Literally my dream job, I'm about to start my bachelors program in cosmetics and fragrance marketing at FIT so hopefully in a few years it will be attainable 🤞🏼

I am moving the New York this summer so that is how I initially became a subscriber, but now this video has provided even more insight than I could have ever imagined! Hello love! Thoroughly enjoyed your video (as always) but as a former recruiter of 3 years, I had to comment on your resume tips. I agree that its a great idea to have a neat resume template/matching cover letter. BUT keeping your resume to 1 page and taking off irrelevant experience are huge no-no's. Maybe if you're just in college and don't have ANY experience, right - you'll have maybe one page. Start with a summary (who you are/what you're looking for) then skills like Microsoft Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, etc. then whatever experience you have. BUT. If you have more than 2 years of experience it is absolutely OK to go onto 2 pages. For techies, it can go to 3 even 4. A resume is your chance to SHINE. Keeping it to 1 page seriously limits your ability to truly paint a picture of what you've done. You want to give yourself credit for everything you've accomplished! As far as taking things off your resume, please don't. 1) if you have gaps of employment in your resume, employers WILL ask in an interview, and it will be a red flag if you were actually working during that time. (You can put the dates in the gap and a short summary like "searching relevant employment"). 2) I thought some of my experience was irrelevant to my current position, but when they asked me about it, one of the things I'd done was actually VERY helpful to the job I'm in now. So...again, don't cut yourself short. FINALLY - I'd add a tip that during an interview, you should ALWAYS be prepared by looking up the company beforehand. If you're interviewing at a car company, look up the meaning behind their logo. If you're interviewing at a magazine, make sure to browse through some of their prior issues and get to know their style. It will leave a great impression on them that you did your homework. Ok, that's it :) Have a great week! Hope this helps!
hi, thanks for your comment! i appreciate how thorough it is, however just want to reiterate that these tips are specific to the *editorial industry* (and entry level, in most cases). i'm sure tips vary significantly based on industry (you obviously wouldn't want color and more stylistic fonts on your resume if you were in tech, law, etc), and the tips i shared are ones i've heard from editorial recruiters and more senior editors. i also do talk about looking up the company beforehand in the video. thank you!
Carrie, this was amazing advice! I’m studying journalism now in college, and I love my major but I have to admit that I hate social media 😕 I know this is a majorly unpopular decision. Do you think someone like me, who has no social media, could still break into the editorial field?
thanks, i'm so glad it was helpful!! and yes absolutely. i think social media and the editorial industry go hand in hand at this point, but it's absolutely not a requirement for people to have personal/public social media accounts. it can be helpful in some cases, but i know a number of people who have a very quiet social media presence or none at all 😊
