Wait, are you just very good at relative pitch? I can hear a riff in one key and then sing the riff over any key but I can’t do it with no reference to start. I guess I need remedial ear training!
No - I’m singing the note and trying to think of whatever chords could fit under it.. it’s more about learning what that note feels like when harmonized with different chords.

I definitely don’t have perfect pitch, but I’ve played that riff a million times so I can sing it easily.
