Pakistan Installs National Firewall to Control Social Media Content | Moeed Pirzada

Pakistan is installing a national firewall across various internet service providers to regulate social media content, as confirmed by multiple sources. The firewall, already purchased and being commissioned, aims to block unwanted content and identify the origins of propaganda material. This technology has been in limited use since 2013 with Netsweeper filters on Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited, but the new setup will feature a keyword filtering system to detect and block content deemed prejudicial to national security.
The firewall will monitor social media platforms like Facebook, UA-cam, and X (formerly Twitter), and preparations are underway to regulate the use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). The government has mandated that citizens must report their VPN use to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), with non-compliance leading to potential repercussions.
Despite X/Twitter being blocked for months, many users accessed it through VPNs, prompting temporary halts in VPN crackdowns due to corporate community unrest. A government official noted that the blockade reduced X/Twitter’s user base in Pakistan by nearly half, affecting the platform’s business and leading to increased compliance with government demands. One notable compliance involved blocking an account used by Maj (r) Adil Raja to criticize the current army leadership.
