How To Set Up Tinyhawk Drones With FrSky Tx and Betaflight

- The EMAX Tinyhawk series of FPV quads are well built and really fun to fly. If you have advanced past the EMAX EZ Pilot and want to get into flying the Tinyhawk S, Tinyhawk II or Tinyhawk Freestyle and you want to do it with a FRSky radio, this video will help you out. I'll show you how to bind your Tinyhawk to the FrSky and do a basic set up on Betaflight. This video is not about PIDs or tuning, but just the basics of how to make your radio talk to your drone and set up your switches properly.
The techniques in this video work for all the Tinyhawk drones that bind with FrSky radios and almost any BNF drone with a FrSky receiver.
I also cover a few "gotchas" like having the right kind of USB cable and setting the mode in your transmitter.

This is exactly what I needed, You helped me out so much. I couldn't get this information anywhere else. GetFPV couldn't help me. BTW, if your FrSky doesn't have D8 you can open the software in click the eu box under settings somewhere. That's it. The other UA-cam videos made it way more confusing.

Thanks for putting this video together. I’m a drone guy who’s used to a preset controller that comes with my drone. I’m now getting ready to test the waters of RC planes/wings, also just bought a TinyHawk II. As I said, I’m NOT used to having to tell my controller ( a Radiomaster TX16S ) what to do. This is all rather intimidating to me. Pardon me but it kinda takes all the shine off the hobby for me. It just seems like a little too much work to get these things in the air, especially since I’m used to my preset controllers.
I’m not ready to throw in the towel yet, but I’ll have to see how much patience I have with all this. Again, thanks for the info.

What you showed as the bind button on the freestyle is the boot button for flashing the board. The bind button is also on the bottom of the board on the freestyle 2.

@@drewbooFPV Yes I did! I saved this vid as a resource too. I'm a 43yr old blue collar guy with next to no computer experience, but I have always loved R/C everything. It's only because of people like you putting out instructional vids that has kept me from giving up and going back to my old radios and only buying RTF models. It's a great feeling to get through a complicated setup, especially ones involving a laptop & downloads, and everything works. I literally do a little happy dance in my seat. Lol. But thanks again!

I forgot what a total PITA this all was... and this is a very simplified setup. My first time around I mixed 8 switches and two slider switches into the last 4 channels and the AETR gimbals into the first 4 channels. Plus Betaflight was a complete blank, I had to configure everything, nothing was factory configured except the UART ports on my Flywoo. Took me like 3-6 months,a nd I'm probably still not optimized and finish tested. It flew, sure.
I bought a Tinyhawk 2 freestyle as my first FPV drone and did not get a transmitter I tried to get a emax one but you can't buy it alone this video helped me find what controller to buy so I thank you!

The X-Lite Pro I bought on Amazon was an EU model. I ordered a FCC version and everything works now.
The bind command in the CLi is: bind_rx spi

hello I am looking to by the Tinyhawk Freestyle and that remote I was wondering if you could bake a list of the products that where used in the video so that I could purchase them
I had an issue binding to my QX7S.
Using BF 4.1, in the CLI, type "bind_rx" ("bind_rx_spi" for BF 4.0) The drones LED's did nothing, but, in the CLI type "set frsky_x_rx_num"
If the CLI answers with the same # as your tx is set to, you're good to go - don't forget to save

What is the difference between the BOOT button you say is the bind button on the top, and the BIND button on the bottom of the quad? Just learning how to do this and stumbled on your video. Thanks for showing so many things.
Wow, that's quite a lot to mess with, but pretty well explained. If I want nothing more than to fly around my 1/2 acre yard, do I want the original, the S or the Freestyle? I also fly like an old lady and would only use stable mode. What I do want is flight time. The stock battery connectors that I see aren't very appealing. How about an XT 30 and a 2S battery instead of 2 each 1S batteries? What about just getting he simple stock transmitter instead of the one you programmed? If I did that, would I have to go through all that you did? I guess I can go through all of the BetaFlight stuff, by why do it if I don't have to? Thanks.

Hey i have the same drone (freestyle) and in broke off the port that the camera plugs into, i was wondering if i can use the the other 4 ports on the drone for a camera?
Wow, I just noticed the pitch on those props. They are truly designed to zip.
I did this step by step but ran into an issue with my tx16s not giving me 3 modes it only gave me 2. I reached out and got some tech support and they suggested only using the mixes side of this which i did and now it works. would you say that's a faster and better method when using bigger controllers like the radiomaster tx16s? Or do you know what i might have did wrong?
thanks for the video. I have the Emax RTF transmitter/box goggles. Like to upgrade to the Frsky x-lite as you have. Did you ever compare the Emax RTF transmitter/goggles with the upgraded Frsky? What was the most noteworthy difference? Also, I see you've upgraded the antenna module. What is that system and what difference did you notice?
The bind button on the freestyle is on the bottom also. The one on top is the boot button. There is a bind button on the bottom and it says bind by it. The one you pushed on top say beside it boot.

how are you binding on the internal rf mode I thought you needed exterior rf module
I can't figure out how to find the failsafe mode so I can change it. It sounds like it's supposed to be in the menu where you choose to put the radio in find mode but I do not have that sitting there like some of the other people do,. Idea what's up with that question question this is an awesome video, I followed your instructions and got everything set up really good except for I'm not sure about this failsafe, how to make sure it set to no pulse but I can't find it.

my emax tinyhawk ii is bound to the RC. I see this in betaflight. However, my emax rc that came with my original thii now has sticks in some weird mode.
Originally, it was mode 2. Now, Pitch is roll, roll is throttle, and throttle is pitch. The only 'normal' stick is yaw.
Any ideas?
This replacement THii is a BNF. The original THii was RTF. That shouldn't matter, but may.
I have the same quad/BNF. Try this first: plug-in the quad --> open Beta Flight --> connect --> receiver --> change the Channel Map setting in the receiver page to FrSky (default) --> save. Unfortunately, this didn't do it for me, although I left the setting as above. If that doesn't work, try this: plug-in the quad --> open Beta Flight --> connect --> receiver --> edit each stick source (aileron, elevator, throttle, rudder) by moving the appropriate stick on your controller --> save. This worked for me. You basically have to reassign the sticks.
Hello, could you help me with something please. So, recently I have accidentally burned 2 different FC boards on my Tiny Hawk Freestyle 2! I solder all my motors, and then check all joints and they are very clean. I plug in my two 1s batteries to the pig tail, and the drone chimes up as normal and all is well. I then go to EMAX and get the proper THF2 CLI command for my new flight controller, and go into Beta Flight uploading it to the drone, again all is successful. I bind to the original EMAX E-6 radio, and it is bound. Now, when I give the drone about 1/4 throttle.......it throttles up very high, loses control and flips off the table. I try it a few more times and same conclusion, but now......the smoke is let out of my FC:( DO YOU KNOW IF I need to set the new FC to 2s lipo batteries before trying to fly it? It seems like that is what is going on, because if I was using two 1s(2s total) and the drone is set for 1s, wouldn't that possibly cause this issue? Any advice you have would be very helpful, thanks:):):)
Love your video. Is beta flight required to use the tinyhawk 2? I got mint to bind but that's all it will do, nothing else happens. Same tx as you, followed all steps, solid blue till I throttle up, then flashing red. Thanks guys really wanna try this out
Yes - you will need to go into Betaflight to assign an arm switch at the very least. It won't throttle up unless you arm it.
What antennae is that on your xlite? Can you recommend one for beginner?
How about tiny hawk hooking up to emu flight ???? Some info or experiences! Some UA-cam movies some where to find about this topic?
I'm trying to get mine bound .I first tried the rtf radio of the first tiny hawk.it bound but won't arm via switch that should be the same as the tiny hawk 2..but something is all turned around in my OSU through my goggles...I'm gonna have to hook it up to my computer and see what's wrong.. never done it before , because the first one had beta flite already downloaded in it.this one won't arm

D8 mode needs an external module on the X-lite, X-lite S, and X-lite Pro, unfortunately.
How do you get to d8 mode on frsky x-lite
I'm wanting to get a small quad to fly. I bought the Frsky x9 lite because I was told it's a good beginner radio, but it doesn't have d8 mode. Just d16 and something called Access. It looks like a lot of these small quads are d8. Do you know what small quad I can get that will work with the x9 lite radio? I'm starting to think I bought the wrong radio.
You can add a pretty cheap D8 module to the X-Lite. I just snaps on to the back. Google D8 X-Lite and you should see some options.
@@readysetdrone After seeing that my X lite S radio didn't work out-the-box, I bought the XJT lite module (is that what you're using?), then I downloaded and flashed firmware to my X lite S using the open tx companion, but still can't get the radio to bind with my tinyhawk 2 or tinyhawk S. Wondering if i maybe got the wrong firmware or if there is a compatibilty issue?
@@derbyworkshops356 Hopefully you got this fixed now but in case anybody else is reading this.. In the setup menu when you made the Tiny Hawk profile, there is an option to us internal or external RX.. Make sure you use external and then select D8 in that menu.
Got one issue tho with what u used to bind (screwdriver)allways use a toothpick or something wooden or plastic that way if it slips after you power up youll short out something on the board,had it happen one time.

Maybe you need to check the channel map in beta flight. It could be TEAR instead of AETR... That's my initial thought.

Total rookie here but I was able to get the same Taranis X-Lite controller working with my Tinyhawk S but I can't figure out how to get my Fatshark Attitude V5 goggles working with the quad...is there are setting in betaflight that I am not seeing? I have powered on the goggles and searched every channel repeatedly and nothing. Do I need something additional for the goggles or is this a setting issue?
VTX was not unlocked on the drone....
I have a problem with my tinyhawk2, I binded it with the radio, and on betaflight I can see the switches and input actions as gas, yaw pitch and roll working, I also added the arm control, and other 2 as I see in videos, but then, if I power it up with the radio binded it doesn't fly, althought the leds blink wile giving inputs from the radio (that shows that the binding is correct) the props don't spin, it is not working.... can you help??
Okay - a couple of trouble shooting ideas. Sorry if some of these are too obvious. 😄
1. Make sure the battery is charged. Maybe try a different battery.
2. When you arm, make sure the throttle stick is all the way down. It won’t arm if the throttle is engaged.
3. Make sure you are not still connected to Betaflight. It won’t are while connected to Betaflight.
4 Double check your arm switch is the only thing assigned to that particular switch.

Are the tinyhawks compatible with my spectrum DX6e?
Unfortunately not - But the Blade Inductrix or Blade Vortex are both FPV drones that would be compatible with your Spectrum.

I have a commando 8 and when I go to enteral RF all i can select is multi for the mode and nothing else how do i get it to d8 mode?
Leave it on MULTI.
Change the type to FrSky.
Change the subtype to D8.
This is ridiculous! I appreciate your video. I have 700 bucks worth of brand new gear sitting here and I don't think my tinyhawk s will ever get off the ground. Is it possible to bind the new xd9 plus to it?
XD9 and Tinyhawk S should bind without any issues. It can be tricky if you have not done it before, but those two should work together.
Yeah! These will definitely work together. Make sure you have your x9d in D8 mode when binding to a tinyhawk*

Unfortunately, there are different variations on the bind command depending on which version of Betaflight and firmware you have. So, I'd do some more searching and see if you can find some other variations on the command to try. There are only 2 or 3, so it should be a process of elimination. Good luck!

Hmmm..."backup, reset, and restore" are all things beyond my knowledge of Betaflight. Those things probably were not necessary. Check out Joshua Bardwell's channel - he has a ton of great betaflight tutorial videos. Good luck.

when i try binding my tinyhawk 2 to my frsky x-lite it will not bind and when i out in the command it will still not work.
Which version of betaflight is your flight controller? Depending on your version, the CLI command will be different, so be sure to look up the binding command for your specific version.
Also, double check that your radio is in D8 mode before you put your radio into bind mode.
Mine tinyhawk s wont fly i have it binded and set up but when i arm it and set it in any mode the motors spin but when i give trothle ot wont take off it just move on my desk

Two main steps. Map the switch on the controller. And set the range to arm the switch in Betaflight.
Also, be sure that you have the throttle all the way down when you try to arm it. It won’t arm if the throttle is up.

How did you get your fat sharks connected to the tiny hawk vtx?
The vtx transmits on a specific channel, just like television. Anyone who has a 5.8ghz video receiver can watch you fpv if you select the same channel the vtx is transmitting on.
any vape shop will carry 18650 flat top batteries. they also usually have the chargers.

Just recently, with the TInyHawk 3, I swear that I bound it by pressing the VTX button. Twilight Zone moment!

What's the point of heaving Taranis Q X7 as a beginner like everyone recommended me with new ACCESS protocol if you can't bind to any of the nice beginner drones or tinywhoops because it doesn't support D8 protocol.. Like, I'm a beginner, and I don't understand.. Its great, its new, it works good, it has nice range, and yeah, you can't really use it to fly a drone lol

For Europe this will never work as there is no D8....and with EU D16 I spent few days and did not get it to work. Can throw my FrSKY S10S to trash and buy something that works....great video, just in EU seems no way to bind to my micro and nano drone fleet with FrSKY radios
I bought an X-Lite pro and never was able to get it to work with the tinyhawk 2 indoor. What model number X-Lite did you use? Do you have any accessories to make it work?
I just figured out what the problem is.. With the X lite Pro and S model, there is no D8 mode anymore :( The Tinyhawk needs to bind in D8 mode.. I just ordered the XJT Lite Module to get around this.

The bind button should be on the underside of the tinyhawk freestyle, if that's the model you have.

HEY don't listen to this man he is telling you wrong. that's obviously the boot button hes pressing! the bind button is underneath I just helped a guy on the phone who was using this video as a reference.
