John Carpenter return just once more, just to scrub away the nasty taste this film left. Surely he doesn't want 'The Ward' to be his last movie, that's a sad way to go out man. Come back John, ONE more time, give us a gory, scary werewolf movie to finish your career :) Oh and BTW Cody, if you like movies set in asylums, have you seen Bad Dreams (1988) it's very good :)
Love everything you do.
Before I became active in social media I didn't know this movie got so much hate. I thought it was fine.
Saw this once years ago. Don't remember much but I thought it was pretty good
I'll have to rewatch this. I remember liking it.
Carpenter is my favorite director. But I'm willing to bet our favorite movies by him are drastically different 😂
BED SHIRTER That's NOT nice. !!!!!!!!! 😔😔😔 oh because it was mentioned in the real life trail she Allegedly pooped the bed.
I hope John Carpenter would come back to direct a good movie one last time before he pass away cause he's still the best director of past decades.
This doesn't count as a proper JC film because... uh.... it just doesn't. So there.
Amber Herd in a mental ward.
Seems right.
It is a documentary
Johnny Depp should be there
Carpenter's Shutter Island?
Should I be ashamed that this is one of my favorite movies of all time? 😂 i love all the cliche tropes 😅
It's kinda funny that you use Secret Window as a reference for this, since it's ya'know.... JD, in a better film with the same trope....
Amber Heard (pre-Depp, pre-bedpoop) was quickly becoming a modern Scream Queen. ‘All The Boys Love Mandy Lane’ is an underrated gem. I hope Cody reviews that one.
Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
I've never seen "The Ward".
Although, judging by this review, I now know why.
Nothing else to say other than it's just sad to know that John Carpenter made something like this.
Thank god Carpenter still makes music still so we still get great work from him. Luckily this isn’t the last piece of art that Carpenter has made.
The ward is not as bad as I anticipated. It definitely does not feel like a carpenter film but when viewed as a little cheap thriller movie is decent.
ive seen this before and had no clue it was a carpenter movie! i thought i had watched them all
Carpenter's "voice" was missing (not style)
Hey! It's Cody Leach! I know that guy!
a young sydney sweeney is in this as well
This started off good but soon I was ready for it to be over with.
