  • My advice is don't stop every time someone asks you to but know your audience. Business people, who nicely ask me to stop for coffee, I'll stop every time for two reasons:
    1. they usually are not paying for it out of their own pocket.
    2. They usually have money and understand that you are in the service industry and they understand that time is money.
Will I stop at toco bell, at bar close when there is a surge going on? Absolutely not.

I don't mind stopping most of the time. Out of 1K rides, maybe a couple people asked me to stop at the grocery store (expecting me to wait for them to shop). Of course I didn't wait. I always tell them the max amount of wait time is 5 minutes. Once that is up, they can call for another ride.
The biggest tip I ever got was stopping at a corner store so the guy could buy some beer.
He hooked me up with a $50 cash tip. Said since I took care of him, he'd take care of me.
More often than not, I will get a tip.

Agreed. With grocery store stops I usually tell them "I'll hang out here in the parking lot and will accept your ride if I have not gotten another one." Just make sure they take all their junk with them.

Sometimes you get nothing(tip wise) for going the extra mile but sometimes it pays off big time. I recently got a $30 tip for walking a lady's bag up to her door as she was not feeling well.

Tips can come from any ride. Drivers feel obligated to stop because they don’t want a complaint or bad rating. If you’re driven by tips, this isn’t the job for you. Riders with corporate accounts are least likely to tip because tips come from the rider directly, not the company they work for. Riders have articulated this to me that use accounts from companies such as Adidas and Intel.

I agree you absolutely can not be driven by tips and I believe in treating the customer right and letting the tips happen if they happen. I do pick and choose who I stop for and I absolutely do not worry about ratings or complaints.

Totally agree and discernment is key. Tips can be so random. Be sure and value your own time as well. You are there to make money, not a volunteer. It's a constant balancing act.

Yes exactly. The more you drive for uber the more you pick up on if it will be worth it or not.
