A period is a horizontal row of the periodic table. There are seven periods in the periodic table, with each one beginning at the far left. A new period begins when a new principal energy level begins filling with electrons. Period 1 has only two elements (hydrogen and helium), while periods 2 and 3 have 8 elements.
The main points of the periodic table:
Each column is called a group. All elements in a group have similar chemical and physical properties because they have the same number of outer electrons. Periods - In periodic table elements are arranged in a series of rows. Elements of the same period have the same number of electron shells.
Dmitri Mendeleev is often referred to as the Father of the Periodic Table. He called his table or matrix, "the Periodic System".

On the periodic table, elements are listed in order of increasing atomic number. Elements in the same row are in the same period. This means they have similar physical properties, such as how well they bend or conduct electricity. Elements in the same column are in the same group.
Valency:
For example; If the number of electrons present in the valence outermost shell are 4,3,2,1 then their valency will be 4,3,2,1 respectively. If the number of electrons present in the valence outermost shell, then their valency is 8-5=3, 8-6=2, 8-7=1 respectively.
The periodic table is rectangular in shape, consisting of rows and columns of elements arranged in a specific order. The periodic table has a total of seven rows, called periods, and 18 columns, called groups.
A modern periodic table arranges the elements in increasing order of their atomic numbers and groups atoms with similar properties in the same vertical column (Figure 3.2. 2). Each box represents an element and contains its atomic number, symbol, average atomic mass, and (sometimes) name.
The periodic table is the most important reference a chemist has because it puts all the known elements into a meaningful pattern. Elements are arranged left to right and top to bottom in order of increasing atomic number. This order generally goes with increasing atomic mass.
18 groups in periodic table:
Groups are numbered 1-18 from left to right. The elements in group 1 are known as the alkali metals; those in group 2 are the alkaline earth metals; those in 15 are the pnictogens; those in 16 are the chalcogens; those in 17 are the halogens; and those in 18 are the noble gases.
