Amazing yabbying in a tiny dam with meat and string

  • This was the best yabbying trip that I have had for years. I caught so many yabbies in such a short time. This is yabbying at its best, absolutely amazing! I kept around 10-12 very large yabbies and threw back a whole heap of smaller yabbies.
All of this action happened in a very small farm dam that is quite likely going to dry up in the coming months on private property.
If this dam does dry up the yabbies will either bury themselves into the mud of simply walk to another deeper dam nearby.
Now these yabbies are big, they are very big, but they are not the BIGGEST yabbies that you can catch. They do come bigger from time to time, particularly out west where dams are bigger and rainfall is less.
These yabbies are scientifically known as Cherax Destructor. Not to be confused with the Western Australian Marron which is Cherax Aldibus and grows a bit bigger. They are very similar species to each other but they are slightly different. Many people just refer to both species as "Yabbies"
Many American followers often refer to these as crawfish, or tell me that they are similar to crawfish. Crawfish are similar to yabbies, but there are quite a few differences. I will save that for another video.
Yabbying with meat and string, or in this case meat and fishing line is possibly the most primitive yet enjoyable form of catching yabbies.

Thanks so much for the shoutout Robbie, that was very unexpected, and very nice of you! I love the meat and string technique it's by far my favorite way to get yabbies, it's just so much fun! Just curious where y'all are from cuz I'm kind of guessing that yabbies for you are like crawfish for us here in the US ... ? I'm sure that they if not they are some kind of like lobster or a shrimp

You have once again shown all of us that you are a fisherman par excellence , a conservationist - only taking enough for a feed , a awesome dad and family man taking care to show us all the pure enjoyment you can have fishing from basic yabbering to trout and cod fishing also the way you try to get everyone to look after our waterways and dams , creeks on public and private property . Wishing you and yours all the best.cheers and beers

“Glory-Arse morning” I laughed way to much when you said that! Hahaha, love the video Robbie!! My grandparents used to do the soap and stocking technique for yabbing I’ve never done it, but they’d throw a bar of soap in a stocking and have the stocking attached to some string and apparently it caught them. Never done it myself but it seems like it could be an interesting vid

When I was a kid I put the meat in a bit of stocking so their claws would get hooked and I could put a few stones in it as well to way it down.

Two points Robbie. 1. Get in the water beside the incoming bait. 2. Place the net BEHIND the bait so the Yabby does not let go and flip away. You lose too many putting the net in front!!!

We use the same technique when catching blue crabs in Delaware and Maryland in the salt water and brackish water. We use fatty chicken necks and a weight to hold them down like you said. You have to pull them in quite a bit slower than you showed here. We also use wire box traps that you lower straight down off a pier. The doors close on it as you lift. It's great fun!

Robbie.....I freakin' love your videos man! Here in the NW USA we call these Abby's.....Crawdad's. I've been catching them my entire life and actually free dive into small river and creeks for them , and hand pick all the big ones. Been doing it for about 45 years now. Getting older now and have started to use traps more often , as I can't move as quick as I used to. But man , your enthuiasim is awesome to see!! Fishing for crawdad's out of the columbia river , the biggest ones I've caught had claws that measure over 4" long , and from tail to the end of the claws they stretched over the width of a newspaper ( about 14" ). Keep having a blast , protect those females and have fun mate!!

Here's a tip you might like, save the mesh bags that onions or citrus fruit come in. Cut them into 6"- 8" squares. Bundle your meat in the center and tie your line around the top. Your bait will last much, much longer. Or get your butcher to locate beef or pork spleens. They're like a liver mated with a sponge and wrapped the baby in a tough membrane. Every time a yabbie pinches or bites, fresh blood is released. A little chunk will last all day and night! Even if you have to buy bulk, you can freeze it and have it all year long.

BTW mate, the biggest yabbie I've every caught had its claws in one corner of a 4L ice cream bucket and curled tail in the diagonal opposite corner....a MONSTER. Did not taste any better than the small ones. - Pro tip: fill the belly of a yellowbelly with yabbie tails and garlic butter. Cook in foil on the barbie.

we call them crawdads here. Which is a weird name I am realizing. Yabby is way more Austrian though. Put some yabbies on the barby i reckon. I loved catching them as a kid, In south US they make them spicy and delicious.

Hi Jack thanks for watching. Yabbies/crawdads they're all similar. I bet your crawdads taste just as nice as our yabbies.

Another great one mate, but I gotta say, I don't know I wasn't there but mate that dam didn't look healthy at all. I grew up on farms as a kid and some dams are good and some are no good! From what I could see that dam didn't look like eating them would be that good for ya. Looked like blue green algae on the down wind side. It had no plant life in it. Not good signs for eating hey. Could make ya crook mate. Just a heads up. But a family of wood ducks were close by and Yabbies of all size and of plenty. No plants and that green and the thickness of the water. Was my concern. Love you videos mate. Keep it up 👌💪🎣

      @robbiefishing  2 роки тому

Thanks so much mate. The dam looks a lot different when it is full. The lower they get the dirtier they become and the more manky they look. BUT.... thays the best time to catch yabbies on them.

You may have been catching the same two yabbies because you kept throwing them back in near your bait :) I'd be releasing them after you have finished or chucking them over the other side of the dam

Hey Colin, I kid you not, not long after I filmed this we had a massive 1 in a 100 year type flood. The entire paddock flooded and there was water everywhere.
Once things settled the water in the dam was dark and clear, and I could not catch a single yabby. They were all gone.
      For 2 years I couldn't find a single yabby.
Last year I thought I would try again and bang... It was full of yabbies.
