Some kitties are natural lap cats. Some won't sit in your lap for all the treats in the world. My little rescued stray, January, was in rough shape when I took him in from the ice and snow on New Years Day 2018. His former humans had abandoned him when they moved away and I'd been feeding him outdoors for 6 weeks. He was so shy, didn't want me near him at all. But after he came inside and spent 2 weeks under a chair, with food, water and a clean box, he decided he liked me just fine.
He climbs into my lap all the time now. So subtly, I sometimes don't even notice he's there until he stretches or I have to get up. He's also a night-cuddler. When I lie down at night he jumps into bed and curls up by my side, purring merrily. I think January is a "natural lap cat" who just needed the proper lap. That's me. lol

Cat affection has to be earned by consistency, kindness and building trust. I've had multiple cats over my 65 year lifespan. Some were cuddly, some were not. But, all of them were and are furry little treasures I am privileged to have gracing my home. Currently have three. All of them seek affection on THEIR terms, not mine. I'm good with that.

I've had cats for 40 yrs, absolutely love them. Some have been real characters, but all are very independent and I love that about them. Cats are highly intelligent and if you treat them with respect, which is hugely important to them, love them and let them be independent you will earn their undying love and trust. I totally agree with everything you said!

Mine likes to sleep in my arms like a baby -- in a chair or in bed. Which is lovely but keep in mind he's 24 lbs! It's such a gift when they do things like this.

I adopted my cat almost 8 years ago. Doesn’t like to be picked up or sit or sleep on me. But she does follow me everywhere i go and sleeps beside for hours as I work from home. Trying to use treats to get her on my lap. So different from my two previous cats which can make me sad 😔 ❤

My cat sits on the back of my sofa just above my head, but will not sit in my lap. My previous cat would sit next to me, but never in my lap. But he used to have frequent bunting sessions. My present cat, who is a rescue cat doesn't bunt. Boy, i miss those head butts.

I adopted a rescue cat last month from the shelter and have been training him to sit on my lap while feeding him a treat and telling him in really calm energy, what a good boy he is while petting him.
    I don't rush the treat.
Now when I sit in the chair, he jumps right up and sits on my lap for longer and longer just for lovin's!
    That's my treat! 💓
He's an American Ringtail Cat (rare) who carries his big raccoon tail curled up on his back!
It's the cutest thing, ever. 💓
The shelter didn't know what they had!
    Always adopt!
Play play play with your cat several times a day and before bed to wear them out.
Just like dogs, a "happy" cat is one with plenty of exercise.
That also helps with their bones and muscles.
    Please get a cat tree!
Don't crowd it, let it come up to you, respect their boundaries and talk to them in a soothing voice.
Mine talks to me all day & is very vocal.
Put an article of your clothing where it sleeps.
This will also, help create the bond you wish to have.
    Best wishes and good luck!
    My buddy.....
    *I WUV HIM SO MUCH*
    💓🐈💓

I'm envious. Four months ago, I adopted a bonded pair, the owner had to give them up. Took a month for me to win over the male. Now he loves me. Meaning he doesn't bite or hiss at me, he likes being groomed. The other one just started coming out of hiding, at night only. She will stand 3 ft away, staring. If I move, she's gone. At least they have each other. Pye purr-meows at Tula and grooms her. I'll let that be my affection until whatever happens next. ❤❤ Best to you and kitty! ❤

I LOVE that you adopted and you adopted a bonded pair.
      🐈🐈
The one will help the other.
A couple months really isn't that long of time.
I know it feels like it.
I've only had "Butter" for about a month.
named him because of his rolls under his chin and he was sitting like a bread loaf when I first saw him 💓
He was a stray & didn't like me to pick him up.
I gave him time & been working on picking him up and now, he's allowing me to all the time & purrs up a storm.
For the one hiding during the day...
I would encourage you to go sit down on the floor in that area.
      Don't make eye contact.
      Just sit down without talking.
Do that for longer periods of time.
Cats are curious by nature & it will eventually come out to check you out.
Calm energy & let it come up to you.
Always pet under and not over their heads especially with skidish cats.
It may take a bit for it to come out of hiding but please be patient & it will happen.
I'd do the same thing at night, too.
Place a little soft blanket, sweatshirt or whatever with your scent on it "after" holding-grooming your other kitty.
Cats are huge on scent and that will help a lot with "both" of your scents on it.
You can hold an opened wet treat (the kind in a tube wrapper) as you're sitting on the floor & it may come out to see what'cha have!
Blessings and Love to you and your felines 🐈 💓🐈

@marleysankor thank you for your great advice. I won the first cat, Pye, over by reading to him. So I see your advice is on target. I got lazy about winning Tula over. Her original name was Houdini, as she was extremely shy and always disappearing. I don't want to continue with that energy, so she's Tula now. Dini-Tula till she recognizes it. Jackson Galaxy says bush dwelling cats need to get up in height to overlook the territory. I got her a cat dwelling that She plays on, eats on it, rests on it. TY for reminding me. I'm impatient, and I will slow down while I redirect my energies. ❤️ 💙 💜

      I applaud you!
You adopted not one but *two* at the same time!
      💓💓
Cats really don't like change and I don't know how old they are but they were used to their humans and their old environment.
I might hide for a bit, too.
      💛
It sounds like you're doing great!
I have faith the other one will also come around.
      Changing the name...
I watched a video recently where a new owner adopted a dog from their local shelter, his name was Venom.
They changed his name to, Honey and WOW what a huge difference in the dogs behavior!
As adopters, we don't always have full back stories or even much info.
Try a cardboard box in the middle of the room where kitty hides.
Gradually, move it to the common areas of your home.
I think that will make it feel safe while, it can be in the same room(s) as you are.
I never met a cat who could resist a cardboard box!
      😁
      Sprinkle some catnip in it!
That's another way I got my Butter to relax around me.
He uses his paw to get it out of the package now!
      Lol
Like with anything, patience and love are the keys to success!
I would love an update in a few more months!
      You already won one over!
      You're halfway there!
      Good job!
      👏👏👏
I ordered the cat tree off Amazon on sale $65 and it's really tall with several different heights to it and places to lay.
I put it in front of my living room window and he lovessssss itttt.
      Esp being high up!
      Best purchase ever!
A cat window pearch is excellent, too!
I put a stand in front of my bedroom window to give him several places he can look out from.
You can also try, to leave dry treats inside an empty tp or paper towel roll to help coax the shy one out...
moving it closer to the door & so forth.
      Love Jackson Galaxy!
      💓

I have a natural Cymric, and she's quite loving ... on HER terms. She was born of a feral mother and had to be caught in a live-trap, so her first interaction with humans was stressful and it took her years to decide that we were 'safe' for more than just feeding. Now she snuggles sometimes, and at other times she just lays on the furniture arm and allows you to 'worship' her with constant petting.

I have a Scottish Fold that ALWAYS has to sit on my lap immediately when I sit down… to pee. I’m not a man, I have to sit 😂. I usually blink my eyes at her and invite her to sit, but sometimes I don’t wanna make it into a five minute session of cat love and cat purr. So I politely reject Fiona by simply turning on the water faucet full blast. She hates water and so she runs away. It’s a simple solution for me to soften the blow of rejection, and she won’t take it personal. If I tell her no in my voice, she gets sad and her ears fold down even more, and she looks at me with the saddest eyes full of pain and rejection. I can’t stand it, she mopes for hours. But if I use the faucet, it’s all good! Just a tip.

Talk to your cats. Tell the goodbye and greet them with affection when you return. Talk to them like you would a dog or a toddler. If you aren't nattering on to your dog or toddler, shame on you. That's what gets you bright, verbal children and bonds your dog to you like the loving, attentive companion you want them to be.

I think they just are or they aren't. I have a lap cat - sits only in "daddy's" lap, not mine. But sleeps on top of me at night, and begs me to pick her up. Follows me around, loves to be petted, loves to be brushed, let me kiss her, rub her tummy. But that is just how she is, I never "did" anything to get her that way.

I adopted a three month old male ginger from the shelter to be a companion to my two year old male cat, also a ginger from the same shelter. When I brought Ripple into the house I had thought to leave in him in the carrier for a few hours so that he and Sugar could become aquainted before any physical contact could occur. Well, Sugar immediately showed signs of friendly interest, and Ripple exhibited desperation to have physical contact with Sugar. Within three minutes I let Ripple out of the carrier and he immediately took up a position of being shoulder to shoulder with Sugar. For the next five months he maintained that contact, walking side by side with Sugar every time Sugar moved and sleeping on top of him. He quickly demonstrated a fearful aversion to being too close to a human's face, squirming to get away and hyperventilating; although he was ok if I needed to move him to another room by picking him up and holding him next to the side of my head. In fact, he would purr. He would accept short petting sessions and play time, but he never sought out human attention and studiously kept his distance from human contact. When he was four years old he accepted longer petting sessions, but only while being in his tunnel or letting me pet him with my foot., It took him until he was six to not jump off the couch or bed every time a human approached, although he was seven before he regularly stayed put as long as he was as far away as possible. He is now almost nine years old, still cuddling with Sugar, and about six months ago he started lying on the arm of the couch so I could pet him. A few weeks ago he jumped up beside me on the couch and yesterday he did it again, this time close enough to lay with his back touching my leg. And he is a real hunter, evidenced by me finding the corpses of his kills in the yard, but he never brought me a "present", (not that I really wanted one, LOL.)., Well, last week, on my 70th birthday he brought me a mouse! I consider that to be the most significant present of my entire life! Maybe one day he will sit on my lap.

This is useful. However, people shouldn't feel that they are doing something wrong if their cat will not sit on their lap. Because not all cats will do so even tho they love you. Not every Maine Coon for example are lap cats. I had one that always stayed close to me and he used to bump my forehead to say hello but he actually preferred laying on the floor right in front of the sofa. I think sitting on my lap was too warm for him because of all the fur🤭

I have adopted an elderly cat ot 14, but though willing, he realises that he is just too large to stay on anyone's lap. He is a crossbred Forest cat and a tabby, which was not intentional, and huge. Very, very friendly so has decided sitting on my bed is the best solution. Stayed there all night last night. If I put my deaf ear to his tummy, I can hear a deep level purring. Not shy to scratch my cheek gently when he is hungry. Forest cats are apparently like this.

My not cuddly kitty was medicated and sleepy post-surgery. So I had her on my lap or near me 100% of the time. I made sure I made sure she didn’t fall, and would catch her if she was dizzy. 😵‍💫 She involuntarily had to be reliant on me, and I was there for her. After that, when I sit for long periods of time, she comes and sits on my lap. Sometimes I put a pillow on my lap for her.
I also could hold her (pick her up) for long. So I’d hold treats and give them to her when I hold her. After a while I’d give her treats after a hold. Now she’s better, but still wormy. 😂

My newest one is shy about it and won’t really dig the areas I’m relaxing in/on most often. I can tell she wants to, but normally just pouts and resigns herself to her cat tree. We’re moving soon, so maybe she’ll come around and try the new furnishings.

I was lucky if she'd walk across my lap after Son (her beloved human) had been at camp for two weeks. Silly girl! She'd let me love her but I always put her down when she wanted. She was such a catty tease! Her brother was an equal opportunity cuddler. He lived everybody.
My dad and my son both had the awesome patience to make even the most skittish neighborhood cats come running for attention. It's all in the eyes. And respect. Cats need respect to be the silly loving creatures they are. They're very funny when they're happy, secure and respected. They're all so unique in personality that you just have to adjust yourself to what works best to bring out the joy in your human-kitty relationship. I love the magical, mystical creatures. I speak their language.

There are some breeds that will not be lap cats. Some white cats or a Turkish Van tend to not be lap cats but they are extremely loyal and lovable in their own way. I have a Turkish Van female and she is extremely lovable only to me. She will chat up a storm when I get home, roll onto her back and expose her tummy, sleep with me, make biscuits on me, and snuggle very close to me. However, she will not allow me to hold her for more than 5 seconds. She is very skittish with unknown noises and when someone new walks into the room. It’s just the way she is. She has been like ever since I brought her home when she was a baby. She did at one time sit on my lap then and allow me to hold her but as she grew older, she grew into her “Diva” self. Her sister is like that too but even more bossy. We have her litter mate as well. It just depends on the breed, how they were raised, and environment the cat is from. We think one of the cat parents could have been a feral kitty. The litter mate sometimes can be extremely aggressive towards people.

I had a Yorkshire Terrier Dog ikr this is really cats ,but they are bred to be lap dogs. With a cat,as I said some will some won’t.
I’ll say something else. Age matters bc I find some kitties are more cuddly some less it depends on the personality, also my cat likes mostly quiet They sleep more older,so don’t rouse them to cuddle! I leave her plus prior to a yr or so she’d terrible form arthritis.
Something needed to be done she was getting smaller too. Took her in diagnosis sadly like mum” vet prescribed a mild pain tablet.i crush in her food ….amazing difference. Her appetite is fully back! She lets me massage her tip ear tip to tail .before she’d never bite ever, but get agressive maybe hiss that’s warning to back off meeee” Even now on the medicine my sweet cat came back. If she sees a tiny fly she’ll be off maybe that day doing the Zoomies !😊

As I was watching this on the edge of my bed, my cat who was grooming himself, sat in the middle of the bed came up to me and put a paw on me so I went to pet his head. Rookie mistakes, he’s now on the other end of the bed 😭😭 he’s next to my pillow and still happily grooming himself so not a total loss I guess 😅

Working on 4 ways to get my cat to become a lap or cuddle cat. Mine is weird he wants pets but doesn't know how..he shys away but he wasn't abused but he's timid and anxious. It took him 2 years to learn to meow and still doesn't do it much.

Question 1: what if you get the friendly cat on your lap they start doing Happy paws and snag you with their claws? How do you teach the cat to keep their claws in? This is my biggest problem with loving cats that have toenails.
Question two: the cat wants to sit on my lap as soon as I sit down in the chair but sometimes I want to eat first.

Mine like to give multiple nose kisses with lots of whiskers WHEN I'M ASLEEP. Sweet, but brings me wide awake. She also likes to give baths on my face, which also wakes me....aargh. She's very loving and cuddly, but knows how to get my attention!
Cat number 2 likes recline at full length and is easily disturbed by the noise of the phone. He will sit with me for a while, then will get down and sleep right at my feet. He likes belly rubs and will flop in front of me as I walk. He also likes to ride in the truck when I do chores. Very self assured fellow.

My cat, who I adopted nearly a year ago, has a set routine for when it is cuddle / petting time. She doesn't like to sit on my lap or be picked up. She likes to sit behind my head on the sofa. But lately, when I am nearly asleep, or in the night, she has been climbing on me and just sitting on me..not laying, sitting upright on my back or on my hip bone. It's almost painful, with her weight on her front paws ("piano legs"). I don't move when she does it..but why does she do that?

She’s testing u out! Haha. Mine started out that way too…when she was sick briefly I put her on my torso to soothe her while stroking her back and since then she’s been getting closer… if it’s not in their nature, I think sometimes they have to be shown that it’s safe, or comfy

My vets said electric blankets are very dangerous for cats!can cause burns even at low settings. Please think smart cat parents there is such a think as cat heating pads “ that work upon the energy of your cats body weight. I got my cats one I think, at Pet Smart. She loves it.
Then they get they get their naturally safety ( believe too there’s a solar pad in it or something too) anything but w electricity. My cat had it rough from day one. From shelter. Speaking of routine mine made it so far to 15 yrs young”
It’s important to keep up at least w the rabies shots ,then there’s a fatal cat disease so we try and go 6-12; to the vet unless she needs anything .
I think talking my cat was no fan of music but she became used to it even falling asleep to it,
She’s most routine I like to feel I saved her she saved me”❤❤
She’s a cuddler on our big bed we fight over the quilts lol🫶🏼♥️♥️♥️♥️
We’re both Buddhists …cats you all know are very historical animals I’ve a Buddah statue in my home.
My cat Pumpkin circles around it often ( I think she’s in prayer mode)”
Some cats will be if you have that trust love bond ** do all sorts of things like what I term kitty yoga the vets call it trusted stretching “
But this occurs when we’re doing……Meditation .Yes only some days she’ll walk all over my body I’ll ask her ?
We try. If it’s a no go . We stop.
Oddly my cat loves to smell my freshly washed hair,
    Normally nature sounds.
Respect the cat give her needs before your own,
    For she is vulnerable.
Hoomans can make their own food.
Cats cannot deal w their own personal hygiene.
I’ve written poems about my lovely cat.
    Fin.
She lets me know the time bc ISNT there in every cat a time clock for feeding ?

My cat sits on my lap, but won’t sleep with me! I’ve had many female cats and most of them sleep with me. If I had two at least one sleep with me! The cat I have now is male, the 1st male, he will come to bed with me, but won’t stay! I’ve tried petting him and just keep my hand or arm next to him, but he leaves after about 10/15 minutes! How can I get him to stay?

How to turn a cat, into a Lap Cat?
First do not try this at all ! At least not before you really know him at all. And this can take a year or sometimes more.
Since I had my first cat, I always followed my cat from a distance... to learn his ways. He teached me... and so I started a game of catch and get. And my first cat understood. If he could hit me first, he had won... and if I touched him first, I won.
That game was spontaneously ... but me and my first cat, both got the rules. But it takes mostly some time. Yes this was an exception. After that me and my Poeshka had different homes together, and we were inseparable.
And yes a got an rental house after some years. Me and Poeshka.
Some months/ year later a female cat came to me... and learned from Poeshka what the house rules were.
And some months later her 3 kittens learned about that too from her.
Yes if you have a new cat... you learn the new cats a lot ... understood by an older cat that helps you.
After than other cats come to you. To learn something from you... but learning from your cats too.

Sometimes the cats size is just too big to fit comfortably on my lap...I am grossly underweight, and he is 27 lbs ( lost two lbs on a diet) a manecoon x cervil and the size of a medium dog...
He's never scratched anyone, not even my vet, lol who came dressed in padded outfit, face guard and gloves...he said he was the most mellow cat he's ever seen...
Had to switch him to raw diet...he's starting to loose weight now...not very happy about it.

My rescue cat, who is going to be 4 November 21st was abused before i took him in the end of July.
Even though Garfield has never sat on my lap, just recently he will stand on my lap and push my hand to pet him, then he jumps down, but had yet to lay on my lap.

Aw, give her a chance. I have had 3 other cats as kittens. This one is a rescue cat, turned in when two. She had to be adopted where there were no pets, no children and no noise. It has taken a long time for her to trust me. She never purred for a year. Never sat near me for two years. Now, she sleeps on the bed, sits near me, but still not on my lap! I am patient! She likes chin rubs, head scratches etc.

I disagree. Not all cats are independent. They follow me everywhere. They will wake up just to follow me or stalk me
