  • This lecture is about atomic mass unit in chemistry. In this animated lecture, I will explain you the easy concept of 1 amu and how many grams are there in 1 atomic mass unit.
Q: What is atomic mass unit?
Ans: Atomic mass is defined as the unit used to measure the mass of atoms which is equal to one twelfth of the mass of an atom of carbon 12 is called atomic mass unit or 1 amu.
To learn more about atomic mass unit and its derivation, watch this lecture till the end.

And the reason why the mass of a proton is not exactly 1 amu is because the protons and neutrons that makeup a C-12 atom (and all atoms) are known to weigh different amounts? Therefore, the mass of one proton and one neutron is not exactly equal to 1 amu? My Chemistry book says that 1 proton weighs 1.0073 amu and one neutron weighs 1.0087 amu. How is that possible since that adds to more than 12 amu for a C-12 atom?

1 amu = 1 over 12 of carbon-12, not any carbon atom since carbon has two stable isotopes, carbon 12 and carbon 13.
it is carbon 12 since it is an atom that has relative atomic mass of 12.0
it could be any atom, but carbon 12 was chosen since it has 6 protons, 6 neutrons and 6 electrons.
