Nantes supporter here. It was heartbreaking to wake up and hear that Emiliano disappeared overnight. The following weeks were horrible, checking the news constantly hoping he was found safe, but with every minute that hope vanished a bit more. I can't even begin to imagine how hard it was for his family and those close to him. That man was universally loved here, and we still chant for him to this day. As we say in France : the best ones are always the first to go. We'll always miss you Emi.
This is such a lovely comment, Im not a Nantes or Cardiff fan, Im a Southampton fan but I remember at the time how much I was doing the same thing, it was big in the news here and I was hoping he'd be found alive. Must have been so heatbreaking to all of his family and his supporters. But the fact you still chant his name is beautiful, and I respect that so much.
really feel for the nantes and cardiff fans tbh. it’s not their fault the clubs were so weird about the finances after, i imagine it must’ve made it so much worse. both clubs should’ve split the fee 50/50 and contributed a large amount to his funeral to make it a special occasion. as much as i liked nantes (mostly cos they had big moussa sissoko) and cardiff i pray on their downfalls now due to their embarrassing owners
The Emiliano Sala chant sung by Cardiff fans after his death is genuinely one of the most beautiful and pure chants I’ve ever heard in football and I feel bad that they never got to see Sala play in a Cardiff shirt. It’s a real shame that the only thing that makes the Cardiff owner sad in this case is the fact that he lost some money, not the fact that a human being died tragically.
As a pilot/qualified accident investigator and massive football fan I was absolutely dumbfounded by this incident. To put it into context, pilots doing training (in the US at least where I did my training), are more qualified than Mr. Ibbotson was in just their 2nd year of university. It's completely insane that this was allowed to happen. Emiliano didn't deserve this whatsoever and Mr. Ibbotson's incompetence as a pilot was the final nail in the coffin. Disgusting.
As ever, you can have all the rules you like but if there is no enforcement to make sure that people actually follow those rules then you are basically operating on the honour system. While it has no direct bearing on this case, the ridiculous decision of the previous UK government to withdraw from EASA (the EU’s Aviation Safety Agency) as a result of Brexit (several non-EU states are members, like Norway and Switzerland, so no need to withdraw) has meant that the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority has seen a huge increase in its administrative burden without a corresponding increase in its budget. Enforcement is unlikely to have improved as a result. I’m certainly not aware of any systematic clampdown in the UK on the appalling practices that contributed so much to this avoidable tragedy.
@GorgeDawes You raise a valid point. Withdrawal from EASA was completely unnecessary and overcomplicated many things especially licensing and conversion requirements. An example is that I was looking out of curiosity at the new requirements to convert TCCA to CAA and it's nowhere near as straightforward as to EASA. Silly.
@KiffJRockka there's always one of you that can't accept that some of us actually did something with our lives, perhaps because you didn't. With that said, I'd be happy to share pilot specific knowledge with you about why this crash was completely avoidable, what made the weather conditions as dangerous as they were for Mr. Ibbotson specifically and how a £2 carbon monoxide detector could have played a role in saving both of these people's lives - but, I almost guarantee your response will likely be a sad attempt to troll more. If you actually want to learn more about this crash as well as LaMia 2933 which decimated the Chapecoense team though, do let me know.
Incompetence from the Cardiff owner and management. It sounds like the owner Vincent Tan got taken for a ride by his lawyers. They effectively killed the goodwill any casual fan might have for Cardiff. Now many of just hope they go down.
The poor, poor lad. This is a terrible way to start any weekend, but thanks for highlighting this. Let's try to keep Sala's memory alive for as long as possible. And rest in peace to the pilot. Just tragic and awful, the lot of it.
As a Cardiff fan I often get defensive feelings about this whenever it's brought up. There's a lot of guilty parties in all of this (some more than others) and I feel we get a lot more abusive than we deserve. However, the way our board and owner went about this initially was disgusting and it just adds another reason to a very long list of reasons why most Cardiff fans want our ownership out. They should have just paid as agreed and then gone through courts with the insurance company.
I feel sorry for Cardiff fans. Although I remember well when it happened, I couldn't say which percentage of the blame to put to each party, but Cardiff's board decision to sue for the fee so soon and to use all means possible was a bit sickening. I'm not a Nantes fan either, but I really wonder how it's possible that clubs have to use such amateurish pilots and planes. Yeah when you sign a player you want him to play ASAP, but Nantes and Cardiff are both connected to Paris and London, come on... Cardiff supporters have been great though, much love to my celtic friends
I think most people bringing it up don't blame the Cardiff fans, they know that the FANS of the club were as respectful as was possible, but unfortunately insults, songs and chants aimed at the higher-ups kinda fall on the ears of the fans whenever they're raised because they come up at matches all the time. A lot of us following a lot of different clubs have to wrestle with the contradictory aims of following our club and accepting some of the poor moral standards in the office, it's just not always been dragged out as publicly or as transparently in poor taste as the Cardiff-Nantes transfer saga.
Argentinean here, I still remember all the news coverage when the disappearance happened. For a couple of weeks it was all that the news channels would talk about. I think that for a little while there the negligence in all of what happened lead players from here to be more skeptical about European clubs and leagues, but that's obviously since faded away. For me and many others, I believe, it became yet another reason to be deadly terrified about helicopters and small planes. I don't fear going on a proper airplane, but I couldn't be bribed to ever board a small passenger flying vehicle.
Understandable. From what I know, the vast majority of airplane crashes involve private, small aircrafts. Commercial flights are, in turn, safer than cars.
This whole drama is disgusting. Cardiff should have paid, and Nantes should have given the transfer fee to Emi's family. I wonder what Emi would have thought of this whole saga...
He'd have known his and many others who play football's dreams = £€$ for rich guys in suits If the players don't matter, how can we as fans delude ourselves into ever thinking we matter? Not in football at this level anyway.
Speaking as a lifelong Cardiff fan, I can assure you all that us fans are appalled by the clubs behaviour throughout all of this. Absolutely shameful. RIP Emiliano 💙.
Crazy to think I’d pretty much forgotten about this I remember even here in Australia where football is lucky to get a couple of minutes of coverage on the news this was a pretty big story
An extremely well-handled and well-judged video, though not easy to watch. Thank you. This is probably the case that has made me truly lose my love of football - a scummy, scuzzy, crooked and thoroughly disrespectful saga that exposes the worst elements of modern football. And that's without you even mentioning the hideous individuals who chose to photograph his lifeless and torn body in the morgue. Sala deserved better and football deserves better. Much love to Emiliano's family and friends x
Barely saw Sala play so not like I was an enormous fan, but his death to this day bothers me hugely. Young guy, prime of his life and climbing the ladder. Deserved so much better.
Remember it like it was last week. I was a Bluebird, but the 'grief' felt forced on for "show". Moreover, I Just knew that when the grief time was over, the uglyness would turn its nasty head. Never, ever have we witnessed how a human life is messured in pure, economic value . I get why Cardiff did what they did, but thats no excuse whatsoever. The 'artificial greaf' with all the banners always left a bad taste in my mouth, and the aftermath lacked any respect for Sala and his mourning family
it was deeply cynical, yes. At the very least, if they'd just sue them once and get over with it when they lost would still be disgraceful, but understandable. But the desperation that they keep showing, and even more the absolutely ridiculous case that it culminated in today, is just a very bad joke. Like, seriously? They must know Nantes aren't guilty in any way. If they thought about it, they'd also know they won't win this. But it just feels like the ownership is fixated on getting back money they were "robbed" of or something. Which, as you point out, is just treating a human life as a commodity. Disgusting.
Great tribute video to Emiliano, Alfie. Not taking anything away from the excellent work here, see it more as 'also' rather than 'instead of', there is a very good BBC podcast series about this tragedy on BBC Sounds.
Why in God's name couldn't Cardiff have provided a private jet? If you are buying a player you are hedging your chances of staying up on and spending a club record transfer fee then surely you would wrap the player up in cotton wool. A private jet from Nantes to Cardiff return booked a day in advance only costs around £11,000
It's common knowledge that Cardiff City offered Sala a commercial flight from Paris to Cardiff Which Sala declined on the basis that his agent would arrange a private flight which ultimately ended killing him
The heartbreaking thing is it was easily preventable the way both clubs acted afterwards was absolutely disgusting though he was a human his life mattered R.I.P emiliano ❤
If the stall horn is going off while taxiing then it's definitely malfunctioning and that's appropriate to turn it off, though you definitely wouldn't fly with it still pulled.
I'm surprised there aren't more conspiracy or investigative videos on this story, there's just so many suspect elements, the unqualified pilot flying the plane and not getting the body is just so scary
Nantes should have just requested half the transfer fee i.e. both clubs share the financial loss, then they could have setup a fund for Salas family together. Instead we get endless legal battles with both clubs trying to absolve themselves of any responsibility. I know Cardiff have come off a lot worse, but both clubs have disgraced themselves in my opinion.
Cardiffs behaviour in the days , weeks and months after Emilianos death made them one of the most despised clubs in the football league and rightly so ( their fans not included )
No... the owners behaviour!!! I didn't see the groundsman involved in this, the fans, supporters clubs, the physios, players, the HR department, the outreach team, the Cardiff city foundation staff etc... Do not tar a club with 100 years of heritage with the current Ahile owners actions!!! You wouldnt accuse Chelsea football club of helping invade Ukraine!
@@kyrkosekaterinaris1328the only time I’ve seen this are when certain Cardiff fans have defended the club’s actions regarding lying about Sala not being their player because they didn’t want to pay for him
The relationship of agents with managers and players as you said towards the end is also troubling and in some cases with higher management of a club. Agents are representing both managers and players and maybe that is why they are becoming more like coaches and maybe not having the influence that they used to have in player sales and purchases.
Thought I’d comment as a life long Cardiff fan and say that pretty much all of us fans were disgusted with how the owners of our club handled the situation, personally I felt both clubs could of handled it a lot better especially Cardiff, to these owners the money means nothing but to his family and friends he meant everything, he’s still a Cardiff legend even if he never got to play a game 💙 R.I.P Emiliano gone but never forgotten
The one beautiful thing to come out of the tragedy is he'll always be remembered as a club icon, and not someone who maybe languished for a terrible premier league side
Im a huge cardiff city fan and went to every home gane this season. The year was just awful and so emotionally charged. The loss of sala and the following days were so sad and, the the actions of the ownership solidified the fans hate of vincent tan. People forget this year we also played Leicester the first game after the death of their owners at the stadium. Such a sad year for football
What about David Henderson's business insurance policy? Surely he's the most culpable from a civil law perspective given that his negligence landed him a criminal conviction for the tragic loss of a £20m footballer's life? I'm a hobbyist when it comes to [Tort] law and not an expert, particularly not in Swiss civil law in the slightest... But it seems to me that the proximity of Cardiff to McKay as the person who hired Henderson to transport their player should at least facilitate McKay and Cardiff being owed money from Henderson and his insurers- as his negligence in providing a unlicensed and unqualified pilot when the agreement was that he himself was meant to pilot the flight lead to the loss. If there's no evidence that McKay, Cardiff or Nantes consented to the change of pilot or use of a knackered old banger plane (which was the cause of poor Sala's egregious manslaughter and the ensuing losses on Cardiff of a financial asset) then the liability for those financial losses rests overwhelmingly with Henderson's insurers and the man himself. I also absolutely agree with Alfie's point that the transfer fee is a separate legal matter and that he was Cardiff's player before that flight service commenced. Ergo Cardiff have always owed Nantes the transfer fee in full...This was a fantastic piece of balanced journalism about such a sad loss of a poor young man; so thank you for handling the subject matter with respect and sensitivity!
Apart from the emotional heartbreak, I just find it truly baffling how a club was willing to spend £15 million on a player but not a few extra thousand to make sure he got to them safely
What Cardiff and Nantes should have done is agree for the first instalment to be paid and no more, out of respect for the death. Legal win, PR win, but much more importantly for them, the best possible outcome they could have got beyond morally questionable things. For us moral fans, it would represent a sporting gesture that goes far above football. But who’s up for acting mature?
When people try to defend professional football as not just a business, this story and the disgraceful way both clubs have behaved comes to mind. R.I.P Emiliano Sala
My thoughts are entirely with the one - and only - innocent party in this tragic tale, Mr Emiliano Sala, and his family and friends, and all those who admired and loved him.
The involvement of Willie McKay has not had nearly enough coverage. Warnock also needs a hell of a questioning about all of this, wherever Warnock goes, McKay follows. But no one ever wants to question Warnock for being such a reprehensible prick because most top flight fans particularly just see him as the funny TV man
Do you know Alfie I’ve always wondered what are the most successful positions that the most successful managers played when they were players I’m led to believe strikers make the best managers but I could be wrong
I want to tell you but the Anwar Ali saga in India is the most entertaining yet in Indian history yet. I know that you have come a long way where you made history videos with football on the side but still
all of this is so insane as someone from north america because all the sports teams here are extremely scrupulously in how transportation for athletes/teams are conducted. Infact air canada has a divison called air canada jetz that is exclusively for chartering sports teams, bands etc. and if not all at least 90% of nfl teams own and operates a private jet precisely for travelling new signings, players they have traded etc themselves including the jaguars who are owned by the same person that owns fullham who probably also utilize the same aircraft for signings and the like. These planes are often in unveiling videos themselves. I do agree that considering these real life players as assets is somewhat inhumane but even if the teams consider players this way why would you not be 1000% sure the person you spent 15 million pounds on is safe 24/7. It is insane they didnt demand him to be on a commercial flight that has the oversight of a regulatory body like easa. I feel bad for the fans but the people who own cardiff deserve to be in the 9th tier of english football.
Without doubt, the most shoddy transfer saga ever in football. Absolutely shocking. No matter what status your club is, you never cut corners. RIP Emiliano Sala.
Some say that Ibbertson was not even in the plane on the return journey, and that he was last seen mugging old ladies in Nantes town centre. I don`t believe this to be true.
If Sala could see how this played out he'd have found out that his and many others who play football's dreams = £€$ for rich guys in suits If the players don't matter, how can we as fans delude ourselves into ever thinking we matter? Certainly not in football at this level anyway.
As a Swansea fan (albeit an American one so there’s a degree of plasticity there) hearing about Swans fans taunting Cardiff fans with really vile Sala-related chants at their derby and printing fake boarding passes for Emiliano on “Swansea City Airlines flight D3AD” or something like that really made my support for them wane. Football fan culture can really bring out the worst in people jfc.
The whole thing was an ugly mess and I didn't realise how petty Cardiff had gotten. I get the reasons, they couldn't afford to just write off £15 million for a guy who hadn't even been able to play a game for them even when they were in the Premiership, doubly so as a Championship club. At some point though the pissing contest has to stop. Sorry for the Cardiff fans who are taking crap for it though.
It's a disgrace to be bickering over money when two men lost their lives in an accident however Cardiff is a corporation which provides many other people a job and purpose and would benefit to stay in business.
I believe that in French law anyone acting on behalf of a business is seen as the business doing those actions so, essentially in law , Nantes arranged the flight and knew that the pilot wasn't qualified to fly. It is also a criminal offence in France for a club to hire someone banned from being an agent.
Can we get a video on the increase in English players playing abroad? I know English players playing outside England is nothing new, but in recent years there has been an increase in English players in other top European leagues.
A lot of guilty parties in this situation, but I always felt that Cardiff were far scummier in pressuring Nantes to pay more even after Sala's death. Scummy bastards.
This might seem a strange aside, but this is basically why private, flying cars (as you see in Sci fi like the Jetsons or Futurama) will probably never be a thing. If your car breaks down, you stop at the side of the road. If your plane breaks down, that it almost certainly a fatal accident. There's a reason we wait so long at airports, to make sure the planes are safe. This was such an avoidable tragedy.

Surely the flight operator should be sued for criminal negligence by Cardiff City not Nantes.
Hey Alfie will the people at HITC ever put your videos into streaming services as a podcast? RIP Emiliano
I still remember seeing Nantes coach Halilhodzic crying
We know all about the McKay's here at Leeds, so many dodgy dealings went on when he was involved!
I went to the Bournemouth home match after Sala's death, and the outpour of emotion was so overwhelming I was almost openly crying sat in my seat
This might be my favourite HITC video and it's about a player I have never heard of.
This is your best video of all time. May Sala continue to Rest In Peace ❤
This is absolutely heartbreaking man RIP
Cardiffs behaviour in the days , weeks and months after Emilianos death made them one of the most despised clubs in the football league and rightly so ( their fans not included )
No... the owners behaviour!!!
I didn't see the groundsman involved in this, the fans, supporters clubs, the physios, players, the HR department, the outreach team, the Cardiff city foundation staff etc...
Do not tar a club with 100 years of heritage with the current Ahile owners actions!!!
You wouldnt accuse Chelsea football club of helping invade Ukraine!
@@leeofdoom4452 I did state the fans weren't to blame but cardiffs actions were some of the scummiest I've ever seen and I'll stand by that
@@GregorTriggs no, Cardiff did nothing but show respect. The scummy owner was disgraceful, and large parts of the club advised him not to do it
Yes but many of the comments are against the fans too, like they are to blame for still loving their team and not turning their back to them.
@@kyrkosekaterinaris1328the only time I’ve seen this are when certain Cardiff fans have defended the club’s actions regarding lying about Sala not being their player because they didn’t want to pay for him
watched the whole video, amazing vid and insight
Brilliant video mate
Sol Bamba was in that team aswell RIP Bamba and Sala
Brilliant video
Cardiff's management under Tan needs its own video. So many baffling decisions, the bluebird being replaced by a dragon was just the start.
Didn’t know this was still going on and how bad Cardiff dealt with the situation. Disgusting behaviour from Cardiff.
Great video, very sad for sure and as you said totally avoidable....RIP SALA
The (BBC I think) podcast Transfer that covers this is fantastic btw
Apart from the emotional heartbreak, I just find it truly baffling how a club was willing to spend £15 million on a player but not a few extra thousand to make sure he got to them safely
It wasn't the club's fault. It was the Agent and Pilot's fault.
They wanted him on a proper flight, it was on Nantes side that the dodgy flight was booked
But who’s up for acting mature?
got 4 ads from airlines interrupt this video, algorithm has no taste
When people try to defend professional football as not just a business, this story and the disgraceful way both clubs have behaved comes to mind. R.I.P Emiliano Sala
My thoughts are entirely with the one - and only - innocent party in this tragic tale, Mr Emiliano Sala, and his family and friends, and all those who admired and loved him.
The involvement of Willie McKay has not had nearly enough coverage. Warnock also needs a hell of a questioning about all of this, wherever Warnock goes, McKay follows. But no one ever wants to question Warnock for being such a reprehensible prick because most top flight fans particularly just see him as the funny TV man
My thoughts exactly
It's a shocker that nantes didn't face punishment for the negligence on their part
If Sala could see how this played out he'd have found out that his and many others who play football's dreams = £€$ for rich guys in suits
If the players don't matter, how can we as fans delude ourselves into ever thinking we matter? Certainly not in football at this level anyway.
3:53 he didnt use the watmore pic. Respect
Football is a beautiful game run by horrible and corrupt people. 😔
I only had to read the title to know instantly what this was about. Heartbreaking man
Neither Cardiff nor Nantes are wealthy. FIFA should have paid Nantes the transfer fee to avoid the legal wrangling.
Fifa is an exceedingly wealthy dictatorship. Why would they ever extend a helping hand in such a way? That’s not what rich ppl do
I agree that this is a great idea, I just know that fifa would never consider it
When bro leaves this channel, am going to whoever he's going with him. 🎉❤
I believe that in French law anyone acting on behalf of a business is seen as the business doing those actions so, essentially in law , Nantes arranged the flight and knew that the pilot wasn't qualified to fly.
It is also a criminal offence in France for a club to hire someone banned from being an agent.
One of the most tragic stories in football. So many things done wrong.
A FINE COVERAGE OF SALA’S TRAGIC DEATH 😢😢
Next they are going to sue his mother because she convinced him to go
Don't give them ideas
Can we get a video on the increase in English players playing abroad? I know English players playing outside England is nothing new, but in recent years there has been an increase in English players in other top European leagues.
Lawyers making an absolute fortune from Cardiff. Probably them that came up with the new plan.
this could've been so easily prevented too, rest in peace Sala❤
A lot of guilty parties in this situation, but I always felt that Cardiff were far scummier in pressuring Nantes to pay more even after Sala's death. Scummy bastards.
This might seem a strange aside, but this is basically why private, flying cars (as you see in Sci fi like the Jetsons or Futurama) will probably never be a thing.
If your car breaks down, you stop at the side of the road. If your plane breaks down, that it almost certainly a fatal accident. There's a reason we wait so long at airports, to make sure the planes are safe. This was such an avoidable tragedy.
