This 1941 Chevy Army truck was turned into a homemade log skidder and snow plow for a guy who built log homes, before eventually being abandoned where it died out in the woods. Ben with 406 Garage decided he had to have it, so came up with a plan to bring in Tumalo Transport's lowboy truck and telehandler to pull it out of the woods, load it on the trailer, and haul it back to 406 Garage
I really want to see that military tow truck in action
That would be a gem of a wilderness recovery rig .
I would to
My Dad would have loved to watch this video, He used the same style ex WW2 truck to run the power lines from Harihari to Haast, South Westland, New Zealand back in the late 50's early 60's
Vintage Dodge Power Wagon! Oh, a thing of beauty and a joy forever.
Those old surplus Army trucks helped build the country after the war. My neighbor had one in Lake Jackson TX for moving houses.
If you ever wanted to see a military vehicle in action, you should have seen the one my father had on his farming action. It was called a half-track. If had large tires on the front and was driven by a long set of tracks on the rear. But the best part was the 20 pipe boom he constructed on the front. He was in a field next to his shop and needed the lift. So I, a 12 yr old was asked to go back to the shop and drive it to the field. I started to turn into the field and saw my dad frantically waving his arms and screaming at me to stop. He was pointing in the air when finally stopped and looked up at the high voltage line I almost tore out. This vehicle reminded of that incident in 1952.
Such a cool old truck, the Ingenuity of the old timers is absolutely amazing. Good driving Casey. 😊😊
Great job everyone, and great adventure
Would love to see this old gal repaired and put back into decent condition. So many have been cut up for scrap now. These trucks made WWII's victory possible.
???
@Richard Cline I too would like to know what the new owner plans for it. 👍🛻 Hopefully not to rot out in the yard.
@@sandymj3w633 it was my impression that the owner wanted to make it some form of "yard art". If that's the case it was better off left where it was!
The Adventure of the Road Warrior - this US Army Veteran now at the Oregon Rest Home - Very Cool Ben & Casey
Hey that thing looks like it could drive out of there with a little love! lol That said, I think most of us would enjoy a video on what it takes to make it run and maybe you would get to drive it around the farm a little!
Wow that's a cool old military truck
Casey, I discovered your channel today...what a trip! You have an incredible skill set, whether positioning ropes for a rescue or operating heavy machinery or doing DIY projects on your own vehicles. You would enjoy meeting Chris Guins (UA-cam channel Lets Dig18) from eastern North Carolina. Chris also has that eye for angles when setting grade for a pond dam or driveway, maintains his own equipment, and loves rescuing old machinery and getting it back in service. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Cheers from NC.
I watch let's dig18 too. Good stuff
That’s some cool old iron. Someone needs to build that into a off-road recovery vehicle.
Merry Christmas!!!
Casey should take it make it a tilt tray
Now that’s what I want for my property
Freaking cool
As always, thanks for a bit of fun. Never fails.
Heck yeah that’s pretty darn cool now you need to do a will it start video!
I hope that he plans on restoring this wonderful piece of equipment.
I owned a 46' chevy PU for many years when I was young, It's cool to see a WWII Chevy, Treat it well and it will take you anywhere.
Damn they made good tyres back in the day still air in em
Boys and their toys, and having fun doing it. And having a laugh with each other. Can't get any better! 😆
I hope someone can get it running
Thats a cool rig and looks pretty rust free. Dont let Backyard Alaskan see that! Id love to see it run and drive!
Looks like a Chevy G506 1.5 ton 4x4. Awesome trucks - tens of thousands of them were sent Lend-Lease to Russia in WWII.
That looks like something out of Backyard Alaskan row of trucks.
These GMC trucks were evident in New Zealand following the end of WW2. There was a company, (Gillies) at Seaview, Hutt City
who bought and sold many former US Military trucks and machinery. In my home town Neil Mouat, a contractor, had a fleet of GMC dump trucks, left hand drive, some with tandem rear duals but mostly with a single rear axle such as this truck you are recovering here. Bob NZ.
A guy was converting them by turning the driver compartment so it became a sort of all terain crane. He added a footwell on the back of the cab.
They were hauling logs out of the bush where I lived and taking them to the mill.
Nice to try to get running and driving around your area
What a score!
That is one cool old truck
What an awesome old truck. Take care of that beauty
Way COOL Old Truck 👍👍👍
That great old truck looks like Trail Mater. amazing
Amazing video!👍😎 I am amazed at how many different types of equipment that you know how to operate! Lucky Ben has you for a friend 😎 Keep up the great work and stay safe out there!❤️🙏
Thank you for the video, Casey and Ben. Merry Christmas to you and your families.
Melving Old Style Garage would be interested on one of those to match the one he (Tow Mater) already owns and is competing the Wrecker Games! Looks like a twin brother! Amazin it still rolls down the road.
Awesome dude
Neat old Chevrolet G506. A 1.5 ton 4x4 produced from 1940 - 45. Very common to find old military rigs with booms and wild setups for getting work done. Nice to see it rescued. I’ve got 3 of these truck up here in Alaska. Several videos on them.
Outstanding video! I grew up with a truck like this (Dodge Weapons Carrier, WWII). Dad, a Forward Aerial Recon photographer/,waist door gunner-B25s w Patton in N Africa) builtvit up for our Farm in SE Idaho. Dad put the larger Ambulance engine in it and a dump box . The front 25ft boom could be 'shipped' down the Rt side for highway use.
I'd love to have a truck like that with a Cummins motor in it, matte black cab. Total mad max vibes.
WW2 Military trucks are getting to be better than money in the bank in UK. The value is going up, they ain't making any more.
Fantastic move Casey and team. Scenery was lovely. Have a Great day. Peace Out
That Old Truck is A BEAST , BUT Way Cool
Looks like fun
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY AND HAVE A GREAT NEW YEAR
You got a little bit of work ahead of you on this project. Looking forward to the watching the build!
This one is just going to be yard art... For now.
@@CaseyLaDelle We're still looking forward to the rebuild
@@CaseyLaDelle if you decide to part this out I need a transfer case.
Holy moly that thing is flying together... How many Central Oregon shops are involved in this thing now?
Looks like Shane did a killer job on that exhaust..
Hopefully that transmission has all it's gears 😂🤣
All of them lol
What I liked the most, was that cool tow thingamajig on the pickup truck.
Good work
great watching two older guys help, as im 76, but with 22 broken bones including my damn neck which won't turn.
Its built to run duals ,front and back
Holy Crap! I want that truck!
6BT Cummins, Allison automatic, some big ass transfer case, 9:00-16 tires, etc.,etc.,etc.
5.9 Cummins old 12 valve and a 48re, the Allison will not take near as much.
Nice find there Casey!!
Nice job getting it done. Definitely a cool piece of equipment
I LOVE the looks of that ole style cab on the truck!
What a gem.
That was a really cool recovery!
Good job of filming and editing
awesome score mate, looks like a fun truck to have and build back up
I've never seen a flat deck that moves the axles that's amazing great video
They are made my Landoll.. they're handy little trailers to have
@@hughstephenson2957 nope, that one is a Traileze. My old one was a Trail King, but they're also made by four or five other manufacturers as well.
@@CaseyLaDelle I think Landoll started it.
The others have upped the game!
Money makers in the right market. Lots of recovery companies making "extra" money moving rental equipment, the rental companies can't keep up with deliveries themselves.
@@haroldphipps3457 yes, Landoll invented the sliding axle trailer. I've owned quite a few different types over the years and honestly, Landoll is one of the worst ones out there. They are like a disposable camera, use them for 5 years and throw them away because they're junk after that. Trail King and Traileze blow them away in every category
When I first found your UA-cam channel I thought you were a total dork just like me watching you in action by yourself most of the time you reminded me of myself and I all three of us I have total respect for your endeavor and your enthusiasm especially your total honesty and product review And recovery systems which do not always work as planned but I truly admire you especially after your UA-cam review update on how UA-cam works my children have ordered me a GoPro because there is so many strange things that happen at random in my life mostly entertaining overcoming challenges with the simplest answers.
Thank you Casey For your true honesty and integrity I really appreciate that. If I ever cross paths in Oregon I will look you up.
Eric
That's too awesome 👌 the recovery, video and the duty of your truck keep up the good work and as always be safe 👍 👏 😀 👌
That truck is kool 👍
Merry christmas an happy new year
That was a different kind of tow that put a good test on your wheel lift!
Yes it did!
@@CaseyLaDelle should make that your next tow truck
Great video guys, had to sub! Of course I'd give my eye teeth for the Dodge but glad someone is going to give her the tlc she deserves & restore her, can't wait to follow along on that. All the best in 2022
5 star and we would still watch all your videos whether you charge or not
Another amazing video
I hope you saved the license plate off that truck and hung it somewhere in your shop that would be kind of pretty cool
You probably could have put a boat tank on the hood and drove it out. That old iron is hard to kill. And it would have made a great will it start video. 20 years isn't that long ago by the way time seems to fly by anyway.
I sold my old 37ft 5thwheel to a recovery man in arkanasa .
He does recoveries for the national forest . He used a skidsteer to get the 5thwheel out of my forest trail .
It was wild .
I had a short wheel base truck pull it to my land. Then built my cabin .
We could not get it out then lol.
He done a good job . 👏
That truck could be used in a Steven King or a mad max movie no changes needed
sweet hes gonna git a youtube to, totally gotta let us know when its up cause im diffnelty gonna sub to him
If you guys don’t rebuild that tow truck, you should give Rory a call. I bet he’d love to have that truck!
This must be Merlin’s twin truck I hear you talking about from a video of the wrecker games.
That was pretty cool
Another difficult job( to me ) , look somewhat easy thanks to your skill level Casey. Un trabajo fácil para usted!
Bran new lawn art!
Let me tell you a little story about using the outriggers as a brake. I worked for Hawthorne Machinery in San Diego in the late 80s. (Caterpillar Dealer) I was in Field service. This particular day we only needed one service truck, I left mine in the yard, and went with a fellow mechanic in his service truck. We had just set an engine in a 657 scraper. We used the contractor's 30 ton Pettybone yard crane to set it with. The parking brake was not working, so we were told just use an outrigger. We were done with the job and I was sitting in the passenger seat in the cab of the other mechanic's service truck. I needed something out of the box over the wheels, so I went out and got whatever it was, and climbed back into the cab. As soon as I sat down something hit the truck. I looked out the mirror, and found the Pettybone crane had hit the truck right where I was not more than 10 seconds before. The outrigger had bled off, and the crane had rolled across the yard about 200 feet until it hit the truck.
Casey, show the man that owns that Giehl this story. It is just pure luck that I was not killed that day. Some things are important, and a parking brake is one of those things.
I agree with this 100% never use outriggers for anything other than what they’re intended for. Unknowingly damaging it while using it as a brake could result in it failing under load. Besides, brakes aren’t a very hard or expensive fix at all…
I think you should make an Off Road Recovery vehicle with it
Good fun entertainment on a lazy day Boxing Day recovering from Christmas Day. Thanks.
A Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones
Should make that your next tow truck
Git R Dun
Have a Great Day 👍
those lifts are amazing, largest piece iv hauled i belive is my 1952 chevy 6400 that i hauled from bonanza to mccloud
Always been a big fan of military equipment in military vehicles did you see who actually moved this vehicle was really awesome I always wondering who moved the truck from the up of David's loop by where I live
That's a sweet power wagon 🤩
Not a power wagon, it's a Chevy
@@CaseyLaDelle saw one by IH years ago too.
Axles are surprisingly dainty.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Used to be a lot of that stuff around here (N end of Idaho) logging "jammers" and other uses. One guy I used to know had a GI half track. I don't think he used it much
Ben reminds me of Jetski Jimmy
nothing makes more friends than owning a telehandler if you think owning a trailer made you friends its next level
That is a wet dream for Paul from FabRats.
1979, is that the same year that the Golden Nugget ran last?
Wouldn't that have been a nice ride for the wrecker games? 🤣
There’s one of these trucks at a WWII era tungsten mine I’ve hiked to a couple times, the mine was abandoned after the war. If anyone even wanted to get it out of there now they’d have to do road work, part of the dirt road fell off. You’d either have to fill it in or cut further into the hill. The truck burned when a wildfire came through 6 or 7 years ago.
Looks like something Backyard Alaskan would drag home lol
Una Joyita, realmente..!!..ji ji j iji..Saludosss
You should build that! I just happens to see one kick some A** the past few days😂😂😂. I know a guy who could help 😂.
Thanks for the video and merry Xmas
OMG your daughter is going to be so happy ,you found a unicorn 😂
I'd guess those telereachers are all build similar , so the parkingbrake is a disc brake in the driveline and you can put these hydraulic driven vehicles in drive (and drive) with the parking brake on !! , we use to rewire the handbrake switch so it would break the power to the drive selector , and it would never "eat" its handbrake again
Your comment about the View of the Cascade Mountains that was not available reminds me of a segment of an old Country Syndicated show Hee-Haw. Archie Campbell would pretend to cut Roy Clark's head. Archie would go into his That's Good, That's Bad routine.
When you get with Ben anything can happen. A sweet adventure.
Watch out world. Casey’s got a battering ram
