Hi there. Finnish army member here. Our bigger tents have a wood stove in the middle and boys and girls are sleeping around that feet towards the stove. That is the reason for that foot end protection. That Savotta tent is meant for about 15 persons, so it is a big tent and a big stove. And one more thing. Army doesn't use that M05 camo in sleeping bags. Just that Carinthia olive greenish brown (it is cheaper). That M05 camo we have in our clothes. Cheers from Finland.
Nice sleeping bag. The Fins have always interested me with their stuff and history, especially the Winter War. Hard people with cool camo. Thank you for sharing
While I generally prefer treated down quilts for general camping, primarily due to the size and weight savings for comparable warmth, I have the regular version of this bag(Defence 4) and love it. The "lower limit" rating of -15C/5F is spot on for me. So far the coldest I've taken it was -13C/8F in conjunction with an Exped Dura 5R pad and Dutch hooped bivy. I was acceptably comfy all night. Combined with their Tropen bag it's supposedly good to extremely low temps. It is a bit bulky but so well built I also don't have to baby it like some of my lighter weight stuff.
Varusteleka also had a Dutch bivy that was the same style, front opening and perfect for this bag. I grabbed that and had my wife put a zipper and the two work awesome together. The only problem......very minor, but as Mr. Pathfinder mentioned, it covers up the awesome camo. :( Oh well, small price to pay. Thanks for this review, I have yet to use mine at a temp worthy of it. Weather in Alberta here has been up and down. Still waiting for a chance. Thanks for all your content, Sir. You also compelled me to build my own fighting order out of surplus and I used your video to do it. Love all your content with Mr. Bergman in Alaska as well. Take care, Sir! o7
👍👍👍 Carinthia .. used by the Finns and from Varusteleka .. then it must be good 😊. 'Camouflage' Patterns .. another advantage is that they do not 'show dirt and stains' as readily as the bland fabrics .. especially trouser fronts 😊. A good share .. thanks.
😁 even after your long and experienced career as a soldier you still find camouflage patterns cool and even “ sexy shit “ Great 😁👍🏻 I need a good winter bag actually, needs to be roomy as I’am a bit of a lump and can’t bare being constricted. Great, thorough, honest informative review Tom👍🏻
Great video - still thinking about whether to go down and be extra careful or accept the weight despite being old and knackered. Are you not a fan of pack directly inside bivvy and straight into the rucksack as per military rather than use compression sack ? Also good to know what you think is the best rucksack liner. Orlieb XL short (79l) with an easy to pack wide opening doesn't seem to be available. I bought a new PD350 to replace my old Faithfull but it's long and thin and difficult to pack unlike the XL short 79 version of the massive 109 litre one.
Nice bag. I’ve used down and in even a slight damp conditions had problems and mummy bags are so restrictive unless they are centre zips, which I prefer, easier to get out of. Still use my 90 ptn for the winter and spring in Northumberland. 2kg not too bad for a good nights dry and warm sleep
Finnish m05 is easily my favourite camo, something about it appeals go greatly to me even as a UK dweller. How do you think it does in our environment?
Is that m05 any larger for the shoulders than the defense4? I purchased the defense 4 and i cant do the zipper up . Works for my son though and he loves it.
Great review. Looks like the British Medium bag on steroids, with a zip in liner and fire resistant foot box. That camo pattern is well Gucci. The British bag itself is derived from the Carinthia Def 4 I believe (as is the lightweight bag a cheap Tropen), but made to a price by Fesca. Got both of them but I only use the medium bag for winter car camping and fishing now as it's just too big n heavy to carry in my backpack. The Carinthia compression bag is miles better that the G10 one. The material is too thick on the G10 one so it doesn't cinch up well and the coating flakes off after a while. The only thing missing from the M05 is the repair zip, but then it probably has a decent zip that is more squaddy proof than the G10 version.
@PreparedPathfinder I just wanted to let you know that the m05 version of the bag was sadly discontinued a few months ago but they still have the normal one.
@heatherb5348 I really doubt that. If you are doing a review, do your research and of this was a delayed release video, add something in the description.
@PreparedPathfinder that is fair! I apologize for my previous posts. An honest mistake is an honest mistake. Too bad about this bag, it was probably one of the coolest ever made. The regular Carinthia 4 is available in a couple of different patterns as well, just not M05. For me M05 is a substitute for Flecktarn. A good, dark pattern that works pretty darn good in pine forests or spruce bogs.
Varusteleka says the insulation is layers of hollow fill synthetic fiber made in Austria and good to 0 F. Likely similar to a version of US made Climashield used in US military mummy's. MY WINTER MUMMY-> LL Bean -20 F. down (with DWR water resisting) treatment, size Long for storage of boot liners, water, electronics. Wearing a light down jacket and down pants over a base layer would get me to -30 F. (PLUS a fleece balaclava and glove liners).
what are those sleeping bags called that has Velcro or something so you can burst out of it? I think the US Marines use them? Whenever I was on exercise or training I would just rest the bag over me like a blanket and stay in kit. Imagine being bumped in real life and you're in a sleeping bag in your boxers hahaha!
@@Soggz7785hi m8 I’ve got the defence 4 carinthia which is basically the same as the mo5 but minus the foot box and got the modular winter bag and bout same warmth but bulkier than def 4 and in my opinion both are better than the old arctic bag which I thought was never warm much less than zero and had a few

I have the regular Olive version. Great bag
The colder you go, the more you carry so it's not strange to have a larger sleep system. I've got a wind breaker in that pattern and I love it.
