@@TheBonsaiGarden I also like pond and can be made into ecological pond. I just wondered how you learn to the Japanese's style ? your garden is very organized, very nice!!
Hi I’m an avid reader and have many books on Japanese gardens and eastern philosophy. The key is to keep it fairly low key and not overstated otherwise it can look tacky.
@@TheBonsaiGarden That's right, thank you for sharing, I used to go to Japan several times a year, simple and low-key is king, otherwise it's tacky, you have fully grasped the key, I'm also very afraid of gardens that are chaotic because of many plants
Thank you. I am new to your channel. Maples are probably one of my favorite plants! However, I cannot grow them in my local country because I live in a tropical climate Zone 9a-11b. Oh well? I can only keep dreaming! I would have to move to an state where their is Winter! That would be an incredible task to do!
Sorry to hear that, they make such beautiful, delicate bonsai. There will be plenty more on this channel for you to admire, appreciate and simply enjoy 🙏
Nice collection of maples. Love the bargain prices as well. They’re really developing nicely. As soon as I finish typing I’m subscribing. I’m looking forward to watching them develop. Thanks, keep growing
I really like the butterfly Japanese maple planting. Call it a forest planting or a grove -- doesn't matter. It's still beautiful and peaceful. I can envision sitting at the top of that hill in the shade of those trees.
In spring many of the garden centres and some of the supermarkets sell them - mass produced. The prices were a little higher this year, more like £4.50 each.
What a very enjoyable video, It was a shame it finished. Loved seeing all your maples, and I agree about that Katsura. It's developing onto a beauty! It was interesting to see how healthy yours look compared to mine. My garden is very windy, and I think it caused a lot of leaf burn. The discussion on forest plantings (I prefer to call them group planting myself) is interesting, but ultimately as you say, it's all about personal taste. I love them, and if others don't, that's fine.
Thanks Tony, this is a little more indicative of where I envision this channel heading as I grow more familiar and comfortable with the editing process. We all have different micro climates in our gardens. Mine is north/west facing so gradually gets sun as the day progresses which the maples like, being understory trees. The surrounding boundary fence keeps out the worst of any winds. I wonder sometimes if the hate for group plantings / forests comes from two directions: (1) the idea of them being called “forests” when in reality they can only realistically depict a part of a forest, a grove or copse. Unless you have an enormous pot, and somewhere to put it, you can never achieve a “forest”. (2) a bit of elitism and snobbery intended to put (particularly newbies) down. Some people operate in or are only interested in the elite end of bonsai, associating with bonsai rock stars and attending world class shows and exhibitions chasing medals and adulation. But not everyone wishes to show their trees and get as much joy and pleasure from a “stick in a pot” and watching that develop under their care and stewardship. If the definition is “tree in a pot” then that is bonsai. The quality debate is something else, but it’s a bit sad to deride something that gives pleasure, just to cheaply put people down to falsely elevate yourself.
It's been really interesting watching your channel grow from the very beginning. I remember watching thinking 'when will he get in front of the camera?', compared to videos like these which are fantastic and a joy to watch. Bonsai channels are a funny thing. They have to be a blend of information, entertainment and personality, and it feels like you're really finding your stride! As for bonsai snobbery, I say leave them to it. I love working on my trees, creating content and the community, and what some negative people might think about my channel really doesn't interest me.
Thanks for your kind comments Tony. Putting together these videos is a creative joy in and of itself. Though I still feel a bit self conscious in front of the camera and constantly stumble over what I want to say. I’m now getting better at just keep rolling and cutting out the bad takes and have a lavalier clip on microphone for better audio. 😁 And for better or worse I’ve been watching a lot of videos on iPhone videography and editing 😆 You, on the other hand, appear a chirpy natural, which is clearly reflected in your following 😆
Those baskets or pond baskets really help with building up the roots - the wider, shallow trays are especially good for developing the lateral, radial spreading roots.
Thank you, that is very kind of you. I don’t have any experience of that particular species of tree but believe they are quite hardy, water thirsty trees with abundant, vigorous growth.
Varied stories. I have an ornatum by the waterfall on the pond and a garnet red maple in the tea garden that have done ok - they are ground planted garden trees though. The one on the steps by the pond is in a large pot, and gets the most sun, and has badly scorched leaves, though I feel confident it will recover next year. There is also a firecracker (briefly shown in video before the aureum) which is doing ok but gets early morning sun and shade from late morning onwards.
Hello sir. Very beautiful maples! Can i ask somthing. My place is in Birmingham UK and i have deshojo young bonsai.and i just put it in backyard/open backyard. Is it okay?it can get wet on the rain and the sun is like just morning until 12 noon. I appreciate if you can give some advice. Thanks
Hi Jason, I've just acquired a fairly mature Japanese Maple, 2 inch trunk, it only has 4 branches at least 1/2 inch each, they all emerge from the same place and all bend in the same direction, 90* to the trunk, it's not showing any sign of inverse taper at the base of these branches, my question is, would it be silly to keep all 4 branches, aesthetically I like it as it is, just needs ramification and styling of the finer branches to produce a nice windswept, any advice would be appreciated, thanks, 18mth beginner, in deep, lol
Hi Howard, it’s difficult to offer advice without seeing the tree. However if you like it as is, then there is no reason not to keep all 4 branches. If the tree has a convincing windswept look then that could work.

You could try a cold room? And lessen the sunlight over time to force the tree into its dormant state

Thank you 🙏
Great chilled video Jason! You’ve got some Beautiful Acers!

Great vid Jason. Wow, 3 pound maples! Here it is not possible to find any maple below 15 or so.

Thank you Stefano. These are all relatively new so will develop and improve over the coming years.

They are always worthwhile and a great way to get started with Japanese maples and bonsai. 👍
Nicely done Video Jason, thx for sharing your collection!I wonder what breed of Kitty Cat that was at end?
Thank you. It’s a British Long haired tabby.

How have your lace leaves fared with the heat wave? My Tamukeyama really suffered and is now starting to drop whats left already.
