    Need to use a center so you get assists when your d-men score on offensive zone draws.

      as a new hockey fan who got instantly addicted i can certainly say he’s the greatest player in team sports ever. 8 mvps in a row is ridiculous

      1669 points in 696 games with the Oilers. That's how. 2.397 points per game! 1,188 in 791 games or 1.501 points per game, post-Oilers, is still pretty stupid good. But, the deal he and Pocklington made with the league to stay in Edmonton on his "personal service contract" with Pocklington ("personal service contracts" were a WHA construct, they have never existed in the NHL) and avoid going to the Colorado Rockies in the 1979 draft is how he did it. Colorado had Lanny MacDonald, who was pissed off about being in Colorado (he was traded there by Harold Ballard's Leafs for not much of anything, to punish Leafs captain Darryl Sittler who was in Ballard's doghouse). You put Gretzky on a 3-year entry level contract in Colorado instead of Edmonton, Oh, and with Pocklington being broke and all, Gretzky never sees time on the Oilers later either after hitting RFA status. He's still damn good, he's Gretzky, but I promise you he's not touching 200 points in Colorado (165-170 seems reasonable, he's still Wayne Gretzky! but he had 4 200+ point seasons in Edmonton, you bring those down to 160-175, that's a lot of points gone right there.)
      At one point in the video "Stick On The Ice" mentions his franchise player needing to be over 140 points every year, after he had a 95 point season because "Stick On The Ice" left him off some powerplay and penalty kill lines, which killed his ice time. Gretzky had 2,857 regular season NHL points. if you average 140 points a year (or 1.707 per game) you'd have to do that consecutively for 1,675 straight games to hit 2,858 points, that's 20.4 82-game seasons without missing any games, scoring 1.707 points per game. 1 95 point season destroys that chance, Gretzky had 137 points in his NHL rookie year. Essentially by being allowed to keep Gretzky on the "personal service contract" Peter Pocklington and the Oilers helped Gretzky avoid the 1979 NHL Draft, eliminated his "growing pains" by letting him be what should have been a #1 draft pick, but staying on a team that wasn't close to the worst in the league. In today's league, most if not all #1 picks have to spend a couple of seasons on teams that are awful before they get out of their rookie deals and can look for RFA deals with teams that don't suck (there can be exceptions if teams get lucky and get multiple high picks in a row, i.e. Pittsburgh getting Malkin at #2 in 2004, then having their tank jobs work out and Getting Crosby at #1 in 2005, and Staal in 2006 after staying at #2.... the other example being the Oilers winning the #1 pick in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2015, by either moving up or not moving down is insane, the odds of that are astronomical), but even back in the 1980's when teams could tank for a guaranteed #1 pick (i.e. Pittsburgh getting Mario Lemieux #1 in 1984, was 100% planned) it usually took teams a few years to actually rebuild a team after that because good established players were generally not part of "tank jobs" even in the old NHL. Lemieux had 100 points in his rookie year, but that's a far cry from 137.

    I think you need high franchise because that's what Gretzky was. Which is not really possible through a draft. Well, it is but not likely. But you did a good job staying within reality as much as you could. Didn't give him 50 minutes per night.

    28:45 if a elite/franchise player is asking for a ridiculous amount in the summer, just wait until free agency the next summer and sign them as an RFA, their asking price always goes down (unless they have a crazy year or if you’re already in the late 2030s lol)

    I think you needed Riley to play every line minutes. 1st line 2nd line 3rd line and 4th line minutes would probably do it. He needs to average 160+ points a season. I remember someone did it with mcdavid and he got him on every line to do so.

    • @EvanKiernanMusic
      @EvanKiernanMusic 3 місяці тому

      Power forwards score more points than playmakers, not only goals. having good playmaking linemates allows the offense to mainly go to one player. if the linemates sucked the production of the player attempting to break the points record would be less

    • @wond3rlove
      @wond3rlove 3 місяці тому

      @@EvanKiernanMusic yeah but one player can’t score every single goal on a line, if he a sniper and a playmaker on his line he could be scoring goals and getting a bunch of assists too. With him finding only passing teammates, it’s just a recreation of his 100 goal video
