Tell you what, this was one of his earlier films, low budget and basically a modernised spagetti western, and he casted a black man as the HERO. You can imagine the shit he got. Max respect to Carpenter for being the man and flipping the bird the studio.
He says that actors are difficult to work with, but good people. I guess he means they're able to use their talents, usually able and willing to do that at least.
Is it just me? After they ask him 'where his stye comes from' he points at his head and maybe accidentely at the mole/dot on his head. The French guy says ' the dot.' As if that is the answer. All Carpenter's ideas come from a dot on his head.
I don't quite understand his story about shooting in a real prison and firing guns there all day long. In the film there is no shoot-out inside or around the cells. There are only some tiny scenes when gang members run down the corridor and are shot by Leigh. And of course the sequence when Leigh wants to let Wilson and Wells out of their cells and is hidden by a bullet in her arm. But it's hard to believe it took a whole day to shoot the cell scenes.
First off the scene was supposed to take place in the evening or night even. So they either had to wait for it to actually become dark or they artificially had to make it look like it was. That requires a lot of work. Then the scene you described probably has been shot more than once. Whenever Leigh looks at the direction the goons are coming in from they had to film that also. They were also on a very tight budget and didn't want to waste film so I am guessing they had to do a lot of rehearsing so that both the acting, choreography and effects would be adequate. Laurie Zimmer didn't think her acting was that good so she probably needed some convincing as well. The goons or thugs also had to come in at the right moment. Carpenter also just said he wasn't familiar with all the new equipment so he had to learn it on the spot. And have you tried it yourself to film something? To film scenes the way you want. Often things come in between or something malfunctions or whatever. It very easily can take more than a day to set up and film a scene.
They didn't have digital equipment back then, so actual footage started costing big money. Just getting the lighting to be the way you want on screen is quite a task!
One of the things he didn't know about is firearms. Moves such as this have given the public, and our misinformed politicians, a false impression about the use of suppressors or silencers as they inaccurately call them. The use of suppressors does not make a firearm silent or anymore deadly. In the UK, where gun laws are absurd the use of suppressors is very wide spread. However, in the USA, due in part to Hollywood's depiction of them, the ability to acquire a suppressor is very costly and time consuming.
One of the best directors of all time!!!
Skyladikooo ..WORD!
Absolutely! I love watching these interviews with the directors. He and Michael Mann are two of my favorite directors.

You don't know how much they filmed and didn't use, there could be deleted scenes.
the amount of time it takes to set up and shoot a scene is greater than you probably think.
