I was thinking the same, but it was prob hard to figure it out because it was night. If it was daylight Im 99% sure the driver would go right.
SUV probably didn't see the plane until it hit them. It's not like they would've been expecting something to land behind them, and with no other traffic near there's no reason to be checking the rearviews. That and planes don't exactly have horns, and even if the engine was running, again, that's not the kind of thing any driver would expect so they would just be confused on where a strange noise started coming from.

Far too many drivers seem to think that the response to anything is hit the brakes. This is definitely one of those situations where the driver should absolutely not have hit the brakes and really should’ve hit the accelerator instead.
That may be true but why are you bringing it up here. After all, I doubt if anyone on the planet would hit the brakes if they noticed that they were about to be rear-ended. And in this case the guy in the SUV did not hit his brakes until after he had already been struck by the wing of the plane and at this point accelerating would have done nothing at all since the plane was already spinning at this point and the plane's nose was going to slam into the SUV no matter what. The time to accelerate would have been before the impact even occurred but unfortunately most drivers are pretty oblivious to what’s going on behind them most of the time. It's just the pilots back luck that he came in behind the one guy on the freeway who was actually doing the speed limit. That plane came in with no flaps - as you would have to with no power - which means he was going at least 85mph and the SUV was likely doing about 65mph. This means that even if the SUV driver had seen the plane in his mirror right after it touched down and he immediately hit the gas he would likely not have been able to accelerate away fast enough to avoid the impact and resultant crash.

Not to often your checking your review for a plane, and even if the driver had seen it, they may have been to stunned to react, it was fairly fast.
It was literally in its blindspot up until the moment of impact. My mirrors definitely don't point upwards. Plus most people are used to seeing cars (and rarely motorcycles).

@RussOlson-nk3wc my car has some great road soundproofing but still . . . Have u ever been next to a single prop while it's running . . . It ain't exactly the quietest thing. Also soundproofing in regards to engine is for the engine. They don't soundproof the entire car or else u wouldn't hear someone honk at u . . . And that prop is definitely louder than a car horn that close. Hence why headphones are worn to talk above prop noise. That ain't no luxury SUV that I recognize either so I doubt they have an amazing soundproofing in there

If the driver had been an observant driver checking the rearview mirror every 7 seconds then they could so easily have gone a little faster to prevent the plane from crashing into them.

@@BLink2fu as a UPS driver it's actually check mirrors every 3-5 seconds, fun fact the spot in which we see in focus or most clearly is less than a inch, everything else is slightly out of focus.

Considering the plane was likely not visible below the roofline until the last second probably only gave the driver about 2-3 seconds to recognize that there's a freaking plane in his rearview and get out of the way. I don't think anyone would have avoided that, regardless of how attentive they are

The pilot tried to balance from hitting the guardrail and the vehicle ahead of him. The driver in the suv had no idea of what was going on. But had they knew about the plane, they would have had plenty of room on their right to avoid a collision is what I see in this video.

Really? He only had three seconds to react, hardly enough time, to see it, figure out what it was and what is the proper reaction. We are not hard wired to speed up for planes, or even check our review for them.

I can picture the pilot standing on those brakes trying to 'body english' just a little more out of them in order to avoid the car, but then just barely tapped that SUV. @@crappyslippers6917 I often use headphones while driving, yet I'm more aware of my surroundings than 90% of dimwits I see on the road. I check my mirrors every few seconds and when turning I make sure there's no bicycle, pedestrian, etc.

Nice to see an entire comment section full of people who have been in this exact scenario and reacted perfectly to something that no regular driving would have been staring backwards on the highway to see or have any inclination of what is going on, thereby drastically reducing any possible reaction time or critical thinking that would occur in the all of three seconds the driver had to react.
Sometimes the news is just there to spread rage bait, sometimes the public does their job for them by just attacking whoever they deem at fault (with little to no context for the incident) without taking a moment to realize that we're all just human, and for goodness sake, everyone here made it out fine. Everyone here acted in their best instincts and it saved lives. Just be happy once.

No way the Driver did not see plane coming, planes are loud as well, think Driver may have froze up or somthing, probably couldn't react fast enough. Or was probably just overwhelmed by the site and froze up.
What it was, was that there was an overpass right ahead so the pilot had no choice but to land. Could not of went a little further up.

The SUV getting hit was inevitable because the driver needed to _accelerate_ to make more room for the faster landing airplane.
No human driver in that split second situation is going to accelerate for any reason...

The driver saw the plane, you can watch in slow motion just before impact the driver hit brakes to insure a rear end. If the driver had not seen the plane before hitting them, would they still hit brakes going down the road? NOT. The time it takes to push the brake could as easy been used to speed up or move over.

no ..it was dark , the angle & at that speed wouldn’t have been much reaction . you can see the cars behind it didn’t realize til last minute but were able to stop since it was in front of them

The pilot didn't slow the airplane up before landing. With full flaps, an airplane can get slower than the flow of traffic, less than 60mph. At that speed, the cars will be approaching the airplane coming out of the sky and presumably slow down and avoid it.

Given there were about 4 seconds from the time where plane was low enough to be seen in a vehicle's rear view mirrors at the video's 0:02 point to where its starboard wing tagged the SUV at the 0:06 point, unless you are by chance looking at the mirror at that exact second you won't see it & by the time you think "Is that an airplane?" it's already hit your tailgate.

And this ladies and gents is why you should be glancing in your mirrors every few seconds. If the driver had, he likely would’ve seen the plane and been able to move over so it could have had a smooth landing. Not saying it’s the drivers fault by any means, just that this could’ve had an even better ending with just a bit more awareness.
