  • (A long video. My entire trip of about 55 miles from the intersection of Highway 296 (Chief Joseph Scenic Byway) in Wyoming to Red Lodge, Montana is in the video. So feel free to fast forward anytime. And pause the video to read all the info on interpretive signs if desired.)
    SPECTACULAR!
That’s the only word to describe the Beartooth Highway (US 212), a highway that straddles the Wyoming-Montana border northeast of Yellowstone National Park. The late CBS News correspondent Charles Kuralt called the Beartooth Highway “the most beautiful roadway in America.”
The highway was opened on June 14, 1936. But snow closes the road from about October to May. I drove the highway on September 14, and the road was closed temporarily on September 22 because of snow at high altitudes. You will still see snow in my video. The highway is maintained by the National Park Service.
The highway contains a series of switchbacks and steep zigzags. The views of the mountains and canyons and forests and alpine lakes are breathtaking.
The Beartooth Pass Summit (51:47 in the video) is at 10,947 feet. I had to include a selfie. And the pica was cute. :-)
Enjoy my video of BEARTOOTH HIGHWAY!

I just finished watching this. That looked like a beautiful ride. Also a little bit crazy on some of those bends, lol. It makes me wonder how the old pioneers traveled back in the days of the "horse and buggie/carriage". How did they ever manage? It had to have gotten bitter cold too in those mountains then having to deal with the wildlife too. It makes you wonder how anybody could have lived through that. It sure is beautiful country though. Thank you for posting this. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Glad you enjoyed my video. In the winter the snow can get to be stacked 25 feet high. That's why the road isn't open all year. The highway took 5 years to build and opened in 1936. Before that it was only Native Americans, the military, miners, trappers, and prospectors who traversed the Beartooth Mountains.

I think the video IS interesting but actually driving the route has a much greater impact. What a drive! Try it!
