Usually they contain around 25% water or less but there are some special emulsifiers that enable the creation of w/o emulsions with low oil inputs. Please also watch this video: ua-cam.com/video/toh9bx7kjwM/v-deo.html this one has 80% water phase but is still w/o! Happy formulating!
No - an emulsifier without something to hold inside will destabilise your product. Without water you are making a soft balm, so avoid water completely if that is the case. Hi Belinda, can you use Sorbitan Laurate (and) Polyglyceryl-4 Laurate (and) Dilauryl Citrate in place of the Aracell? Also, this would be a nice facial balm for oil dry facial skin? I don't use water based moisturizers but I do mist my face with rose water before applying my balms. I break out when I use water based moisturizers, so prefer balms.
This is an ointment, it is too heavy for a face cream - you would be better with a w/o cream instead, try this video: ua-cam.com/video/AUaXs-77rVw/v-deo.html You could not use that emulsifier, it forms o/w emulsions. Hey Belinda, quick question. Where did you get your Arlacell 1689. I have looked at every supplies store in Aus and I can't seem to find it. Is it sometimes know as something different?

It depends what you are using it for. If purely as a wax rice bran wax is good - but if using it for low HLB properties (like beeswax) you'd be better using a glyceryl stearate or sorbitan stearate. They help stabilise this type of product and also provide a softer spreadability.
Thank you for this idea, we’ll see if it fits into our video schedule. In the meantime, you can learn with us. Please contact us for course information and which course is going to best suit you: info@personalcarescience.com.au

We have a video on stabilising particles with different types of gums: ua-cam.com/video/Mce63s9UGwk/v-deo.html but this suits water based products. With balms, you need to use oil compatible rheology modifiers for stability and it depends on what other ingredients are in your formula and company philosophy as to which materials you can use and choose. We can provide individual advice if you purchase consulting time here: personalcarescience.com.au/Advice/Advice-2046/ but we do need specifics of your formula and philosophy to advise properly.
I love your videos, thank you :) I have been looking around the internet for a substitution for Arlacell 1689? Do you know, if there is another suitable W/O emulsifier? I come from Denmark.
There are several out there - depends who you can get materials from. Arlacell 1689 is a Croda Material; it is a low HLB liquid blend of emulsifiers that is very effective for stabilising w/o emulsions without increasing viscosity. Please find a local supplier who can provide a similar material. You can also check this list: createcosmeticformulas.com/IngredientSuppliers/IngredientSuppliers-897/
A balm is a totally anhydrous (without water) product, usually harder than an ointment. An ointment is usually w/o with a low water or glycerin content and remains a semi-solid consistency and is more pliable than a straight balm.

Can you please provide the measurements for each ingredient that you used? Please and thanks !

Hi Belinda. I know you state a preservative isn't needed for this formula, but would it be okay to add one anyway?
Preservatives are controversial for consumers and can increase irritation/sensitivities - why add one if you don’t need one?
So water in oil emulsions are ones that contain very little water? Thank you♡
Usually they contain around 25% water or less but there are some special emulsifiers that enable the creation of w/o emulsions with low oil inputs. Please also watch this video: ua-cam.com/video/toh9bx7kjwM/v-deo.html this one has 80% water phase but is still w/o! Happy formulating!
Can shea butter go grainy in emulsions whilst cooling?
Yes it can. Belinda has a video on fixing grainy butters & balms: ua-cam.com/video/RCSlVGffr9o/v-deo.html
Hello Belinda, Could I add an alcohol extract in place of the glycerin extract?
Thank you
Lorraine
In the same small amount in the formula, yes.
Could I add the emulsifier even if I do not add any water based ingredient, just to increase stability (heat/cold)?
No - an emulsifier without something to hold inside will destabilise your product. Without water you are making a soft balm, so avoid water completely if that is the case. Hello Belinda, please can this be used for a hair balm
Potentially yes- it would need to be more viscous to suit hair applications but potentially yes, it would be like a balm/soft pomade.
Hello. Can this be used on the face? :) is the end result greasy ?
This is intended as a barrier ointment for example on very dry or damaged skin or even baby’s bottoms. It would be too greasy for the face.
Hello Belinda, I already have ointment oil but i want to turn this oil into balm. what formula i should follow? Thanks

Can u explain what is meant by W/O and O/W ??
