Reading & Northern 425: The Mountain Top Limited

- Since 2014, the Rotary Club of Mountain Top sponsored steam trips using Reading & Northern 425 to pull an excursion from Mountain Top, Pennsylvania to Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania and return. These excursions were one of the few times steam would run over a large portion of the Lehigh Line traveling through the scenic Lehigh Gorge.
After a three-year hiatus, the excursions once again continued in 2022 after not operating since 2019. The excursion also marked Reading & Northern 425's return to service after a long winter and spring of maintenance. After a spring and summer filled with multiple excursions utilizing recently-restored Reading 2102, it was a welcome return seeing the mighty, blue Pacific storming up and down the Pocono Mountains.
On this day, 425 pulled a 10-car excursion consist with former Delaware Lackawanna & Western and Reading Company coaches. The locomotive also sported a beautiful Southern Pacific 6 Chime which sounded excellent echoing in the mountains. So sit back, relax, and enjoy mountain railroading with Reading & Northern's iconic Pacific on The Mountain Top Limited.

Nice video, Mark! While it's sad that this is 425's last year of operation before her flue time expires, hopefully it won't be too long before she thunders down the line again someday. Plus, we've got 2102 to fill in, which is absolutely awesome.

Thanks man! I think I have to disagree with you on that one. To me, 2102 is just the wow factor of how is this engine running and how incredible it is. 425 is just a sense of familiarity as it’s been running for years and it’s old reliable almost.

She lives,she breathes..this...is the 425,showing us what she was meant to do and letting us peek into what made Steam the ruler of the Railroads!
425 I feel is an engine that captivates anyone. It’s loud and exciting for the railfans, and it’s such a classy paint scheme for the public to see and become interested in it.

Just joking,we can only dream to have her running again.
What matters is that we should be thankful with what Steam Engines are running for now.Each one is beautiful in it's own way,and the same goes for the 425.
@@uniontrains.8631 you’re right on, but if you want to hear a loud engine… Reading 2102 is the one you want to see. I don’t think anything will ever top how loud it is. Unreal.
@@MPT_Productions Oh yes,i can believe that.They sure stepped it up when they were making her pull 50 then 100 unloaded cars during the tests without diesel assistance to prepare her for pulling the passenger cars.
It was a magnificient sight,it was the very embodiment of what she was designed to do.(Even without being loaded,it gives you an image of how things were back then)

0:35 2:28 what 6 chime was that? It sounds like Great Smoky Mountain railroad 1702's old Illinois Central 6 chime from the 1990s
It is a Southern Pacific 6 Chime.
Question, ive been trying to find 425's schedule on the website. Can you please tell me what tab her excursions are in?
As of right now, the next time 425 runs will be November 5 and 6 which can be found under the fall foliage excursions section. It’s possible it may run in the gorge at some point and/or the Schuylkill Haven Borough Days, but nothing more is announced at this time.
