What I took away from this video:
    - Don't let the media consume you, it will portray beliefs to you again and again of a "beta-oriented" persona of manliness
    - Do not attach yourself to the different emotions that you experience throughout the day, instead, experience the emotion and move forward. Do not be emotional because then, your emotions will begin to control and direct your actions and if your thoughts or emotions control your actions, your emotions determine the trajectory of your life.
    - Do not listen to music 24/7, it will distract you from doing simple things or take away your complete focus on your intentions, even things as simple as working out.
Human beings were not built to multi-task. Many people don't experience 'flow' or being in the zone because of little distractions such as music or notifications.
    - You need to stop looking up to people who you don't want to be like, look at the archetype of exactly the type of person you wish to be and mimic their values. Jesus Christ is one example. In short, Find a person you admire, determine why you admire them, and adopt what they are doing that makes them admirable.
    - Many people have anxiety because of something going on in their lives. It could be an unethical job, unhealthy relationships or even an inconsistent diet. Do not buy into the fad that being anxious is normal, do not purchase the medicine and instead be a real man who can learn to control their own emotions.
One thing I've noticed myself doing with many YT videos, lectures, podcasts, or readings that I enjoy is that at the end of the piece, I don't reflect on exactly what the author/speaker's message is. Starting today, I'm going to identify exactly what's important at the end of each of these videos for myself to learn and actually apply it to my own life- if not the very least recognize what I'm doing wrong in my daily life.
    Thanks so much Eli!

I am fascinated by your comment on music. I've often thought about this before as well and thought I was the only one. Not much discussion about this topic out there. I love music, but sometimes it feels to me like it can become just another dopamine addiction. I try to go several days in a row without listening to any music once in a while just to reset my brain, and I always find that I enjoy the music far more after a temporary break from it.

One suggestion for listening to music, is to listen to music how they did in back in the day. I.e. Put an album on, and sit/lie down and actually listen to it all the way through, and actually experience the music.
Of course, it's technically more time- consuming than listening to music as you go about your day, especially if you are a musician that aims to listen to new music consistently for inspiration. But just throwing that suggestion out there anyway.
Although, if I had a car I would definitely blast my music every time I drive. In fact, I often fantasise about it (but not financially wise for me to get a car when I don't need it). I can also understand why people might want to play music at the gym, especially because a lot of gyms play really shitty music that is not exactly conducive to getting you in the mood to fuck shit up. Having said that, I've actually been having better workouts without my own music playing. It seems I don't get as fired up, but instead lift in a calmer fashion, leading to better technique as well as not feeling as burnt out afterwards.
      P. S. Gojira and Leprous are the best bands around right now. Followed by Tesseract, Mastodon and Parkway Drive.

10:00 I agree with your sentiment. I'm an avid musician myself, but I'm one of the few people at my school who got rid of their earbuds. I don't listen to music nearly as much. It's a distraction from the task at hand. Music is a powerful experience, why waste it and be desensitized to it by having a playlist constantly playing in your ears. You lose touch with reality and live in your own world, where you get too comfortable. Good video as always

I am a musician, and I agree with your message regarding the overstimulation of music. People listen to it constantly...in the hallway at school, in the car, at the grocery store, at the gym, at parties, etc. And important to note: the music is coming from a digital device, not an actual person playing music in the real world. Most pop, rap, hip-hop and even new country music has a message that promotes nihilism, hedonism and other degenerate lifestyle habits, not to mention the music itself is produced in such a way that triggers the reward feedback loop in the brain, like drugs, sugar, or pornography.

I do need to be less emotional. When you say that about music, I'm torn because that's my passion and one of the gifts I have to the world, but I must also find that balance of stoicism in my daily life, while also leaving some moments to my gift. Tbh I'm getting tired of obsessing over becoming a "real man". It's starting to feel negative and forced. I feel like it's coming from a belief of 'I'm not good enough so I have to change myself in order to fit all these expectations'. That might even be true, maybe I do have to change a lot about myself in order to be happier, but all this pressure to be something different is getting me down. And what makes it even more difficult is that now I feel like I'm not even allowed to feel down about it. I should just deal with it and work harder, because I'm a man and men shouldn't be weak, right. Man... I don't really know why this video is having an opposite effect on me today. The videos usually make me feel motivated and encouraged.

I think the main point is to be true to yourself. It's just that with all this social conditioning, it can be really hard to, for instance, be assertive when in your heart it feels like the right thing to do. Like, how fucked is it that so many guys, myself included, find it so damn hard just to talk to a girl. This ain't normal.
And, of course, supressing emotion is not healthy. But in my opinion, there is a time and a place. If you need to cry, wait until you are alone in your room if you can. The world doesn't need more Justin Trudeaus.

The best way to sum up a man in one paragraph. Let me try. A man is a stoic. He doesn't allow his emotions to determine his decisions. He keeps himself healthy and fit inorder to take care of his family and those weaker than him. If there is a problem he fixes it, he does not complain about it. He occupies himself in a meaningful discipline and seeks to enrich the world with his work. He has a woman who is intelegent, beautiful and sexy, and is somebody who he wishes to make a family with someday. He teaches and diciplines his offspring so that they become stronger than he was. He dies peacefully knowing that his life on this earth was well spent.

In my own opinion, women have made men weak. By growing up with only a mother myself I see where she would try to make me submissive. I understand respecting her but she made me feel like it was wrong to shout or be aggressive. This would allow her to control me better like she did my dad, who I bearly even look up to because he always did what she said and couldn't function properly without her, he is also an idiot. That made me weak as a child. But now that I am 17 I am working on becoming stronger as a man.

Man is the most complicated and misunderstood creation next to the woman.
Noone other than the man in the moment knows what he feels and is adapting to. His experiences are objected by others, he is ridiculed and berated, and he must still find the strength to hold on and go further.
His life expectancy is low, his debts are high, his time is short and his vision is long. He holds the X and the Y chromosomes, and his daughter is a piece of him for another man to repeat the cycle.
After Dad dies, we all dream of him over and over again.

Self reflection : dont let your emotions control you, and turn the direction of your life.
When i feel sad, i have to bounce back and go on, when i feel anger i have to take a step back and let it pass. I can't let jt guide my decisions and my life relationships.
    Focus when doing shit.
The anxiety i feel is probably because of my relationship with my mom. I can't be hating her, blaming her or being angry at her. That only worsens the problem. I forgive her for imperfections she raised me with and im not going to fight with her, or get angry when she or the situation provokes me to
I have to be kind and loving with her yet not let walk over me or insult me.

I fully agree with your statement about music. It is the most powerful tool to control the emotions of the blind masses. I use music very conservatively. Mostly to relax for an hour or set the mood for reading or meditation but in the gym its podcasts or audiobooks and almost no music

In Digital Minimalism, one of the things Cal Newport talks about is the importance of solitude. Which he defines as something like time without influence from other minds. In other words, spend time alone, and don't think you always have to be playing music or even listening to an audio book. Of course, listening to audio books is a good thing and is a more efficient way for most of us to read. But there is something about going for a walk, or just sitting in your room, and not needing any kind of stimulation that can be very beneficial. I mean earphones are only a recent invention.

I agree with your opinion on music. We truly cannot multitask, but instead we switch tasks rapidly. We can definitely hear the music while giving something else our 100% concentration but you won't be hearing or enjoying the music 100%. It's just noise at that point. If you are listening to the music with enough concentration to enjoy it then it will be subtracting from any other task you have going on in that moment. It really is just a distraction and it will do more harm than good when abused.
I personally love music but i listen to it when i'm in the right state of mind, with high quality headphones, when i can relax and devote my attention towards the music. When i am in that state though, the emotion of the music can influence my own emotions and state of mind so choosing what type of music you listen to is very important. Thanks again for the video brother.

Great video man I agree and as for the music I think what you mean is people shouldn't use it as an escape from something they don't want to confront or just allow themselves to be so caught up in the songs that it literally dictates their lives. Of course music can and will shift your mood but if you're self aware enough you won't allow it to alter your character in any way and you'll remain grounded while still being able to experience emotion from it. Also since it it so widely accepted I think it makes it that much easier to fall prey to it just like alcohol. I am a musician/ sound designer & now that I'm older I have learned to just appreciate music for the art form that it is without allowing myself to be swayed by any type of emotion the music is emitting. I just enjoy it and then that's that the song is over. It's very much like paintings to me you view the picture and think for yourself what the artist was trying to convey through it and you appreciate it then move on. Alot of people might not even be aware that they can do that but I appreciate your observation though stay up bro!

I'm a music producer and i make and produce music for a living. I can tell you right off the bat that people listen to too much music, like they are addicted to cocaine. The best producers work with artists and corporations/brands to "hypnotize" and keep you under their influence for as long as possible. Because of the internet, attention is everything for artist so the longer you listen the better. Music has become less spiritual and meaningful. Its been watered down to BS and people are overdosing w/out realizing. I love *creating* (key word) music as I feel in flow and purpose. Too much consumption of music, such as mainstream suggests, will lead you to becoming a goddamn zombie. Be aware of its effects and you will be more in control of your state... that being said, too much of anything will kill you! cheers and thanks for the dope video Elisha lol

Such a good point regarding music! I've had the exact same thoughts, and I've been told I'm being a dick for it as well haha.
Music definitely has its place, as a piece of art to be enjoyed and appreciated. Most often though, it's a form of escapism, humming away in the background while you're taking a shower, running, whatever, not even appreciated. Many people just use music to escape from their thoughts, and I always feel like telling people like that to start practising some mindfulness and become a bit more self-aware.
Women like that are also a bit of a turn-off for me. It just screams "I'm willfully ignoring glaring issues in my life."

To have a higher chance on cultivating masculinity, it's better to be a somewhat of a loner and get own understanding of manhood from personalities of the past. Because most of the society radiates with femininity and the best possible way to not be affected is to avoid it and surround yourself with masculine role models.

Love your take on music. I come from a household where there are 4 violinists (my 3 sons and wife) and we regularly go to classical concerts, yet we do NOT have background music in our household. One does not see elite sportsman we earphones sticking in their heads. If it really helped then we would see Olympians competing with music as sport is big business for the successful few.
Music has its place but should not be put on a pedestal, sometimes less is more.

My older brother had always been my example of masculinity. I have no dad, only my mom and him. He's always been shy insecure and constantly angry at the world. He bullied me for being chubbier then him and never let me bring my friends over to my house let alone my girlfriends. When we got in fights he would always go for my broken nose or my nuts and I would be too scared of hurting him because I am larger than him and he actually tried to kill me once. I have a scar on my right shoulder from that one time. Weeks after my birthday we got in a fight again. I was too afraid to hurt him because he was my brother and I love him, and also because I was scared. He had no sympathy for me. After a year of taking anabolic steroids he has gotten toned up. Nothing major in size only shape. He tried lifting me up and throwing me around. As a boxer I knew to keep my distance and find opportunities but I could bring myself to hurt him. He left me bruised and with nose even more broken than it had already been for years. After finally getting a girlfriend (that looks like a guy) and after that fight he walks around like a tough guy happy at life while I constantly contemplate suicide and am haunted by the failures of my past. Needless to say he brings his girl to the house every day. My mom doesn't like her and I don't care I just find her annoying and an attention seeker. He always makes me feel lesser and worthless. The insecurities he grew up with he passed down to me now that we are older. And all the friendly, vim and vigorous masculine energy I had he enjoys now. I always ask myself how and why god would allow this kind of injustice. Sure he was bullied, and suffered in his own ways, but so did I and I tried to help him because he's my brother. Our entire family sees me as a failure and I feel unworthy to live every single day. I try to explain these things to people but they say It's wrong of me to blame my brother. I feel betrayed and above that I feel angry as hell. The discipline I once had was somehow removed from me and transferred to him but why?? Why would god(s) allow that sort of evil person to get away with this? I am in anguish and I'm lost. I need help.

i dont think music is necessarily a problem, its a correlation but definitely not a causation. there is such a thing as listening to music in a stoic manner, being able to feel/observe but not necessarily invest. it provides an escape especially for something like a 9-5, im sure it can ruin peoples lives but so can things like a simple alcohol addiction or even a relationship that can turn sour. actual musicianship is a form of mental entrainment and it can take years of training to be proficient, from anything to any one instrument to something like audio engineering. but I totally understand what your getting at

Elisha i agree with almost everything said in this video. Im still in highschool in what would be senior year there in the states. My trouble is when putting into practice this type of thinking because of the huge amount of Femenine men and Masculine women around me. I am not saying this is something bad but just simply that when i propose or even touch the topic of gender roles the femenism wave comes at me like fucking fire. What I am saying, how is that a person stands up with thus view in a society that punish you for even trying to practice it. Please make a video in how to be a man part 2 discussing this topic, because its been a while since i started trying out all that you propose but when people start talking me about this philosophy they throw me a type of femenist proselitism. HELP!

I'm not sure if I would call it ,"being emotional," but what you mean is when someone has no control over his/her emotions. And I agree that makes you weak. You are not in control, you are just reacting to your environment, you are just behaving like an animal. Still, for me, "being emotional" means someone who allows himself to feel emotions. There are extremes where you don't control your emotions, but I also think being able to show your emotions is a kind of strength. If you can show the world your sadness or anger, you are putting yourself on the line and letting people know who you truly are. And while I say that, I also don't see a rational argument as to why emotions are good. They really are more of a problem than a blessing. Unless you begin thinking about what emotions could make you do. Like love would make you be with your wife and children, which would raise the chances of survival of your offspring, leading to the continuation of the species. Anger could make you change something. Fear would keep you away from danger... but while they may be helpful at times, most of the time they make you unproductive.
