For anyone interested, the sci-fi horror movie "Event Horizon" is widely considered by the fandom to be a movie about traveling through the warp. It's not an official WH40K movie, but the influence is heavy.
The thing people forget is the Immaterium isn't just the collective conscious and subconscious realm of thoughts, emotions, actions, and beliefs of humanity, but for all species across all universes, timelines, and dimensions (think of the Infosphere, Patasphere, and Higher Narratives from the SCP cosmology). With so much thought and contradictory thought of abstract ideas, concepts, and anomalies, as well as each of the infinite layers of the Immaterium being infinitely larger, complex, and impossible than the previous - is it any wonder the entities are so powerful and messed up.
I vaguely remember something about a "darkness" within the Warp that even the Four Gods fear. Don't exactly remember if it is associated with the mandrakes or not, but I believe that to be the case. There are "things" that even Chaos fears but apparently they aren't interested in realspace at all, perhaps they are not even conscious.
