I stripped that same weird black finish off a Gibson RD Artist bass, which turned out to be solid, unblemished maple underneath. I started with Formby's™ chemical paint stripper -- saved me a f4&k of a lot of hard sanding -- and was able to go straight to the finish sanding. Gave it several coats of satin polyurethane, and have never regretted it.
I’ve got an epiphone Sg. It’s the 1996 limited edition with the full pick guard. It’s got the gloss finish an I would prefer the faded look. Not sure if I have the balls to try to refinish it.
Those things are really easy to remove too, and makes it so much easier to sand the whole thing down. Plug the holes with tissue paper. Keep the ground wire in if you want, doesn’t matter except for the dangling in the pot bay.
Is the reason you power sand, rather than use chemical stripper or heat, due to concerns of delamination? Just asking for my own upcoming projects? Thank you.
Quick question, instead of using the sander to strip the paint off the body, why don't you use CitriStrip? It's nontoxic and you wouldn't need to use a chisel for the tight corners, just a old tooth brush. Plus, it cuts out the possibility of any accidental waviness or gouges from sanding to remove the finish.
Does anyone know what wiping the guitar down with lighter fuel is for? I've watched a ton of guitar vids, in hopes of one day doing my own builds, and have yet to see this technique.
I just really wish they’d do more than the same two colors on this guitar because in my mind it is better than the Les Paul and should be able to appeal to anyone
Under no circumstances has the thought occurred to me toTake a 60 grit orbital to a SG Standard. Its a sensitive musical instrument, not a fence post. Im just say 'en. Non destructive methods are the name of the game. Great video! keep em coming!
did the new paint affect the sound of the guitar....I'm thinking of repainting my guitar and was curious about that....hopw you can answer.....thanks and cool work...
man i dig your videos, dont get me wrong but can i give you a little advice? dont show the ENTIRE thing when youre sanding a part of the guitar, the start is enough imho it gets boring after a while, and please put up some music just to give it a bit of life besides those things, i dig your works and subbed to the channel :) cheers from italy
I stripped down epiphones from like the early 90s and the SGS were like two pieces beautiful mahogany but they had mahogany necks and now you'll get them a mahogany body only rock Maple neck and advertising is made of mahogany..
Very ambitious! Even Gibson is gotten a little lacked in their products. I have a 1960 double cut Melody Maker, and the body is a one piece mahogany. Thank you for sharing! Thankz
You know....if you put a little ball bearing in the threaded stud hole of the bridge and/or tailpiece...you can slowly screw the respective bolt back in and the studs will come out. works every time. I dont understand your vid. You spray painted it black..took the tape off and now stripping?? So...where is the end product.
all that sanding scrapping and whatever to spray paint the noble sg with a can of spray paint, are you high on moosehead lager beer ? why don't you work on hockey sticks instead.
As much as them damn Gibsons are they shouldn't be putting three pieces of different mahogany blanks at least two piece would be better for the price how an epiphone has three pieces of scraps
Looks like a 3 piece mahogany body aint it ? Sum chinese copies i see have a 2 at most . Doesnt matter to the tone i know but dont know the quality of the mahogany either. Aint u better stripping a chinese made one if ur a=on a budget like me ? Shud be a hideous job to do stripping a thick poly coat tough >

Hey man...I never really comment on sh!t, but like the vids keep it up. I've refinished a couple squiers in my day. It's not easy. Excellent work.
I do not know what is wrong with me but I love your videos I think is kind of therapeutic. Can't wait to see your next one.
Nice job getting the finish off. I look forward to seeing what the new finish will be.
Gonna be a looker, I can see her already, Can't wait!!! Good times, Good video
Have you thought of leaving it natural? Might be cool! Maybe something to bring out the grain and then clear coat.

I want to do the same to my Shiny cherry Epi SG but I couldnt find any vid of how its done
@@ManiaDepre you would want to sand it down with fine grit an then reapply a matte clear
@@lionlocVanDwellington Thank you very much!
seeing the paint get chiseled away from the binding gave me hardcore asmr
Quick question, I bought a Gibson someone sanded down, they also sanded the ebony overlay on the headstock, how do I go about putting gloss on it?
right? that's fucked! do you have much experience with gfs guitar kits?
It did rain pretty good didn't it?
only thing i hate about your videos.....when they are over. great job with your channel bro.
hi woodeso, a question:
Why you sand with the bridge and tailpiece bushings on?
thanks for the vids!!!
Those things are really easy to remove too, and makes it so much easier to sand the whole thing down. Plug the holes with tissue paper. Keep the ground wire in if you want, doesn’t matter except for the dangling in the pot bay.
Why didn't you pop out the bushings for the bridge and tailpiece?
Meh.. I could have done... it's actually not that hard. Probably should have done... but this worked too;-)
3:22 is it important to not sand down where the bridge sits?
Why leave the bridge studs in?
Dust mask?
Is the reason you power sand, rather than use chemical stripper or heat, due to concerns of delamination? Just asking for my own upcoming projects? Thank you.
You really should wear a respirator when sanding. The chemicals in the paint can mess you up.
Yeah, pretty idiodoc.

This was definitely the "hard way" citristrip is not without issues - keep it off bindings and inlays.
I was totally looking away when the sanding started and instantly wondered why I could hear a chorus of vuvuzelas.
you should totally go for one of these "worn" finishes (stain?), or just oil finish that.... would look amazing
Maybe they put that little piece of maple to brighten it up a little

It cleans thoroughly and dries instantly, with no smears.
Jesus! u just finished the gold top! you're a fucking monster! keep it up!
Love the video as always. Is that a crack between the neck and the neck pickup routing?
Quick question Nelson, when you taped the neck for paint did you tape the neck binding or did you paint over it and after scrap it off ? Thanks
Bobby Lopes I would say taping the binding is much easier rather than scraping the paint
Antique white with gold fittings really suits the SG.
As an SG fanatic I can't wait to see what you do with this one.
just put tru oil or stein on that guitar, beautyful wood grain ,
Exactly sir 5:41 that's a piece of maple
I just really wish they’d do more than the same two colors on this guitar because in my mind it is better than the Les Paul and should be able to appeal to anyone
I agree fully. I wish Gibson would do something like the Epiphone Inspired By lineup, those have some cool finishes!
Under no circumstances has the thought occurred to me toTake a 60 grit orbital to a SG Standard. Its a sensitive musical instrument, not a fence post. Im just say 'en. Non destructive methods are the name of the game. Great video! keep em coming!
How does one acquire your services?

Wow!I would strip it. No sand !! That’s crazy not to use a chemical. First time ?
man i dig your videos, dont get me wrong but can i give you a little advice?

Boom!
cool vid
Someone is a fickle pickle
So many people get butt hurt over a guy tinkering with his guitar, I think it's great. There are far worse things one can have as a hobby!
your amazing bro

wow haha. way to go wood matching, gibson! i think i'll stick with epiphone. i know what i'm getting and paying for!
Holy Smokes
that don't even look like mahogany when you're right hand is on guitar
Oh look, another video with no follow-up.
can u strip my guitar
Pls don't be red....
As much as them damn Gibsons are they shouldn't be putting three pieces of different mahogany blanks at least two piece would be better for the price how an epiphone has three pieces of scraps
The wood looks cheap
Naked!!
Use stripper first

plz stop ruining guitars like this
Ruining how's this ruining it's improving
Sure bro... Now's your time to shine and show us how it's done. Post a link to the videos you have up showing us how to do it!
+Woodeso's Guitar Mods exactly nelson
What do you mean " show us how its done" You shouldn´t have taken away the paint in the first place on a sg
+Nick Nine he can do what ever he wants you literally can't stop him hahaha
I like you videos , but why use the F bomb ? I don't get the reason to use it about guitars !!!
You ruined that guitar man
