Hope everyone is doing well this Monday! This is another case that slipped by relatively unnoticed as it occurred around the same time of Gabby Petito's disappearance. This case should open our eyes to the fact that maintenance workers should not have keys to tenants' apartments.
They should be issued a Master key by the front desk only went sent on a maintenance call and all uses of that key logged in the computer system as its used. That way if they use it in a door they weren't authorized to they would know. But it will likely never happen as such monitoring is expensive and no one cares enough to do anything to ensure that level of security. Why do you think Hotels advise you not to leave anything valuable in your room even inside the provided "safe" in the room? Because they know your room is not secure at all. My step father worked as a maintenance guy at a big hotel chain and behind the front desk is literally a box of master keys they can just grab from. In fact there were days he accidentally brought his key home with him and no one checked to ensure he returned it. Which means if I were unscrupulous I could had grabbed his key on those days, drove over and helped myself to any room I wanted. And since I wasn't an employee no one would had even suspected me as I would just appear as if I'm a guest.
Key should be issued to maintenance workers when work is being performed and a “issue and control log” be required

@@oneway6627 If your speaking of metal keys then yes, cutting a new key is easy. (Depending on the lock) However if its just a common cheap off the shelf lock then it can be just as easy to pick them. Thats why hotels and most places do not use them. They tend to use electronic keycards. Harder to copy but its not the copying that is an issue. Its lax security right out of the front desk and with employment checks.
I never understood why in the US the maintance guy has to have your key. It's so SO dangerous specially for kids or single women. In most countries they can't get into anyones apartment unless the person that lives in it allows them. Only the owner of the place or the one renting has the key and in fact ususally after a lease is over and the tenants leave, the owner changes the locks.
Nothing scarier than not being safe in your own home.
The Apartment Complex is very negligent, he had basically 24/7 Wherever he wanted to go and it didnt seem anyone was keeping an eye on him
The Maintenance men prey on women a lot, find reasons to go to there apartment etc. this is a widespread problem. Not saying all maintenance men are like this just its a problem.
At work as well. Costco has no Cameras in the Distribution Center. And allows Sexual Harassment, blaming the female employees. "You have to deal with it.", "Happens all the time ", " Men are Men.", "Women must submit."... Were some of the responses the managers would give me after my reports. Fuck Costco.

This girl went to my school, everyone knew her, she was super nice to everyone. Having such a tragedy strike close to home hurt our community deeply.
This isn't about you. Don't be so self-centered, just because she went to your school doesn't make you a poor victim of a tragedy. It didn't hurt you. Did you cry yourself to sleep every night? No you went about your life as normal. This creep was my maintenance worker and not only worked in my apartment several times, but spoke with my son on many occasions. This is where he ended up hanging himself.
My son spent several days with Miya's parents looking for her throughout our neighborhood and our surroundings forrest. My son said the hardest part was watching the desperate hope of her loving family. Her family never gave up! May God continue to bring them comfort.
I’m sorry you had the misfortune to meet that creep. The fact that he got away with his creepy past but allowed to work at the Arden Villas shows the apartment complex should have done screening to not let him work there

There’s a real problem with maintenance workers at apartments. I acquired a stalker from an apartment once. I had to move cities, change cars, jobs, appearance…I haven’t been the same since. Spoke to a friend last week who is moving due to the SAME exact circumstance. They need to run thorough background checks on these workers, this happens way too much.

Not only thorough background checks, but implement resident surveys where they can voice concerns of a stalker so the owners/police can investigate accordingly.

Seems to be an American thing. Criminal background checks is very routine in England for most every job working with the public or where you can have access to young, old or vulnerable.

Dude was my neighbor for years before I moved out of Florida and to Texas. His family was always super nice, a bunch of people in one house, but he was the quietest one. Never really thought much of him because of the age difference we had. Crazy to find this out. Feel bad for his family because we were close when we were kids but not as bad as I do for the victim’s family. Heart goes out to her family, they seem strong together.

This is a huge fear of mine. I have an 18 year old daughter, she’s a cute, petite young woman. She just started working in a restaurant and, of course, gets the night shift. I hate it. I hate that a woman can be doing everything right in her life and a man can see her as disposable.
She could quit the night job and do something else.

This case rocked the Trinidadian community of Orlando. Knew her dad personally, he's a well known DJ. This was so sad. Such a beautiful young lady. May she eternally rest in perfect peace. 🕊️🇹🇹

Her family is the definition of "You mess with one of us, you mess with all of us." They were ready to take this whole case into their hands.

It's a shame but that's the cost of having red tape & laws that are meant to protect people from unlawful detainment. In this case though I really think he shouldve been arrested after having her items on him. Just keep him overnight while they investigated. They could've found a way to do that I'm sure, he was definitely guilty of a crime they couldve used to hold him
I applaud them, they were fierce! It's such a shame that it didn't really matter in the end... The police footage is sooo frustrating to watch! He's right there, lying through his teeth and they can't get him. Ugh! I hope he burns in hell.
This is so sad and not the first case of a creepy security guard or maintenance entering into a woman's apartment without consent. Not even the first case or the last I'll hear. It's so scary. People that are meant to protect you or help you end up being the most dangerous threat there. She didn't deserve this. All she was doing was trying to go to school, work, live as any normal woman her age and she wasn't even able to do that safely.

Mia's family definitely needs to sue that property management company.
It is criminally neglegent to hire any multi housing employee with a criminal record. Not only that but it's actually a violation of federal law.
Suing won't bring their loved one back obviously, but taking that company to the cleaners may stop them from doing business anymore and thereby protecting an untold amount of people.

@@altheagarner2992Miya's family has sued The property owners "Pollack Shores Real Estate Group" who just recently sold the Arden Villas to "TH Real Estate" they've also named the estate of Armando Cabellero as defendant in the suit.
The apartment complex is liable for all damages it has allegedly caused under the Florida Wrongful Death Statute, the lawsuit charged.

I live 10 minutes away from Arden Villa and its so crazy that you covered this story. She was found in a wooded ditch area near Texas Ave in Tymber Skan. My friend is friends with Miyas family and it really hit home that this happened. The family is currently fighting for the Miya Marcano Law: prevent apartment workers and third parties from gaining access to units without probable cause to insure safety and protection. Although the family is trying to get the government´s attention to pass this law, it is becoming increasingly difficult with the lack of attention and lack of cooperation that Arden management has shown. He was completely obsessed with her and he knew of her plans to leave back to South Florida. He killed himself because not only was he guilty of the murder, but he didn’t want to own up to it.
Thankfully DeSantis has signed the Bill into law in late June 2022.

This happened in my own neighborhood. I remember her father posting on Instagram to help find her before they knew she was murdered… it’s surreal having you speak about it. We watch these videos as entertainment and informative and we become desensitized to these stories sometimes, but hearing stories from your own city is sobering.
I just watched one from my home town. I feel you.
Why wasn't he considered an immediate suspect?? 😢 He was a male colleague who was harassing her regularly despite her rejection, he was the last person known to have seen her, and her friends and family couldn't name anyone else with motive. That should make him an immediate suspect. The police could have at least asked him if he'd be willing to go with them to the station for questioning. Considering he showed up without prompt at 3 am when police were present, I think he likely would have said yes.
They did, this video doesn't show the whole body camera footage, but he said no and they have no evidence. Its easy to blame the police in hindsight but they have to follow the law and gather evidence before moving forward.

@@Mr___f Again, They did not know that at the time, the texts are creepy sure, but not illegal, and they didn't know he was the last person to enter her room at that point. Were talking about Day 1 of the investigation, its just a police response at this point, they cant just arrest him on allegations that they haven't yet followed up on.

It's difficult to wrap your head around a case like this. This girl was doing everything right to create a good life for herself. We often talk about high-risk lifestyles & being involved with the wrong crowd, but Mia wasn't into anything like that, & yet, her life was snubbed even before it had begun. RIP Mia!

You have no idea what she was actually into..and regardless it had nothing to do with the murder
If you think most cases are because the people had a "high risk lifestyle" (whatever that means) or were involved with the wrong kind of people... You obviously have no idea of what real life is. Most killers, rapists, attackers are lambda people around us. They attack people they feel an attraction to for X reason, it's completely unrelated to how the victim is living.
Which is why in most cases rapists are family members, teachers, family friends, babysitters, and such.
It's crazy that in 2022 people still can't wrap their head around that truth. Complete ignorance ? A rejection to the truth because it's too ugly ? Both ?
Either way, the fact people always try to find a logical reason to explain why _this_ particular person was attacked is why so many victims are too ashamed to speak, and it makes attacking innocents and getting away with it so much easier for the criminals.

High risk lifestyle refers to people who indulge in activities that expose them to dangerous situations regularly, like frequenting shady bars during very late hours, or having a profession like that of a sex worker (it's no coincidence that sex workers are the most victimised strata of society, by serial killers/rapists & even random criminals)
Moving with the Wrong Crowd would be hanging out with druggies &/or the ones who are involved in petty crime, most often to keep their drug habit afloat. (Just a couple of examples)
Finally, I'm a counselor with 15+yrs of experience, I treat people with addictions & help them get back into the mainstream society. i also run an NGO for the victims of child sexual abuse. So, i know what you're referring to when you say family members & neighbours etc. That is Sexual Abuse & that almost never results in homicide. That is not to say homicides do not happen within family, friends or acquaintances. You are trying to pick up one fact from a completely different criminal scenario & inserting it elsewhere to prove whatever it is that you're trying to...i suggest that, instead of making sarcastic comments, understand what's written first. In my first year of university, a girl from Bermuda was hit and killed by a car near campus. The police figured that because she was from such a small island, she didn't realize how fast cars move here in Canada and got hit because of it. It was in the first week of school too, imagine sending your child off to school in a foreign country and they come home in a box in less than a week...
They did what? Do they think cars are a rarity outside the US? How insulting!
I remember a great niece of mine asking me if we had fridges over here in Germany... But she was 8, so she is excused.

@@hafusan Perhaps do a little research before jumping to this conclusion. The speed limit in Bermuda is around 23mph due to the narrow roads. So yeah, cars in Canada (not the US as you also erroneously claimed) would be travelling very fast.
I just have to say I’m so proud of the family for keeping the pressure on that man! They didn’t just sit back, they took action!
This is the reason why I decided to buy my own apartment, I had my landlord break in without consent and then I didn't feel safe anymore to stay there. No one should have a key to your apartment, unless it's family and you gave them the keys.

It’s a shame Miya couldn’t even be safe in her own residence; I don’t know what else she could have done differently to further protect herself and I can only imagine how terrifying those last hours would have been.
Thoughts going to her family and community for the completely senseless waste of life.
That’s the scariest part to me. There’s nothing she could have done differently to protect herself. Any time a guy tries to flirt with me I’m scared what will happen when I turn them down bc it could literally mean my life.

@@Evolving.Ellie. agreed. It’s a constant balancing game of “be nice enough to not make the guy pissed off that you’re not engaging with him” and “don’t be too nice, as to draw the person’s continued attention.” And even then, you still never know how the person will react.
It's bad enough that women are forced to take additional steps toward their safety while out of the house. But we can't even apply that logic to this case... she was inside her own home. If she couldn't inherently feel safe here, then where can she? It's devestating.
I have to side with the family's lawyer on this. This creep ultimately is responsible for this murder, but it was the property's fault as well; they should never have allowed a man like this to have free access to anyone's apartments. Their utter carelessness put Miya into a situation where she had no escape from this guy.
The fact that I spoke to both of them just a day or two before this happened still gives me chills. I live in Arden Villas rn & they wouldn’t let me break my lease unless I found someone to take over even though it made me very uncomfortable to live literally doors away from the murder. I haven’t finished the video, but if you see a black & orange challenger it’s my car. The security of the complex is still terrible & the lack of contact between residents & the office is still terrible. I hope they upgrade this whole complex because there where health issues even before the Miya case. Rest Well Miya
Ladies!! If you live alone, esp in an apartment where maintenance workers or owners can have access into your apartment make sure to put on a chain lock if there isn’t one already and always keep it locked! That way they can’t just freely walk in as they please, this is heartbreaking

TY, Adrian. I followed this case when it first started, not that long ago. It always infuriates me when these type of scumbags kill themselves. I want them in court, convicted, and having to face the families of the victim, then sent to prison for life.

So sad. Not sure if you've covered the case of Sasha Samsudean, but it has so many parallels. Also happened in Orlando, FL. She came home from the bar/club and went into her apartment by herself late at night. Security guard who was on shift for the building used some kind of key card to go into her apartment later on. I read he also had some kind of criminal/mental health record that was apparently ignored by the complex he worked for.
This story hits way too close to home. Knew friends who dealt with similar issues bit I also had a creepy maintenance man in my appt building who was much older than me and would constantly make sexual advances that were rejected. He would come into my appt days before when I scheduled repairs or randomly unlock my door at times without adequate (24 hr) notice. I would sometimes come home to see that someone had looked through my personal items though I lived alone. The management didn't do anything until I had sent a total of three emails over a little under 11 mon (should have sent much more during my tenancy there) each quoting tenant rights laws and timing of illegal access with the last threatening legal action if they didn't finally take action to prevent him from continuing his habits. Only after my threat, they made him talk to management before grabbing a copy of an appt key and taking another maintenance worker with him. I left once my lease was up. Unfortunately in my life I've learned that management will protect a creep if they're a "good worker." Know your legal rights, tell your loved ones and management about it, get a deadbolt installed if you can, and get the hell out of there as soon as possible.
Ending his own life is one thing, but doing so without even disclosing where Miya was is ramping up the evil to another degree. He was already (wrongly) escaping his crimes, what use is there in hiding that information after you're gone?
RIP Miya, and I hope her law can prevent this exact kind of BS in the future.
Main reason is most likely to keep his memory alive. Most psychopaths commit crimes that bad knowing they won't survive, so they make sure it's still talked about
You should never trust anyone who works for your apartment complex. If someone comes by and says they need to make repairs, make sure you call the office to confirm this.
So there is this maintenance man here in my complex who unexpectedly knocked on my door and said he needed me to open the door so he could paint it (he works and lives here) I for one didn’t feel comfortable having my door wide open because of my small kitten I don’t feel comfortable AT ALL and I didn’t trust him anyway so I denied to open the door the condo board fined me 100 dollars!!!! 😤 and I mean I was leaving out to work also so I couldn’t stay and I wasn’t leaving my door open I don’t trust anyone
You should never trust anyone you don't know full stop. Be kind and polite, give people the benefit of the doubt by all means but never get too comfortable with them. Maybe that's just the way I am but it's kept me relatively safe so far. If anything freaks or creeps you out make sure you let someone know asap.

@@___erika Being cautious is one thing but treating people like thier fuckin criminals is what those assholes did when they shot and killed that guy for no reason. Dont think that your a good judge of character either. Jeffery Dahmers neighbors thought he was a good guy and that his apartment just smelled bad. John Wayne Gacy used to invite the police over for coffee while bodies were decomposing under his house.

Nobody should ever have the keys to your apart.ment. Nobody but family. No maintenance person should ever have keys to apartments, if so only 2 workers go into a apartment together.

Agreed. I've now heard that a lot of people change their locks once they move in, and will put the original lock back on when moving out. This seems like the safest option because this kind of access is SCARY

Usually leases have clauses that don't allow you to make any alterations to the apartment without the landlord's permission. I think you could be risking eviction for something like changing the locks without permission.
It’s definitely not something that happens in the UK either. The landlord doesn’t even enter his property without permission from the tenant.

Miya's family is very well known in the Caribbean community in South Florida and the Caribbean community as a whole. We all rallied around the family when she first went missing; sharing, posting and highlighting her case while most mainstream media outlets were obsessing over Gabby Petito's disappearance. Everyone hoped and prayed for another outcome. May she continue to rest peacefully.
Stop trying to create division. Miya's case was quite well known in the media, I had certainly heard of it, you're attempt to belittle another missing/murdered woman's case does not cast you in a good light, again stop creating division. All missing/murdered people deserve recognition but there are thousands who receive none, and some certainly less than Miya.....and Gabby.
Miya's case shook us here in the Orlando area too. Many of us here still can't believe it happened.
We heard about Miya all the way over here in the UK, People were disgusted at both hers and Gabby's untimely passings. Literally no one was paying more attention to Gabby over Miya.....

Miya barely got more than a mention, whilst the Petito case got around the clock coverage. The Washington Post even ran an article in September of 2021, stating that even those working in the media expressed concerns that the Petito case was getting too much coverage. Why do Brits always try and tell us what is happening in our country? Don't you have a record breaking knife crime wave to be worried about? Fix the issues on your side of the pond before sticking your nose into ours.

i used to work at the fire station next to this apartment complex. It was by FAR the worst apartment complex in the UCF area, i would have never let any of my loved ones stay there. Just always something shady going on there. just sad. prayers to the family, she was a beautiful young woman. RIP.
That's crazy to hear, as an ignorant coffeeman outsider who knows nothing about Florida or the area, I'd have thought it would be a great place to be for a student! I don't think I'd have personally asked about background checks for masterkey holders either.
Once her body was found I started seeing horror stories about that complex. Sad
Hi I actually live at the complex, I remember driving back from my hometown and seeing all these new crews and people crowded outside of her building, I heard her mother weeping at what I latter found out was a vigil/ search party.
I can't tell you how scared alot of people were when this happened, there was a lot of talk of refusing to pay rent, and people were already upset at management for more minor stuff like parking and trash collection. I remember a few days later someone folded the property with fliers saying how Arden Villas was responsible, and how furious we all were that the best they did was offer a grief counselor a few times a week for a while. That was when the first talks of protests and the petition started.
There was police here every day, I remember coming back from class and seeing police dogs searching every garage for any clues. I called up my parents and they immediately got me a security camera and a portable door lock. Eventually bits of news came in, like how the guy the police were after killed himself, and eventually her body. It was an awful time.
But through it all Arden just kept their damn mouths shut, they promised more security cameras, more lights, and an ACTUAL guard in the guardhouse, none of that has happened and it's been months. Recently there's been issues of people doing hit and runs with parked cars, and not enough parking spaces. Arden's response was for us to park at the planned parenthood OUTSIDE the property. This complex is a dumpster fire, and I've very much looking forward to the end of the semester so I can get the hell out of here, lease be damned. I haven't even scratched the surface of all the shady things related to this case and just the company in general. I truly hope they can get Miya's law passed, and I hope the family sues Preiss for every last cent.

Unfortunately, Miya's Law has already been significantly gutted as it works through the Florida Senate. A committee removed the background check requirement, the requirement to keep a log of who has access to master keys, and the requirement that the logs are updated annually.
This is crazy. It's crazy how many feel women dont need protection.
As an American, that's just sad, they gutted it that bad already. Expected better from the FL senate, but even here in AZ, ours disappoints too from time to time

this case hit hard. I was a student at ucf during this case and the outpouring of love and support in the community was unmatched, even if it felt like there was an unspoken agreement that it felt like a futile search. after she was found, I remember seeing endless posters to rally over the security in apartment complexes, particularly in miya's apartment complex. it was devastating. this case will never leave me and I truly hope her family finds peace.

This definitely caused a major uproar in our West Indian/Caribbean community! The way we all came and banded together to raise awareness was incredible. Just not the outcome we all hoped for 😣😔 her legacy will live on, her family is doing amazing things in her name/honour!

There needs to be something similar to two-factor authorization before any maintenance personnel are allowed into someone's apartment without that person's express permission. They should have to check in at the main office and be granted permission, and the maintenance person's name, reason for entering, and time of entry kept in a log. The idea of master cards or keys is bullsh*t if there is no oversight. Miya was at the mercy of Armando _and_ an outdated and useless security system.

Aside from anything more sinister, it's a basic breach of the tenants privacy rights.

@@FlameFlickers Even if the maintenance guy has no criminal background nobody should have a master key or be able to enter a tenant's house without permission. If the tenant lost their key then the tenant will need to pay for a locksmith and a new set of locks.

This story made many of us in the Caribbean community scared. Because sending our children and love ones off to college we would expect them to be safe even if they lived in an apartment off campus. Miya soul and story will never be forgotten. May she r.i.p❤️
You can literally say that about any family... this doesn't happen exclusively to Caribbean people.
People need castrating or put to death. Instead we send the. To jail and feed and cloth them a d keep them warm. I think the death penalty is a weird one. But some people need to be put to death or left in a room with the family

almost moved into arden villas with my fiancée, literally toured and viewed their rooms. this case occured a month later and has never ceased to sadden, shock and terrify us; especially the fact that we were likely in the vicinity of the perp. so grateful to see someone covering this.. there's wayyyy too many buried/unreported cases linked to UCF. 🙏🕊

This girl is from the island I grew up on and she disappeared on my 24th bday. It’s all everyone on this small island talked about until the devastating news. Everyone new from the very beginning who did it, it was so obvious it was the maintenance guy. Mia was so young, it’s so unfortunate how her life ended so abruptly…

My brother was murdered back in 2016 and I can appreciate when people honor a victim’s memory because it’s what I do for my brother every day. I love your videos, keep it up!

Sorry to the family for this tragic loss, this world is sick and it's getting worse. It's so important that people realize Jesus Christ is the true protector. He can arrange any circumstances, protect anyone in any situation. By living a life of sin, doing certain things, not caring, it can leave one more vulnerable spiritually. We need to pray over ourselves and family using the blood of Jesus Christ daily and get out of sin and many things in the world that actually open opens doorways to demons. Thousands of people including athiests have been taken in their spirit out of their body and seen hell. This is my area. I remember when a lot of my friends was putting up her missing photo. I didn’t know her personally but she seemed like a beautiful person with a beautiful heart. My condolences to her family and thank you for shining light on this tragic case

There was a similar case in the Orlando area involving a young woman, named Jennifer. She was a real estate agent who bought a condo in an under construction bldg. The workers were allowed to live in the bldg., they were undocumented and fairly unreliable. She started to feel insecure and anxious as these guys escalated their creepy behavior. Sure enough, one day she wasn't at work and her co workers validated that she never missed work. She was no where to be found. The cops caught a very grainy shot of some guy parking her car and walking away. Not long after, all these workers were no where to be found. There were multiple extensive searches, a nd her family posted a large reward. They did everything they could to find her. She has never been found. Her name was Jennifer Kesse. I cannot begin to imagine the constant pain her family and loved ones suffer on a daily basis. 💔

Great vid as always! I did want to point out something I noticed in the portion at 19:52. I worked in background checks for three years and it's a lot more common to have name and DOB matches across multiple people! Some names are more common than others and we had protocol whenever this sort of thing happened, usually involving calling courts and trying to match the SSN up. Just thought I'd let you know!
