I sit down with Alicia Silverstone, an actress best known for her iconic role in the hit film Clueless. She’s also a New York Times best selling author, health advocate, co-creator of MyKind Organic Supplements, and host of The Real Heal Podcast. Alicia is a dedicated mother who has boldly and unapologetically shared her passions for natural living and natural parenting since the time she’s been in the spotlight - even if it was met with ridicule or laughter.
As a long time vegan, she published two incredible books that were some of the first vegan books of their kind: The Kind diet and The Kind Mama.
In this episode we cover:
- Alicia’s vegan story
- What it was like being vegan in Hollywood before it was cool
- Different kinds of activism and what the world needs more of
- Her tips for raising healthy kids
- How she responds to push back against her “alternative” parenting styles
- What respectful parenting looks like for her family
- The relationship between her and her son Bear
- Staying true to yourself and your beliefs
- Having confidence in not caring what people think about you
- Her podcast and what she’s excited about now
- Co-sleeping, elimination communication, raising her son Bear vegan, and more

This world desperately needs more people like Ellen and Alicia. Thank you for all you do.
The kind diet was the first book I had when I went vegan, 13 years ago!! It was my bible!
I still pull it out, every now and then, and even have certain recipes memorized.💜
I especially love the peach crumble, rustic pasta and date, apple cinnamon oatmeal!
I can’t wait to check out the podcast!
Thank you both, for your honesty, hard work and dedication. I feel so inspired.💕
I loved this interview so much!!! Alicia is the reason I became a vegan 12 years ago. I was at a bookstore just looking for some books on cleaner, healthier eating I bought her book "The Kind Diet". I read the whole book in one sitting and decided to go vegan overnight and I have never looked back! One of the best decisions I have ever made!
She was the reason myself, my mum & sister went vegan 12 years ago also, we watched an interview she did on Oprah & the rest is history 💚
It’s nice to see a mother care so much for their child. ❤️
Agreed! I wish everyone would be more kind and loving towards their children.
I absolutely love how Alicia describes the health effects that happened to her as a result of her going vegan…. Health effects that she didn’t expect but happily welcomed! Everything that she described… her skin, hair, nails etc happened to me too. Now people get angry with me when I tell the reason how my hair is so thick and long. Lol. Thank you Ellen!!!
@@carolyn2197 stop drinking that haterade. Your insecurities are showing.
Dear Ellen, I’m an Italian psychologist and loving mama of two amazing boys, I deeply believe in conscious, positive parenting and, as always (I’m a long time subscriber on your channel too) I’ve loved this podcast, finding it truly inspiring and full of joy. I hope I’ll be able to express myself at my best (as English is not my first language) but there’s only one thing Alicia said that I think could be triggering for someone.. “Never” (as “always”) it’s a dangerous word, and we should be all really aware using it… I’m sure Alicia has a natural kind attitude and probably she truly never raises her voice or loose patience, but the reality for the majority of parents it’s really different. We all experienced tiredness, irritability, even anger, and there are times when we “messed up” with our kids as you fairly said about yourself during the podcast. Anger is an human feeling, and we should model how to managed it, not hiding it, otherwise kids would learn to hide it too, or, even worst, they may learn that have negative feelings it’s wrong and not normal. I just want to say that maybe positive parents are kind and patient most of the times, but no one should be blamed himself if it’s not perfect all the time. The important thing during hard times it’s to control our reaction, breathe, step back and, eventually, apologize to our kids.
I hope I didn’t sound critical, it wasn’t my intention at all (I adore both you and Alicia) but as professional I’m aware that social media can fix unrealistic standard and sometimes make feel people inadequate. I just want to say to all the amazing parents out there that are reading that I’m sure they’re doing their best, even if they make mistakes ♥️Thank you so much for your work, your content it’s always inspiring and profound. Kisses from Italy 🇮🇹
Omg THIS!!! Thank you for this! Honestly this podcast made me feel like a terrible parent when deep down I know I'm not. I'm a homeschooling parent of 4 under 5, and I most certainly don't feed my kids these perfect foods ALL the time, I try my best to, but it just isn't practical. And what kind of perfect angel parent never has to discipline their kids??? Or never feels overwhelmed and yells at them??? I know she said she makes some mistakes at times and gave examples...those examples are not real life. I'm sorry. I love Ellen, but is this for real? Lol. I would also be interested in knowing her day-to-day living situation, how much she works, how much help she gets from friends and family, do you have a spouse, does your spouse work outside the home, do you have a personal chef, housecleaner, nanny? All these things contribute to a person's parenting styles, as well as their patience level. I really try to live by a lot of what they mentioned in this podcast, but honestly it sounded like a whole lot of perfection happening over here. Not real life. That's my two cents anyways.
And I would like to add the financial aspect to eating so clean. It's EXPENSIVE! Organic, clean food is EXPENSIVE! Most people can only afford so much. I buy mostly organic when I can, otherwise we buy what works for our budget.
@@cassandramarie8046 starting a family garden to supplement groceries is a great idea. And you can say it's organic for sure.
@@jenevivelancia3012 I agree! And we have! Unfortunately nothing that could supplement what we eat as a family of 6. We have a very tiny space for a garden. Maybe one day we'll have some land! 🤗
@@cassandramarie8046 oh my goodness 6? I can understand that being difficult. Just the fact that you consciously try to feed them organic is more than 90% of moms. I think the world needs a grocery store chain that's just local produce. Like a co-op or a farm store but in chain store style.
I would love for Alicia to make a kind kid and teen book. Diving more into her parenting style and her and Bears favourite recipes
YES!!!

There are already books like this
Love Alicia! I met her at a Kind Lifers meet up back in 2014 and she was so lovely, down to earth and kind!
two of my favorites!!! i legit used to watch clueless like to fall asleep at night in school because it was my favorite movie.
i can definitely align with her mentioning a heart softening after going vegan
I love Alicia! Thank you for sharing this amazing interview Ellen, we need more people who believe in the importance of healthy habits.
Wonderful talk! I have to say though growing up in the 60s when McDonald’s came around and all of the processed foods there was talk about it being unhealthy and most of us really did know it was bad. I think what happened is when more women were entering the workplace all of a sudden that information became less apparent. You two are wonderful parents. Keep it up
Bold and unapologetic ✊🏽 yessss keep 🙌this🙌going 🙌, love you two!!!!
I would love for Alicia to speak on the My Kind products in regards to the brand they are under being bought out by Nestle. Are they still as wholesome as when she created them? Is she still involved in the sources of ingredients?
I didn’t know they were owned by nestle damn…I would love to hear her talk about it
Oh wow Nestlé.... Thats terrible right of the back
OMG! I thought about you and Alicia having a podcast conversation since the youtube video where you and your family visited her and her son! You are both so inspiring!
Alicia Silverstone is so interesting. I really enjoyed this interview. She seems very down to earth.
I also did ec with both of my kids and I recommend in 100%!!! My son was ~6 months when he stopped pooping in his diaper. Peeing was different but it was so nice to not have to deal with poopy diapers.
Imagine your an 11 year old boy and your mother goes on a national forum and tells the world about your potty training, that you still sleep with her, and she prechewed your food.
I hope you wouldn’t do that to your kids…
It’s Clueless.
@@Pavia1525 haha why all the hate? See you hating on a bunch of comments...
@@Pavia1525 you’re so cringe
I am a listener who was not on board as Alicia said.. I've always been told that Alicia is "so weird" and doing things "wrong" and I went into this video with those perceptions, but I must say, I'm on board after this video and I actually want to do better after this video. Nothing about what I heard was "weird" or "wrong", it all came from a place of love and it all resonated with me.
I love Alicia. She will always be the 'IT' girl. Using her platform for greater good. She deserves so much more as do you Ellen🥰.
LOVE cosleeping...the kids will know when it's the time to leave. I was the same with my kids!
Love you two together! Alicia you have been such an inspiration to me as a vegan and a mother. I am the only vegan in my family. We recently lost our home and was living out of our car until family took us in until we could get back on our feet. Being on the road was hard I missed my home cooked vegan meals and taking care of my body but I didn’t worry about it I did what I had to do to take care of my children and still managed to stay plant based even if it was Taco Bell 🤣… We also had to give up our dogs for adoption because no one would foster them while being homeless but they went to a beautiful family. Being a kind mama is something I strive for everyday. You have been my motivation to stay vegan and stay kind not only for my children but for myself. My children aren’t vegan but I am never going to give up trying but they do love your kids multivitamin gummies. Thank you for all that you do! I love you!
I wish I was friends with you two. I feel we are totally aligned with our values and your honest conversation is so important and inspiring! Ellen your podcasts really help me on my health journey, thank you so much for keeping me motivated
Ahhh! Have been waiting for this one since I heard you announce all the new guests on one of your recent videos! Loving the podcast SO much!!

I love all these talks on raising vegan kids. You guys are so relatable and honest. Thank you so much for these conversations ❤️
If we didn't already know this about Alicia, you can tell she's been vegan a long time bc there's something about most long time vegans who get it when it comes to talking about or not talking about veganism.
Loved this Ellen it felt more like listenig to two girlfriends having a catchup and talking about life then an interview it made me smile! Alicia is such a sweet person love her approach with life. I don't have any children of my own but if I ever get the chance to this sounds like an amazing way to raising children. Thanks for the insight💛

Thank you ladies for setting good examples for women everywhere.

Thats a good parenting tip.

She’s awesome. Very well spoken and down to earth 🌍
Loved this episode!! So good :) Did anyone here read Alicia’s book The Kind Mama, and is it still relevant today?
It's as relevant now as ever. Some of the things she talks about are more widely-known now, but definitely worth a read.
I was a vegan, but it didn’t work for my body. When I started eating more meat, my body started responding in positive ways. BUT, I truly believe that we all have different genetic makeup, and what works for one person, may not be the best for others.
How long? The body goes through a massive detox when vegan that for some could take a few years. If not that it could of been the lectins. Research Dr. Gundry's diet.
Same I got so weak
I feel like it honesty depends on what “vegan foods you are eating”. Vegan processed foods are terrible. If you can’t stomach killing an animal with your bare hands skin it, cut it, clean it, & remove its organs/fur/bones you should not be eating meat. If you depending on a 3rd party supplier to meat you contributing to the problem.
@@aquariusmoon3333 Agreed, however , does anyone know what Ellen thinks of protein ? I just bought her e book package (3) and they’re great except idk about the protein ? I felt horrible after becoming vegetarian because I didn’t eat a lot of protein so I do now. Idk just curious
Dude we are all the same species with the same nutrient requirements. We have different levels needed and different calories needed but we all need the same stuff. You were probably not eating enough calories or not eating enough variety. This really isn't difficult. If you really care about animals you will take the time to find a doctor who supports your choices and will help you. You will also be sure to look up chronometer and different whole food vegan recipes.
I say all this as one of those people who failed at being vegan, "it made me weak", so I quit. I was so disgusted by these industries, and I started eating "local" and still, I hated it. So I took the time to get educated. And now I'm doing it and no problems. I'm healthier than I ever was.
My problem was not eating enough calories and not eating enough variety.
I love both of you! This was my favorite episode so far!
Amazing compassionate women. Thank you for this talk 💗
Two of my favourite people together ❤️❤️❤️
I'd like to see you interview Nina and Randa on here.
Love Alicia and love her pink shirt!!!
We need every type of animal rights activist. Aggressive and kind. What we NEVER need is an apologist (Alicia doesn't seem like she is👏). You can be kind and not be an apologist. Earthing Ed does it best.
Edited as sadly Alicia is definitely an apologist and was sad to see her not take a harder stance on animals. Telling the world they don’t have to be vegan…come on.
Hate to say it, but I would lean toward her being plant based and not fully vegan. She seems to be plant based for her health and not vegan for the animals.
if you really care about your health, the if you need to eat meat, you raise it yourself and you kill it yourself, then you know where your food comes from, and you know that to never take the animals for granted, and to always raise your animals the way you would want to be treated if you were an animal , have empathy for them
Fantastic as usual. Thank you Ellen. 😉👍
I wish that Alicia could write a book about Peri menopause/menopause too. She's probably not there yet though. Im sure that she will at some point though. xx
Loved this! Thank you very much!
I adore Alicia Silverstone ... her book is not just for Vegans its for everyone that likes to try new things ❤
Great Podcast! Thank you
I have a similar story, I´ve been a vegetarian from an early age, like her. BUT after 23 years I had to changed my diet out of many health issues. >>> Migranes, Headaches, Depression, brittle naills, hair loss, enlarged veines - I got surgery on both legs at the age of 35 !!! All the symtomes are gone since I´ve changed my diet to KETO ! Heathy fats and proteins are needed to have a healtyh body + mind !!! Being vegan is eating mostly fibre + sugar ( carbs are processed as sugar too ) And sugar is toxic to the body, ... you guys.
Great podcast Ellen. You and Alicia are such beautiful humans xx
On the point about the “extreme activism” like people dumping red paint on others etc: it’s not my place to tell someone else how to do their activism, and we all have a journey with how we do activism, and our activism styles & tactics can change and mature in different ways through our activism-life cycle. And people receive all those messages from activists in different ways as well. For some people, the dumping of red paint WORKS for them and the message is strong and shifts a change in thinking. For a lot of other people (it seems), it may turn them off and therefore ridicule vegans and veganism without ever truly understanding the issue. And that’s unfortunate because people shouldn’t shut down veganism based off one scenario / person that they happen to dislike.
Never the less, i welcome all forms of activism, and furthermore I encourage conversation and discourse and constructive criticism of activism, with the hope that people will continue to improve their activism in their own ways. And I can stand in solidarity with all activists (whether that’s feminists or animal-activists or environmental activists etc) without fully agreeing on their personal approach on how to do their own activism.
How many times can I say activist & activism in one sentence 😅🤪
Thank you both for this podcast and conversation! 💕
Are you insane or merely sarcastic?
@@Pavia1525 move along…. ✌🏼
Yep… you are insane. People who dump red paint on others deserve a beat down.
@@Pavia1525 I didn’t say I agree with that… but thanks for your opinion. You could post your opinion in the general comments area, as your comment doesn’t seem to be a direct reply to what I wrote. :) my post had a just a little* more depth to it than that… and you’ve not replied to any point that I’ve made
@@anniexo3179 you clearly condone violent acts in the name of “activism”, for example, while you wouldn’t partake in dumping paint on people in protest, you still support the people who choose to do this. Get it?
BTW… I’m a Second Amendment activist… does this mean you support my activism as well? Or is it just Leftist causes…
Quote: “I welcome all forms of activism” “I stand in solidarity with all activists”
Linda & Paul McCartney became vegans in England as well.
Loved this episode! Alicia seems like such a nice person.
I'm only a few minutes in. I am a flirting omnivore. I do notice, when I stop eating dairy, I'm so much happier. I think one of the reasons is because dairy hurts my stomach. The pain is so constant, that I don't realize it's w problem until I stop eating it, and I'm so much happier.
Amazing and beautiful soul….
I am not vegetarian but I try to have a few meat free days a week, but the comment about Lego land. I went to the US for 2 weeks and I was dying by the end of it. I don't know what shit is in the food over there but I was not OK for about 10 days after coming home to Ireland. I know a bunch of stuff that's used in the US is banned here, but I didn't think it would affect me like it did.
I loved her in Diary of a Wimpy Kid. She's about my age and I feel she was kind of picked on in the media. I remember her talking about chewing food and giving it to her babe. I've done the exact same thing- it only makes sense when you're a mother- but she got such negative press. I'd like to see her in more comedies- I think she's very funny.
LOVED this
Crazy how come people do not understand motherhood 🌹
Yes ! Yes and all the Yeses right now !
Uggghh, she’s such a BAD ASS! ❤️❤️
Alicia is literally the only celebrity I listen to LOL
omg i cant believe you got Alicia!!
Alicia Silverstone...the crush I will always have
Oh gosh I relate so much XD The vegan journey
Who’s going to tell her that temperament and sleep are more responsible for behavior than diet. Also what an insult to people with vegan kids with cancer and long COVID who have, indeed, needed to take medicine. It’s also possible it wasn’t the sugar…
Alicia!!!!! ❤❤❤
My boy (vegan all his 8 years) has had way less sick days than standardly fed kids.
Just. Wait.
Takis are awful! I taught for 24.5 years and my elementary students ate them as a daily fare.
2 Legends 💫💫
Continuum Concept is a great book!
Love this episode and love you both, but just one thing didn't sit right and I guess I took it a little personally. Alicia seemed to say that thanks to Bear's vegan diet and her gentle parenting Bear was very calm and didn't go through the terrible twos etc. My vegan daughter was born with a very strong will and is most certainly going through the terrible twos. I feel we have to be careful about generalising... I know I'm a great mum and have given 100% BFing until she turned two, co-sleeping, gentle parenting and she's still a little monster at the moment! ;-)
Once her kid is older and is online and is out in the world beyond his mother's grasp, I feel really bad that he has to see his mother's stories about feeding him regurgitated food from her mouth and bragging about sleeping in the same bed with him when he was 11. We were all mortified when our parents said intimate things in front of family or friends, but imagine the whole world knowing your private details. Even if you don't think this stuff is embarrassing because it's ~natural~ or whatever, your kid may very think differently, and you're taking away their right to privacy which you should be safe guarding as parent. Just SHUT UP. and wait until your kids are old enough to give consent to release the details - if they even want to.
He will always know that his mother loves him and took the best care of him possible. That's more than most boys his age can say.
I don't want to be a negative nancy or anything, but, don't animals eat other animals all the time?
I mean, what's the difference between a lion eating a zebra alive and a human killing a cow?
There's a lot of humans so a lot of cows have to die. Is it the aesthetic of all the cows dying in the same building?
Son will have major problems with romantic relationships in future. Overbearing and obsessed with her son. She takes out her loneliness on him. He is not her security blanket he is his own person. Worry for him. She needs codependency therapy.
She needs a CPS visit
I love Alicia but it does seem some of her baggage is being put on him
She's a loving and caring mother, and her son is a wonderful young man.
If Alicia says going vegan is what is keeping her skin so good, THAT is where she should focus. She has the skin of a 20 year old. The only way you can tell she's not still 20 is the maturity and depth. I do agree that it's NOT good conversation (vegan). Most will simply never go vegan. But being kind to animals doesn't have to mean not eating animals. The dbags above trapped us (a test? take another soul out of this world to save yourself, or let yourself die to save them ... If this is a test, how cruel of a test ... It seems like, we are programmed, and put in an environment where it's impossible to ACTUALLY LIKE the superiors above (assuming they exist) while we are living on planet Earth - real life is not much different from The Hunger Games, the ones running the game oc are the superiors (they call this a game?). We need animals for B12, because, in humans, the bacteria that makes B12 is produced too far down in gut to absorb much if any. Sea creatures are high in B12, like shrimp and clams, for instance. These can be harvested quite humanely. So could some land animals if done right such as walking them into chamber with increased CO2, which would put them to sleep before dying. Then, afterwards they can be send to the butcher. This takes the "slaughter house" out of the equation. We now have a CO2 house instead.
And when you see, all over the place in nature, other animals eating lots of other animals, you see that it's programmed in to some extent. It's sad. I don't think any of us ENJOY the biology that we were born into (the biological need for humans to eat animals - either placed upon us or evolved into - science says evolved into, but we don't REALLY know how much of history could have simply been "placed here" by the 'superiors'). I think it's MEANT to be a dilemma. How do you react? Just like evolution is a dilemma for most people. I'm just like, whatever, there's both sides to that story - evolution clearly is a thing, but it makes you then not believe in life after death - what a pickle - this is all MEANT to be a thing you have to deal with - an internal emotional struggle - crazy, but that's the way they do it (I guess). various tests or something ... I bet some neural networks that use human behavior from around the world, and over time, as input data could actually crack the code so to speak. What exactly is programmed in (on average - everyone is unique)? but then there's the question of "programmed into our genetics based on evolution or based on the dbags above"? oh, what a pickle. the many pickles of life. This spiral could continue forever.
You have to solve the issue on your own outside of the others. Discussing at parties won't help. Bring the solutions to the banks - give them economic incentive. Skin is not a bad focus (NOBODY has skin like that at her age - nobody). Few likes the banks, but they are the ones that make things move. You want to affect the world, you convince the banks, and let THEM convince the people with a mountain of ads.
It's not the only way the dbags above trapped us ... (teenagers aren't too fond of the dbags above either - suffer the embarrassment of mastication, or not eat at all).
One last thing - CAFFEINE consumption is likely the biggest problem in the world. especially coffee as I've read that coffee in particular has molecules that prevent cortisol metabolism (blocks certain enzymes). That extra stress makes people ANGRY. Take away the cortisol overload, take away the anger.
Thank you for going naked for the sheep! Maybe you could do another to save the trees?
Just wanted to add a serious note - Alicia *IS* the epitomy of a hero (and one of my personal heroes). Same with Julia Butterfly. The people that ACTUALLY do stuff to make a positive change in the world.

Astaxanthin, Berberine, c'mon - what is it (or is it JUST the vegan diet alone)?

Unfortunately I do try to educate and teach and my kids could care less. They have me as a vegan example and my husband who isn't..they always chose the unhealthy choice.

So are all animals that eat animals not kind or loving??? I can’t buy that
They're animals. They don't have a sense of morality like humans do. We know better, so we sometimes do better.
