I think it's much more important to deal with the problems over in the Middle East rather than the problems we have over here. What seems more important to you: putting a stop to catcalling and mild discrimination here in America, or focusing our attention towards the countless inequality problems plaguing Saudi Arabia right now?

    Well why don't ya make a vid about if men are equal or not? You can talk about, hmm, i don't know, the fact that men are forced to fight in wars, to save everybody but themselves in case of an emergency, the fact that in almost all the divorce cases women are the ones to get the children and belongings, the fact that murder and suicide rates are so much higher for men then for women... etc, etc

      As a feminist, I believe in equal rights for ALL people. This includes men, and I do believe that the issues you have raised are important feminist issues that I believe should be solved AS WELL AS the issues women face. Equality is a right, no matter age, sexuality, religion or gender you are (etc.). That is the true meaning of feminism.

    • @Sasha-so2vf
      @Sasha-so2vf 7 років тому +44

      First of all, thank you so much for being polite. But i do disagree with you on a point that the issues i have listed are feminist issues. Feminism is of course at its core a belief in the total gender equality, but that doesen't really match today's feminist movement and what they are saying\doing. You don't really see feminists fighting for men... Also i really don't understand why a lot of feminists are bringing racial and sexuality issues into the conversation when these are entirely different topics.

    • @eleven3079
      @eleven3079 7 років тому +16

      Like Millie said, (most) feminists believe that all genders should be equal and believe in rights for men. Feminists bring up topics that do not (seem) to relate to them. They talk about topics like black men getting shot by police officers, or two women being unable to get married, or not being allowed to pee in the bathroom you feel comfortable in because you're birth certificate says you're of the opposite gender. Many of these issues do relate to gender, and are thus feminist issues. Feminism started as a movement to allow women to vote, and it's become more than that. Some women are black, and face racism. Some women weren't born women and want to be accepted as who they are.Some women are immigrants and face xenophobia. Some men get drafted into the army. Feminism is about nuance about problems with gender, but ultimately there's a lot more wrapped up in people than just there gender. For instance, back when the suffrage movement was happening, race HAD to be involved because some people who were ok with white women voting weren't ok with black women voting. Similar difficulties exist today.
      Plus, just because someone's a feminist, doesn't mean they can't be active in other groups/ causes. We care about equality, essentially. if you have run into feminists who don't seem to care about equality, that sucks, and I'm sorry. This isn't the experience I've had, but hey, every group has bad people, just as every group has good people. Many feminists care about men's rights :D.
      Anyway, sorry I kind of rambled, but I hope I answered your question about why feminists bring up seemingly unrelated issues.

      Economists and statisticians know it doesn't exist. The data behind it is correct. On average women get payed less. However, this is because women tend to choose jobs that pay less.

    Being an African american girl, growing up I was always told that I would be treated like I was not a person because of the color of my skin and the fact that I was a girl. I didn't think it was true but I have had to deal with inequality everywhere I go. So to see that they made a video like this, I hope people and younger girls see that there are people going through the same things as you. If I would have had something like this growing up I wouldn't have felt so alone.

      Kenya Africa as a black man, I'm seriously tired of listening black women complain about how hard they have it. I say listening since black women for some reason think I as a black man owe it to them to listen to their opinion, so they just share it with me often times unsolicited. This is why I don't date black women, and btw the girl in the video is in a relationship with a black man - he probably feels the same. Black women are always living in that victim mentality, and think they're both the best and worst things to ever happen to humanity!

    • @kjb1215
      @kjb1215 7 років тому +22

      Mike Davis I was just sharing my opinion on the video I was not saying I had it harder, I'm not throwing a pity party. Black men have it hard as well even harder so for me to say how this video made me feel is not a crime. I was talking about personal experiences, I did not say anything about her dating a black man. Anyone can love who they want and its okay if you do not date black women, I am not offended by who you are or not attracted to. Everyone else is commenting on this video yet when I comment, you say that I am "playing the victim." I was not. You must be frustrated with someone else in your life and taking it out on me for deciding I wanted to publicly comment on something, I and others enjoyed. I hope you have a nice day.

How can we possibly try to fight inequality in the Middle East when we can't even fight for a more easily obtained equality in the US? Think of your country before pretending that you care for others.

      Whatever your political alignment is, don't agree with the ERA. This is what it will do to women:
      The amendment would require women to be drafted into military combat any time men were conscripted, abolish the presumption that the husband should support his wife and take away Social Security benefits for wives and widows. It would also give federal courts and the federal government enormous new powers to reinterpret every law that makes a distinction based on gender, such as those related to marriage, divorce and alimony.
      It seems women will only lose more rights by being ''equal'', don't allow the government to do this to widows and women with little money.

    • @mariahlewis4447
      @mariahlewis4447 7 років тому +6

      If you're implying that women are weaker than men then you're wrong. A woman can fight just as well as a man, also there should be no presumption that either spouse should just support the other, they need to work as a whole In this economy, especially with trump as president. Also I don't believe that would affect the SS system at all, and the laws would just be rewrote to include both genders, there is the equality of marriage act, you know that right?, and equality of genders means everyone is equal by LAW.

      Okay so this isn't about your main point but one thing that has been really common is people's view on women's right on the Middle East. People keep assuming that the whole of the Middle East oppresses women. Actually that's not the case. Having lived in the UAE for over 10 years I can say that as a women I can go out without a man and I can do all the things people assume for example not being being able to drive and vote, we can, and so many other things too. So I'm sorry this isn't about what you're trying to say but I wanted to clear it up so it doesn't misguide others. This also applies to most Middle Eastern countries like Oman, Qatar, etc. (except Saudi Arabia)

Does it only affect the top jobs? And didn't they pass a law saying that you can't pay someone more or less just because of their gender, sexuality, race, and so on

    • @JebsonofJeb
      @JebsonofJeb 7 років тому +20

      you are correct. The wage gap has been debunked numerous times. It has been illegal to pay someone less for those reasons above for over 30 years. Also the numbers they got from the whole wage gap were sloppy. They compared how much men and women make. They didn't take into account the amount of time each individual took off work, or how men tend to take jobs that pay more. Women tend to work shorter days and have maternity leave(pregnancy and taking care of the baby. they don't pay you for that in the US) which does change the numbers. Feminists just rolled with the numbers and thats how we have the whole wage gap issue.

      At my job, everyone starts at the same salary (I am a teacher). However, you can make MORE money being a coach, advisor, covering classes, doing home instructions but these stipends vary. Obviously my friend who is a coach would make more additional money than me, who is simply an advisor to a club. In that case, yes there are people that make more money than me that started at the same time as me, and who are tenure-track teachers as I am too.
      Other jobs vary as well. If you have prior experience, if you have a more advanced degree, additional certifications, put in extra time, and take on extra projects but you still have the same "job position" as someone else, your pay will vary.

      countries do not exist in vacuums. we can't be like 'help them first' because they don't exist in their own space. cultures all over the world inform others, especially massively influential cultures like that of the states. we must address the issues on our own ground as well. also don't think that no one from developing countries is doing women's rights activism. to say we should swoop in and 'fix' the issues women in developing countries face implies that they can't do anything for themselves, when they are.

      Just be careful who you push off that swing. Some girl pushes me off of Swing I'm liable to stand up and punch her in the face. The difference is men are stronger and bigger. Women are more delicate and loving. Overall the man is more powerful as a human being than the woman. It's just nature and that's the way it is. This equality thing is just stupid. You can see it clearly around you everyday. Women love a big strong man and Men love a soft delicate woman.. they balance each other out

      I'm really sorry if it seems like I'm having a go at you but
      your Middle East comment got my attention and I wanted to clear some
      stuff up because there are a lot of misconceptions. People keep assuming
      that the whole of the Middle East oppresses women.
      Actually that's not the case. Having lived in the UAE for over 10 years I
      can say that as a women I can go out without a man and I can do all the
      things people assume for example not being being able to drive and
      vote, we can, and so many other things too. So I'm sorry this isn't
      about what you're trying to say but I wanted to clear it up so it
      doesn't misguide others and so people are a little more specific instead
      of generalizing the whole of the Middle East. This also applies to most
      Middle Eastern
      countries like Oman, Qatar, etc. (except Saudi Arabia)

      Jelly Fish femenists AREN'T useful because they neither help, nor talk about the middle east. They just complain about petty first world white girl problems while shove the definition of feminism down our throats. I WISH feminists helped the middle east.

    Instead of focusing on women's equality in modernised places such as America or England, we should focus on women in places like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Nepal, etc. where they don't even have anything close to equal rights. Our worries about the pay gap and other 1st world problems shouldn't even need a comparison in feminism when there's women who can't even leave their home without a male accompanying them. Instead of conducting "surveys" with the intention of just getting money as a result, either say proudly that you are a feminist and will fight for the women who actually need equality to make their quality of life better over the women who have the basic right of free will.

    Including abortion under equal rights is tricky, because abortions are only relevant to women, not to men. Not sure the ERA could guarantee abortion rights and other reproductive/anatomy based rights if the premise of the ERA is equality of the sexes. That being said I'm all for women's reproductive rights.
    As for the wage gap... still haven't encountered an argument that convinces me it exists. But yes I think women should be paid the same as men for the same work.

      Nor Frk the wage gap info I found is that it only effects women who have children normally or are in that life stage so it could be a preconceived notion that she is going to take time off more or be part time even if that's not necessarily true, also if you have kids you can't schmooze with your boss as much for raises as a man could

    I've got so many feelings about this topic lately, and I don't completely agree with the movement. But since I can't have a actual discussion through UA-cam comments I'll just leave a comment. Why not change the amendment to state that all people are equal? Why create it specifically for women, minorities, transgender, etc? (edited to remove some typos)

    • @jusstcallmeclo
      @jusstcallmeclo 7 років тому +3

      Brian Harris I get what your saying. It would be great to live in a world where we could all be 'egalitarians' or 'humanists' or whatever people like to call themselves. But names have power you know. It's like why it's called feminism or the black lives matter movement. Of course we should all be equal but by changing the name I feel like it tries to hide that fact that women suffer differently to men in some ways. It's sort of erasing the difficulties that women had to face and in some ways continue to face in the modern times. By having it be called FEMinism or the equal rights amendment you can acknowledge that yes this is a problem that targets this one particular group of people. Because we all don't suffer the same way. That's just how I see it tho and that's why I would always consider myself a feminist and not an egalitarian.
