    This channel is the main reason that I actually decided to apply to Oxbridge. I had just assumed that I was not 'Oxbridge material,' whatever that means. Thanks to your videos I built up the confidence to put myself out there and apply! Whether I get in or not, your channel has been extremely helpful during the whole process, and stopped me from giving in to my fear of rejection. :)

    Proud Oxford reject here. I applied for a PhD program at Oxford for the 2022-23 start. I worked on my application for 8-12 months. I watched videos from Jesus College, looked at The Student Room UK Oxford and Cambridge threads, and religiously watched a lot of Oxford Graduate Study videos to motivate myself and honestly because I thought in some way that by thinking like I am in Oxford already, I will get into Oxford. I did not get in obviously. But the work ethic I formed during those months and especially the ideas I generated for my research proposal paved the way to my admission to ETH Zurich months later.
    I was for aiming for the moon (Oxford), but I landed among the stars (ETH Zurich). I truly believe in that saying. If it weren’t for Oxford, I would not be able to get into another top university in Europe. Don’t get me wrong, I was really upset and sad when I did not get in to Oxford. My heartbeat was racing when I saw the phrase “I regret to inform you that…” That heartbreaking email motivated me to rework on my ideas and submit my application to ETH Zurich, which was my very last application for that cycle.
    So to everyone who is dreaming of getting into Oxford, please continue to do so and bring that intensity and drive you already have whether you get into Oxford or not. Best of luck to everyone!

    Transparency is invaluable. The reality is that there are so many successful people who have been rejected at something.
    It is important to not shy away from our goals for fear of rejection, as that prohibits our dreams from ever becoming a reality.

    Totally spot on.
    AC Grayling said that the reason he wanted to found the New College of the Humanities/Northeastern was his experience as an Oxford admissions tutor and the fact that the problem with Oxbridge admissions was one of demand, not supply. That there simply isn't enough places for all the students of the right aptitude and personality to study there. You could fill five universities with the number of people good enough for Oxbridge, but there aren't enough places for them. Not getting a place does not mean you are not good enough to be there.
    I was so terrified of rejection that I never applied to Oxford as an undergraduate. It wasn't until during my undergraduate degree that I actually found some confidence and I then applied to Oxford for postgrad. Even then, I didn't tell my friends or family that I had because I didn't want to have to admit that I had 'failed' if I did get rejected. So the first anyone knew about it was the day I told them I had been accepted. As it turns out, although my time at Oxford (at Linacre and now Jesus) has been just about the best period of my life, I would not change my non-Oxford undergraduate education for love nor money (having now tutored at Oxford four years, learned about the degree programme more, and having seen all of the programmes and reading lists in my subject, I actually think I got a better education at Edinburgh in many ways). So, even if I had applied as an undergraduate and been rejected, it would still have worked out just fine. So people should not worry about that, either. You will be fine even if you do apply and don't get in as there are loads of great universities in the UK that in some respects might actually be better for you in ways you can't anticipate beforehand.

      @@User-Lara99 Yes. I applied for a part-time MSt in Creative Writing in 2020. It was super competitive. Although I had the background for it (being a freelance journalist for a few years), I didn't make the cut. I applied for an MPhil in educational leadership in 2021, and was given an offer because I've had 14 years of experience in this particular field. Overall, I'm a better fit for the latter.

    Thanks for all of your videos throughout the application process, they have been amazing! I have also become an Oxford reject today, it was a little crushing (okay very) when I saw the email (the mass generic email just makes it even worse but I get why it’s done like that) as it has been my dream. I know I couldn’t have worked any harder for the MAT or interviews, so there must’ve just been stronger candidates which is a shame 😂 it’s been hard today because everyone at school around me that got interviewed got in and I’m so happy for them but god it makes it sting. But I’ll get over it! I’m excited to do some re planning and explore my options

    Hey Matt, I really love your videos and they have been really helpful. I would like to ask about the second reaction in terms of international students. Outside of medicine, do you think there is this preference towards home students or that a worry about being an international is valid? Thanks for sharing in this video!

    • @JesusCollegeOxford1571
      @JesusCollegeOxford1571  Рік тому

      Hi there, thanks for your question. No, there is no policy of preference towards home students. Perhaps one advantage for home students is that they sit A-levels, which are typically more focused than international qualifications. Given that our degrees are quite focused as well, this may yield a slight advantage.
      But, we are happy to accept qualifications other than A-levels.

    I agree with your conclusions Matt, although I think I’d have a different nuance on your third & correct post event rationalisation (ie it wasn’t my fault/the university’s fault…it was just that it was a very competitive process with more applicants than places). This is right conclusion as you say and in my experience, people react in two ways to this. Two of my kids were rejected by Cambridge and would now say that was the right decision: Cambridge wouldn’t have suited them, they really enjoyed Durham and had a better, more rounded time there and were able to devote more time to non academic activities there and still get a good degree: no regrets at all. Others and you yourself may have been one from what you say, still have a desire to go to Oxbridge - and why not after all as they are amazing places - and they either reapply as undergraduates or maybe apply for a postgrad place as you did. I think both are entirely reasonable and logical positions: it’s the people who can’t make peace with the fact they were rejected (ie it was my fault/it was the university’s fault) that’s super corrosive and damaging

    Will 4 A Level subjects be more competitive than 3 A Level subjects? (Will 3A* look better than 3A*1A?) How will Oxford decide the grades on a conditional offer? Thank you.

    • @JesusCollegeOxford1571
      @JesusCollegeOxford1571  11 днів тому

      No, for Oxford there are no degrees for which you need four A-levels, and having four does not yield a comparative advantage. By all means take four, if you have the passion and commitment to pursue four. But we look at A-levels alongside other application data -- notably admissions tests and interviews -- where four A-levels might actively distract from preparing well. The only degree that can make conditional offers on four subjects is Earth Sciences, and even then they will make offers on three.

    Hello, I hope you will respond to the comment as soon as possible. My friend and I are from outside Britain. We would like to apply to a university, but we do not know all the details. I got an excellent grade from high school, and she graduated from the university some time ago, specializing in pathological analysis and would like to change her major. The high school average is 69 because of the difficult circumstances it went through. Is it possible for us to apply to a university in Britain? What about Oxford or Cambridge or any other internationally recognized university? I would like to study medicine and she would like to convert her major to pharmacy. We hope you will reply as soon as we really need the information and would like to apply for a grant

      I'm not an authority on this, but as far as I know you should be able to apply through the UCAS website, just as a British student would. I think you would need a student visa in order to study in the UK, and certain other parts of filling out the actual UCAS forms may be slightly more annoying to fill out, but essentially it should be the same process. After making an account on the website, it should walk you through the process of making an application.
      I'm not too familiar with the grant system, but if you look it up on the UCAS site there should be more useful information than I can give you here.
